  • Set in the geisha district of Kyoto, this series follows Sumire, a maiko (apprentice geisha) and Kiyo, a cook at the maiko house where they live, and tells a story of their daily lives through delicious food.

      It's a transliteration. They actually meant "She's meant to make (food) for others, not to be the one eating it." is based heavily on context.

      @@OnyxSyaoran This is not true. The Japanese quote was “あの子は、作られる方じゃなくて、作る方。”. The English translation was exactly right, both in its meaning and nuance. It didn’t mention anything about food or eating.

    Quite simply a beautiful show in many ways. No violence, no language, no tech, no smoking, no sex. This story it's as comforting as the stunning Japanese food seen in the show. It's a reminder how nice the world can be when we all care and lookout for each other. It also makes you want to go to Japan to see all this for real.

    I am really impressed with the cinematography. The shot, the tone, the light, the contrast, the landscape, everything feel warm and beautiful.
    Love it.
    The story is so light yet bring so much positive and emotional vibe.
    I cried when watching this series.

    This show is so beautiful, gentle, and heartwarming. I loved the manga and anime, "Kiyo in Kyoto: From the Maiko House", and this live-action version did both justice. I love horror, gritty dramas, and adult comedies too, but it does make a refreshing change to watch something so peaceful.

    Just finished watching this series. It’s lovely, warm and emotional. The most wholesome story I’ve watched so far. No violence, no coarse language, no bursts of anger, no sexual themes. First time I’ve watched something like this. Loved it❤❤❤

    This is a manga to live film adaptation done right.
    Each episode is thoughtfully planned, shot and produced, intimate yet not intrusive, so peaceful and went beyond typical slice-of-life tropes.

    I'll admit that I cried when everyone appreciated her cooking.
    At least this shows a lighter side of the geisha and maiko life in contrast to Memoirs of A Geisha- although I still retain respect to that story.
    What's also amazing is that everyone that have contributed to this story are also Japanese which makes it more authentic.
    There was also an anime adaption of this story.

      Arthur Golden made up A LOT of things in Memoirs of a Geisha, to the point that Mineko Iwasaki, the geisha that inspired the story, suffered a lot of anger coming from the community, bc they thought that she was the one who said those things.
      Mineko later on wrote her own autobiography, with a few shades to Arthur Golden, you should check it out to get to know the real story

    I hope we get more Japanese dramas and movies from Netflix. As a jdrama Stan, I’ve just been waiting for JP content to go worldwide and popular like kdramas & cdramas. Plus, I love Nana Mori, she’s so cute and a great actress & singer.

      Even documentary can still be made into a drama. It's called docu drama like Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story. Thus, this show counts as drama

    This gives the same vibes as Our Little Sister combined with Little Forest. Slice of life story that perfectly balanced showing the characters and featuring the cooking/food.
    Heartwarming, wholesome, and beautifully created.

    I'm so glad to have found this on Netflix. What a beautiful series! My favorite part was the friendship shared by our two leading ladies. Regardless of the country or town, the friendship that is demonstrated by these terrific actresses is loving, supportive, and everything we want in our best friends. The beautiful setting, the deliciously appetizing food, and the gorgeous costumes are a feast for the eyes.

      @@ubesan496 because the western media mainly the US wants to overhype anything korean related. The western media is bias towards Korea you see. On the other hand, the western media mainly the US always portrays Japan as total weirdo shit and put Japan in a bad image to the world so that the world would be discourage to watch any Japanese shows. Just look what hollywood did to the beloved anime classics and video games such as Fist of the North Star, Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros., Tekken, Dragon Ball, Ghost in the Shell, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, hollywood destroyed them so bad that your soul would leave your body. Hence, people who haven't watched these anime would generalize that anime is terrible in general because of terrible live action adaptations done by hollywood! Thus, the world would think that Japanese shows are terrible in general. Thankfully, First Love and Alice in the Borderland prove that the world's stigma towards Japanese shows are definitely wrong

    I had the privilege of having drinks served by a maiko-san in japan a few weeks ago during dinner. She is 20 something, loves animal crossing and demon slayer, and is excited to finish her training in a few months. She said many don't want to finish because the training is very tough. I thought it was great speaking with her.

    Just Binge watch the whole season. This Series was absolutely adorable.🥰 We thoroughly enjoyed it & I highly recommend it to anyone. All of the actors were great. The Kimonos were so beautiful. I hope for a Season 2 but if there isn't one it ended in a really great place.

    I really loved watching this 😊 it feels very soft and warm, and at the same time intentionally and meaningfully brought to life. I especially like that all of the characters, in their own ways, are really lovely and kind - no antagonists, just people finding their way together :) definitely recommend!

    This series is so warm! I kove how they showcase the food in each episode that is made full of love. As someone whom enjoys cooking for others, i definitely relate to Kiyo. On a side note, the ladies are so pretty and their friendship is priceless!

    I thoroughly enjoyed this series. Cultures fascinate me so. The relationship between Kiyo and Sumire is just a pure and joyful example of love and friendship between two very kind kids and how different career paths couldn't keep them apart.

    I have always been interested in the wonders of Japan( natural sceneries, food, temples and culture). Watching this show has made me more determined to visit Japan someday and perhaps enjoy perfomances by geishas. It is great that they still preserve the tradition of geishas. I feel like Ryoko at times but do try to look on the brighter side :) I am surprised that Tsurukoma decided to leave the yukata, I thought she was doing fine all along.

    Have been a fan of Hirozuki Koreeda for a long time and wasn’t disappointed one bit by this series. Reminds me of his film Our Little Sister. A huge treat.

    I can't waiiiiit! I love the original so much and feel like Netflix has made a real heartwarming series out of it.
    As a big kimono fan, collector and wearer myself it makes me incredibly happy to see this adaption 🥰
