  • A documentary about the SS Richard Montgomery. The remains of this second world war Liberty ship lie semi-submerged in the Thames estuary. There are currently over 1500 tons of explosives left on board. This documentary looks into the danger the wreck still presents.

    I have sailed passed it too many times to remember, but I do remember the feeling of relief when I got safely by.
    My boat went to Dunkirk in 1940 and then the rest of the war patrolling the Thames Estuary looking for mines, she was based at Chatham but moored at Queensborough just a short distance from the SS Montgomery.

      It's probably fine to leave it. If it does go off and creates a 1m high wave, I don't see how that would be any different to a 1m wave during, not even a storm... Sea state 4 on the Beaufort scale has waves of 1-2m and you can get that in just a moderate wind. Storm waves are much larger.

    Dear narrator;
    You keep referring to this ship as the USS Richard Montgomery. USS being the designation for a United States Ship, IE military. The S.S. Richard Montgomery is a commercial Steam Ship operated by the U.S. Merchant Marine, NOT a U.S. Government entity. While most people may consider this a trivial point, it is not. In that IF this were in fact a U.S. government vessel, the U.S. government could be liable for it's cleanup, or restitution for any damages caused should a catastrophe occur. Being that it is not a U.S. government vessel, the U.S. government is not liable. Therefore the only liable party would have been whatever insurance company issued a policy for this vessel. Since no claim was filed (at least not for damages caused by the cargo) in a timely manner, that insurance company even if it still exists, has no financial liability.
    Thereby, making all liability the responsibility of whatever British government entity is in charge of such waterways, and dealing with hazards to navigation.
    Hence the reason nothing has, or will be done until after the catastrophe, God forbid such ever occurs.

    • @deen1843
      @deen1843 Před 5 lety +2

      I think there is a bit of a grey area for government liability. As I understand it...during World War II the Merchant Marine fleet was in effect nationalized, that is, the U.S. Government controlled the cargo and the destinations, contracted with private companies to operate the ships, put guns and Navy personnel (Armed Guard) on board. The Government trained the men to operate the ships and assist in manning the guns through the U.S. Maritime Service.

    When talking about the convoy SS Richard Montgomery was part of... of all the ships that they could have picked footage of, they picked only 1 of 2 battleships that weren't in commission by the end of WW2! Seriously? And of Vanguard and Jean Bart, Vanguard was the only unique ship without a twin that was in service, so they couldn't have made it any more obvious!
    If they'd just stuck in footage of a Revenge, a Queen Elizabeth or a Nelson-class instead and it would have been fine.

    I know people say it should be removed because of the shipping lanes and other stuff, but the operation would disrupt the lanes anyway. And the ship is still US property, so can they deal with it instead of us? Speaking of which...when was the last time this ship was checked by navy seals?

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU Před 7 lety +3

      It was a US ship, but it's wrecked in British waters which makes it our responsibility, especially since it was mistakes from the Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander who was responsible for choosing a suitable location in the channel that caused the ship to be grounded.

  • @captainalant
    @captainalant Před 8 lety

    Simple. I can do it for you if you want. First pump sand off the ocean floor and cover the wreck with sand. Then add concrete over that. Now if it ever did go off it would be contained. This also would crate an island where the wreck is so ships would not run into the wreck. Put an automated light house on the island and restrict any one from going onto the island. Now we are not talking a small island. You would need to add so much sand and concrete to block off most the harbor. but that is the price you pay to protect peoples lives. You could in time dig a new opening to the harbor to the North. Hell we made a canal in panama.

    • @streaky81
      @streaky81 Před 8 lety +1

      You put concrete over it you'll make the explosion bigger, not smaller. - and you'd add extra shrapnel. Only real way to deal with it is evacuate Sheerness, Southend, Canvey Island and some other areas, strap explosives to it and blow it and hope for the best. But nobody wants to do that so it'll probably sit there until it completey breaks up and/or blows. Build a huge concrete wall around it, pump a lot of the water out then blow it is probably the best (safest) option because most of the shock wave would go upwards; but it's still super risky, but you'd mitigate the tidal wave for sure.

    • @G1NZOU
      @G1NZOU Před 7 lety +1

      That sounds great in theory, but containing an explosion actually makes it more powerful, ignite some black powder out in the open then try doing the same inside a pan.
      The trouble is pumping sand on top of what is already an unstable wreck might cause it to collapse, producing enough shock to possibly detonate the explosives and cause a chain reaction, since there would be people nearby operating the dredging machinery you now have a much higher chance of injury or fatalities.

    If I was Prime Minister I would bring suit against Germany ( they started the bloody war after all ) and the United States Merchant Marine (they wrecked the bloody thing after all ).
