My mother is from ehime, matsuyama. Before she passed away, we would return every summer during my canadian school break to see our family. I haven't gone back in 13 years. Thank you vice for making this video. It means a lot to me and made me very nostalgic.
You should go back at some point, at least if it makes you happy? I'm sure your recent Mother would be happy if you did. :D
Have you ever considered going back? It could be nice to not go alone though.

Speaking fluent Japanese is a huge flex
Right?! Was not expecting that and it's amazing!!
I think Japanese is actually fairly easy to learn to understand and speak comparatively, the hard part is the writing
No.
@Jon can you nihango jozu?
@@jasmineanderson994 Yeah she was.
I'm a structural engineer so seeing the castle perfectly restored had my head in wonderland. Had the opportunity to go to Japan once. An experience I most likely will not forget. Brilliant
I've been watching some Japanese woodwork videos and how they developed these wood joining techniques without using nails or adhesives awes me...
@@ibrahimkayikci2146 I know the feeling. I've been awed by this for time. Imagine they have structures that have withstood some of the most devastating earthquakes on record using these same principals. The concepts are relatively straight forward, the precision is next level.
Nevermind that they refurbished it for like 10 million dollars. That would be a hundered+ million dollars in the states it seems like. Like how much did they just spend on Notre Dame? almost a billion dollars?
This video was very educative about Japan's city and culture. The fact that the host is fluent in Japanese made this video 10 times more enjoyable. Well done!
Seriously epic. I know it's a tourism ad, but this is definitely far more convincing and enjoyable to watch than the fast paced, 10 second/1 minute ad spots featuring ALL the things you can see and do in a city we all know anyway. I have wanted to visit Japan for ages now and when I do eventually go, I will try to include Ehime for sure!
Vice could make a whole series on this and I would watch it eagerly!
Yes!
This is a paid ad. I wouldn't encourage it.

Ehime was where I got sent when I selected "countryside" on the study abroad form. It was incredibly lonely at times, but the people I met made all the difference. Decades later, Ehime is still where I consider my hometown in Japan. I've learned that it's the kindness of the people you meet who make a place light up and unforgettable in your heart. That's why although I've been to many other places in Japan as a tourist after I grew up, they don't compare to the way Ehime will always feel in my heart. Matsuyama has such a beautiful castle, the view of the sea from the top is unexpected and breathtaking. I've never been to a city where the castle is still such an integral part of daily life for its residents. The castle is situated at the very heart of the city, not tucked away in a hard to reach corner. Every early morning, students ride their bicycles around the castle moat to get to various high schools and colleges across the city. As a citrus producing area, the mikan in Ehime taste fresher and juicier than anywhere else. May your travels to Matsuyama and the rest of Ehime result in the sweetest memories.
I've felt the loneliness when living 2-3 years in Japan. I feel you.
But despite that, I feel home in Japan, especially in Shikoku - more than my home country and more than the country where I live now.
I would rather say "peace" than "loneliness" to depict my time in Chiba
hi by any chance is it ehime university that u went to for your study?

Been living in Japan for 24 years after living in Cali, born and raised all my life, love it here, so used to peaceful tranquility here, just can’t be beat. I never lock my car door, never have to worry about my things getting stolen, wouldn’t trade it for the world.
You are lucky, my dream too!
@@plug_65 Thank you. The best part of Japan is, I can to Starbucks or pretty much anywhere, leave my bag on my seat, use the restroom and know it's going to be there when I get back. Why would I want to give up all of this for guns, drugs, out of control crime, homelessness, racial division, people not caring etc.
@@xenomorph42 I have this safety in my country , but for me its the peace, tranquility and heavenly beauty of Japan!
@@plug_65 what country if I might ask?
What part do you live in, im ready to leave the U.S lol and whats your job occupation?
I've lived in Matsuyama for the last 8 years. During the pandemic, tourism from both within and outside the country dropped off pretty quickly and has only recently started to pick up again. The SDGs have seen heaps of projects like the fishery/resturant, the renovations of old buildings into hotel rooms, and other traditional crafts around the region get a huge boost. Ozu Castle is amazing in any weather (and Matsuyama castle is too!). So stoaked to see my adopted home town and province get such a great coverage from such an enthsiastic person!
what do you do there for work??
The storytelling, the color grading, and the editing are something else!
This is DOPE! More folks are interested in stuff like this but they might not realize it. You can get takoyaki on a neon lit street at 2 am. Cool for some folks. But you can also have an authentic Japanese lunch at the top ancient Japanese castle. Or a picnic overlooking that castle. All seem pretty cool to me. I figure the Japanese would find a Ranch Hand-style experience in Texas pretty nice as well. Ride some horses, steer some cattle and a nice chuck wagon style dinner under starlight singing songs.
@Black Lesbian Poet huh wtf does this mean
@Black Lesbian Poet black people are everywhere from the Americas, Mexico, to Europe, Russia, and even asian countries. Just LOOK, go outside and adventure the world, instead of being cooped up in your own world of political oppression. Nobody hates you, nobody even CARES who you are attracted to, and I sure do hope you’re not looking to be compensated for your choices. Just look around, I don’t mean in your neighborhood but I mean around the world.
@Black Lesbian Poet if you consider me racist or uneducated on your beliefs, that just goes to show how naive and bias you are. You can’t be a narrow minded, egotistical person who WANTS society to accept you. You don’t NEED society to accept you whatsoever. Just live your life, love who you want, and be who you are, it’s that simple. There’s bullies everywhere, but you can’t act like it’s everybody tho

