  • The creators of Brickleberry and Paradise PD just released their brand new show on Netflix; Farzar. And unsurprisingly it's a carbon copy of them, so today I'm discussing Farzar and how 2 creators made the same show 3 times

That’s why I appreciate shows that handle adult themes, not adult humour. Don’t get me wrong, adult humour can work. But the thing with Paradise PD, Hoops and other shows like that is that it requires some actual writing to pull off. One recent adult comedy that handles this pretty well is the Harley Quinn animated series. While there is adult stuff in there, the comedy falls more on the characters and the way they interact with one another, not so much the adult aspects. And the writers balance out the comedy with actual plot and development too. Is the show perfect? Of course not. For me, not all of the jokes landed. But the characters were still able to carry it when the comedy wasn’t necessarily up to the task in places.

The thing that made those serious themes, and thoughts enjoyable is that they were the backdrop for the comedy. It progressed into the serious topics feeling like the focal point of the show, and the comedy being an afterthought. That's just how I felt while watching the series through recently. I noticed it was a build up with each season having more serious themes than the one before, until that flip happened in season 4 and the themes felt like the focus.

They really give off an air of insecurity, like they don't see value in taking themselves seriously. It's why I can respect a show like Final Space. It's an adult animated show, with some goofy humor, but it's very character driven with a focus on fleshing them out and in turn feels more charming than just making dumb jokes. You can get behind Gary's antics because he's likeable. But to top it all off, at the center of the story is a pretty serious plot, and when it matters, it matters. The villain is often the butt of many jokes, but the show solidifies him as a threat to be reckoned with. It's not the best show, it definitely has a lot of flaws, but it has a lot of heart and feels really confident in itself (which in turn means it has very little meta-humor, something that has gotten old in adult comedies).
There are many other adult animated shows that are as good or even better than Final Space too, but I think it's a prime example because it is first and foremost a comedy, while other great adult animations tend to put the focus elsewhere.

It's because of the derivative self-aware nature of it. In a show like the one you described, the producers and animators take pride in the show and want it to be good. For a show-within-a-show, it's a one-off joke that is usually a parody of another show or some trope in the industry, so it feels derivative and self-aware, but it's fine since it's just an occasional joke. But you couldn't make the entire "real" show like that, it would be like a one-trick pony, and the lack of passion shows through in the way that the jokes are written, especially self-deprecating humor that shamelessly invokes the names of better shows.
To use Simpsons as an example, Itchy & Scratchy is a parody of Tom & Jerry and how it is shamelessly violent, but it works in the actual Tom & Jerry show because the animators put a ton of effort into visual gags (the "Chinese Tom" meme is a prime example) and understand slapstick on a deep level that seems to be forgotten in modern comedy. The Simpsons animators wouldn't put that effort into Itchy & Scratchy because it's just a parody that only appears occasionally. Yet that seems to be the subpar standard for these throwaway comedy shows.
I could go on about how parody humor is kind of a trap because writers/producers will find themselves using the inherent nature of the show as an excuse to be lazy but I don't want to essay post any longer.

Adult animation with a strict linear plot and character progression are my favorite.
It's what makes things like Futurama, Bojack Horseman or even King of the Hill stand out.
Not only does the plot move forward but so do the characters.
Seeing the conclusion to Fry and Lela's relationship is such a spectacle. Watching Bojack's depression progress with no true resolution besides contempt is phenomenal.
And the one episode of King of the Hill that has stuck with me since I was a child was the episode where Bill starts dressing up as Lenore.
This episode shows Bill's mental state from his wife leaving him. But more than that it show's how good of a friend Hank is. Fully willing to put on a dress to help Bill feel like he fits in and then turning around to act like Lenore just to help Bill get over her.
Writing is the key to make adult animation actually good in between all of the jokes. It's what helps make you stick around.

If Rick and Morty was just gross-out, gory humor all the time with nothing else to add, I wouldn't like it nearly as much as I do, same with South Park. That show is basically Farzars concept but the silliness is way more charming and funny, the visuals are goofy and a joy to look at, the characters are actually likeable, and the story is never jarring cause the creators put effort in making it silly when it needs to and more serious when the time comes for it.
In comparison, Farzar is not funny, the animation looks as static as ever, a million references to much better shows, and a jarring story that was not put together well in the slightest. It feels like Netflix was just throwing money at the creators in its desperate attempt to not piss off animation fans. they're marketed towards coming of age tweens and teens who feel special when they consume 'adult' themes, there's a reason a lot of people consider family guy childish, even tho you would probably say most things on the show are not at all child friendly, we intuitively recognize children are the main demographic of crude and a lot of the times basic and boring humor because most adults have been exposed to these themes long enough to be desensitized and bored, whereas its a whole new world for kids, especially because all the adults tell them never to curse or make these kinds of jokes.

Watch all of the funny things that happen when they do stuff like deadly surgeries, abortions, sex changes, colonoscopies, gynecology, and funny bad things to cancer kids! It's a laugh riot! The reason these shows are doing so well, or at least well enough that the creators get to keep remaking em, is because they're not adult animated comedies, they're stoner comedies, thru and thru. They're not meant to be good, they're meant to be mindless crap for someone complete baked to giggle at for an hour or so, and than completely forget about after. So it doesn't matter if they get poorly reviewed, cause they're still getting viewed enough times by stoners for it to be worthwhile to netflix to make more. I mean, Daniel Tosh had a whole bit back when he had a show about the stupid stuff stoners want in a show.

King of the hill, futurama, South Park and early simpsons are what I genuinely enjoy. Not just cutaway gags or “random” comedy. Jokes that arise from the plot of the episode, and plot lines that arc over whole seasons. Bit characters than are so memorable that I can say “hi, I’m Troy McClure” “drugs are bad, mmkay” and you hear it in your head, or can picture reverend stroop and hear her accent, or see zapp brannigan doing the Riker lean in his lil skirt and talking like a low rent shatner. The jokes are funny because of who the characters are, and I can say that all 4 of those shows have made me genuinely cry. Well maybe not South Park 😂 but we will count the greatest episode of family guy, where Stewie and Brian are locked in the bank vault-no cutaways no gags-as an example of great animation that *did* make me cry, even though most family guy is not that great. But as annoying as constant interchangeable cutaways are, at least the characters in family guy are strong enough that I care about them.
    TLDR
Shows gotta have plot. Shows gotta have multidimensional characters worth giving a shit about.

I'm convinced the only reason adult animation aims to be so raunchy, animated and crude is in defiance to the mentality that animation is exclusively for children, so they do everything the OPPOSITE of what is expected from children's animation just to go "Look at what we can do NOW!"
The clip of the show used here that has the kid asking "Is this more like Futurama or Rick and Morty?" is a red flag, because it's literally reminding me that I could be watching those shows instead, or South Park, or Bob's Burgers, or even any of Seth McFarlane's shows for that matter.

Brickleberry: Sufferable. There were actually some parts which made me laugh, also in my language it had great voice acting. You may check it out if you're bored and like dark comedy
Paradise PD: Much more obnoxious and ridiculous. They've stopped censoring what they were supposted to (like for example balls) and it was also more controversal and unfunny. There were SOME genuinely funny moments, but after some episodes I couldn't make it anymore
Farzar: Haven't watch it, and I'm not going too. I do believe it's even worse than the last 2