I’m so happy to you visit my motherland, Ehime. Those kind of videos are absolutely valuable for us. These days all most tourists have been visiting famous places like Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. But if you want to touch different atmosphere from cities, you must visit Ehime. We’re welcome to you come out to Ehime.🍊🍊
When we visited Ozu castle the employees were beyond excited to see us. We answered a long questionnaire, got presents and wäre greeted in town by many people. We felt like famous emissaries 🇩🇪🇯🇵😸 Shikoku is such an underrated place 😻
I'm half Japanese and I've always been fascinated with the old architecture and country provinces in Japan! I really love the nice touch of lofi in the background! This video makes me want to visit Ehime!

@Dr Robert You're right, it's obvious a lot of people remain poor due to ignorance
I'm looking for something to venture into on a short term basis, I have about $6k sitting in my savings
I visited Japan last year, it's a truly a beautiful place
@Dr Robert I advice everyone to start investing and never rely on just salary. No billionaire made it through salary
I'm new to this Bitcoin trading, how do I get started with the help of a professional?
I know about Ehime mainly after watching "Saka no Ue no Kumo" (坂の上の雲). It's just fascination how an area far away from Tokyo can produce some of Japan's greatest literary and military leaders.
Most memorable things about my two visits to Japan were outside the regular international tourist route...
It's like, don't get me wrong, I loved my visits to Tokyo, I loved my visits to Kyoto, Osaka, and the main tourist attractions too... though the second time I visited Japan back in 2018 it sure was almost too packed to enjoy fully. My first trip there was back in 2007, and back then you could still see things better and enjoy more of the touristic places.
Nowadays, specially now that tourism is back, I can tell that the most famous spots will be too overflowing with people to enjoy freely.
But the real magic of Japan happens in places like that.... Ehime, the smaller cities in the east coast of Japan, or even smaller towns on the interior of the largest prefectures. It's there that you start seeing more of an untainted history and culture that came to modernity in a more organic manner.
There's also all these grand pieces of historical value that are not swamped by tourism, and yet there is great care to all these places, they are very well maintained, lots of environments that leaves you in kind of a contemplative state.
And we only got to visit a few of those places because of my ancestors... we were looking for possible towns and places my great great grandparents came from, seeing if there was still some remnant of the family there (most of the Japanese side of my family migrated before WWII, so it's a long way back).
Anyways, great showing from Vice! Wasn't expecting it... xD
I also wish I could speak Japanese as fluently as KTea. xD Never learned the language, the family teaching Japanese to kids stopped around my parents' generation...
This was so beautiful - the culture, the people, and it felt very genuine and less typical touristy vibes. I’m always so envious of folks who can speak Japanese fluently! Thanks for sharing this 🙏
This was such a beautifully put together episode. It was nice to see other parts of Japan and their culture in more rural / ancient areas.
This was awesome and so was the host! Thanks for doing this. Please do more with her and Japan! We plan to go to Japan next fall, so hope to gain more knowledge.
Best content I've seen on the Vice channel so far! This journalist is so interesting, I love her genuine reactions and the respect she shows to the people she interviews.. Amazing!
I didn't even know how beautiful Ehime is.
As a Japanese, it's a shame many foreign tourists just go to like Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, and leave. I love Kyoto but nowadays it's almost over-tourism.
There are a lot more local places worth visiting with less crowds and more authenticity like Ehime.
I personally recommend like, Kagoshima, Aizuwakamatsu, Kanazawa(my hometown!), and so much more!
I love the vibes and the host in this! Would definitely want to see more from her!
Such a well-Produced video loved this and definitely added Ehime to my travel list. The stories are so wholesome.
Even though it's an ad, this is probably my best Vice video. Frome the host to the cinematography and unforced storytelling; loved it from beginning to end.
This was so beautiful. I would love to visit Japan one day. Thank you for highlighting Ehime. It was wonderful to see another part of Japan.

Brings tears to me eyes how beautiful Japan and it’s people are 🇯🇵
As someone who lived in Japan for a few years, it is refreshing to see this side of Japan. Most videos are about the food and culture, but there are so many unique activities that can be enjoyed by locals and tourists. Awesome video and your Japanese is on point. Mecha jouzu desune.
This was awesome. I bet she shocked the hell out of the people she talked to. They were just as surprised as us. 😅😂
Made me sit back and think how it would be to travel aboard. Not going to lie. Sometimes I feel safer in my own country because I know where not to go. 😅😅😅 But I'm probably wrong.
This was inspiring. I would love to see more of her travels in the future.
~ Japan is one of the safest countries in the world. Go be great. The world is your oyster.
The thing is that 90% of countries probably just don’t have areas you “can’t go to”… I’m always amazed by Americans fears of going abroad when they live in one of the more unsafe countries on the planet 😅
I lived in Japan and can assure you that it's safer than pretty much everywhere in the U.S., lol. I walked around my neighborhood at 2 or 3 a.m. without a care in the world. In the U.S., I wouldn't do that.
you must be american .... its clear this woman is a half Japanese
KTea is cool. She's from Japan, she's half Japanese.
So proud of Ozu for its revitalization and restoration, especially after the devastating floods in 2018. The Princess Prefecture's best days are still to come!

Japan is so much more. I just love this country from culture to food. Hopefully I visit again this year
I really prefer the sceneries of the countryside in Japan. It always gives me this sense of peace and content.
The cinematography in this was so beautiful
Like K'Tea stated at the beginning of the video, Japan has SO MUCH to offer. Not taking credit away from Tokyo and Kyoto (which are great cities in its own right), but exploring and understanding other cities and towns in this beautiful country will definitely give a new appreciation to the people and the culture. I am lucky I get to live here!! Favorite city: Fukuoka.

Have to add it to my list. Going back to Tokyo again to see friends I haven't seen since 2018. Once I retire, I hope to live in Japan for a little while so I can travel within the country.
Japan is definitely a country I would love to visit again and again because of beautiful nature, rich culture, nice people, delightful food, incredible artistry, and great transportation. To discover another amazing part of it is a joy. Thank you for making this film!
Sis, can I just say the I'm happy to see you in these spaces? Congrats to you! And congrats to the guy for revitalizing an entire city! Very nice.
I used to live in Kagawa, so if anything, this brings back memories.
It was a delightful experience to watch this beautiful video, I had chills. It made me feel how beautiful it's our planet, humanity and different cultures.
This has been heart-warming to watch. I'm planning my first trip to Japan this November and can't wait to feel like I'm in a different world and get fully immersed in the culture. 🎎

Wow definitely didn't know about this place and I went to so many cities last time in JP!
This was great to watch! KTea did a great job!
I lived in Shizuoka Prefecture for about 2-3 years and found myself frequently drawn to Shikoku Island whenever I had a few days to spare. My trips there often involved impromptu road trips, deciding my next destination on a whim. I felt at peace with myself in Shikoku. There was something about the incredible variety of beautiful landscapes, and the fact that few tourists visit - I felt Shikoku was my secret paradise.
Nowadays, I live in London with my spouse and our child, with another little one on the way. I've had the pleasure of taking my wife to Shikoku for a vacation once before, and we just returned from our second trip last week, this time accompanied by our son. We embarked on a road trip around the island, primarily exploring Ehime, with brief stops in Kochi and Kagawa (all 4 prefectures of Shikoku are equally nice). The experience was so nice once again, particularly with our child joining us this time.
Ehime and Shikoku hold a special place in my heart. Although it might be a bit challenging to access, especially without a car, I consider Shikoku the finest part of Japan. These regions offer a refreshing break from the typical flashy tourist spots, presenting an authentic and picturesque landscape. From the serene northern coast along the Seto Inland Sea and its charming islands, to the southern coast facing the Pacific Ocean, and the stunning inland mountains, Shikoku is truly breathtaking.
How I wish I could reside in Shikoku!
Beautiful people, architecture, and landscape. Thanks for sharing ✌️
