- This video is about small-scale wheat production using modified garden machinery and a home-built threshing machine. I grow my own wheat and make bread not because its 10% cheaper but because I think its 100% better - and it gives me great satisfaction. Growing wheat this way is an indulgence as it requires a certain amount of land, if space is tight growing vegetables and salad crops makes more sense. If you want to try yourself, please check first to see if wheat will grow in your area. Enjoy whatever you grow and remember -look after the land and the land will look after you.

Amazing. I just planted soft red winter wheat for the first time since it's my favorite grain. I don't have any machinery to use planting or harvesting it at this time. I have a much smaller crop. I hope I am able to harvest it next spring once it's ready. It's growing quite beautifully and thick right now before the snow falls. I don't have issues with any weeds since it's very late in the year. I'm having a very hard time finding a place to buy the wheat locally, so growing it is my best option.
We grow white Sonora wheat. Doesn't need to be thrashed. Less berrys, more protein, no machinery.

I'm planning on growing a small plot of wheat this spring and appreciate the real time video of the work involved. I grow winter rye as a cover/green manure crop, but that's relatively easy. Sow it, grow it, mow it, till it.....plant.

Very nicely done video, nice content and editing (and part 2 as well). I grow winter wheat, and a vegetable garden. This year I planted Japanese Millet, Grain Sorghum and Egyptian wheat, partly as wildlife food, but I am going to experiment with adding small amounts of flour from these to my bread. Enjoyed your solutions for processing on a small scale.

That depends on whether you have spring or winter wheat. Winter wheat is planted around October-November. Spring wheat at March-April. Harvest time for winter wheat is between late July-August. Spring wheat from August-September. A better indicator of harvest time is the color of the stalks or the moisture content of the seed. I hope you found this informative :)

Makes me wish i had an allotment, but the nearest one is a couple of miles away and i have no transportation. I only have a small garden but i make the most of it. I was thinking of growing a little wheat. I have some seed already. You video makes me want to even more!

I am born and bred in a city, I have never ever been to any village, but I love this way of life. It is so natural, so far far away from the materialistic world that we have created. I know it would be hard for any urbanized human to live there, but this is how life should be, beautifully simple.
@rockandrope Thanks for your comment, I sense we have the same low opinion of the industrial factory stuff on the bread shelves of supermarkets. One day I may get into to using a sourdough starter, as opposed to shop bought dried yeast. Then I think the artisan bakers would call it REAL bread.

@fbackes1 I am in the process of putting something together on the construction of the thresher but it will take a few more months before its finished. In the meantime, you could keep an eye out for an old (push type) lawn mower that has a steel roller at the rear. The roller usually has a 3/4” shaft with a sprocket and chain drive to the cutting blades. This roller will become the threshing drum and all the other components of the thresher are made to suit the dimensions of this drum.

I admire this. I've often wondered about the logistics of small scale wheat production. I recognize it's a good skill to have, but it seems like a rich man's game. It's not really economical when you figure in the cost of equipment and your own time. But then, if you have plenty of fertile land, lots of money for equipment, and the luxury of not having to work for a living, it's very cool.

Your video has inspired me to try it myself. I have tried 50 m2 of wheat and 50 m2 of rye. I was realy impressed by the sight of my own small field in my garden. And I have learned, how much work it is, to produce my own bread and I'm admiering our ancesters who have done it this way for centurys. The harvest was 35 Kilo of whaet and 30 Kilo of rye. You are an inspiration. I tried wheat and oats last year and had marginal success, this year, following your methods more, things are looking more promising.
Could you address fungal problems with wheat? I've bought supposedly resistant varieties and still have a bit of it to contend with.

I use wheat on a regular basis as a green cover crop and I do save seed off the crop for future seeding and a bit of flour. When I plant I don't use rows as shown in this video. I simply broadcast on a tilled garden then rototill the seed in to about a 1-2 inch depth. Rolling it does help with germination. Some seed may go a bit too deep and some a bit too shallow but I have never had a failure using that method. I sow very thick and so no weeding is required as there is no where for the weeds to grow as the wheat is faster growing and shades out the weeds early. The biggest challenge I had was finding a way to mechanically thresh the wheat without buying an expensive thresher. I use a Sun Jo Leaf Shredder. They are very cheap and the chaff and wheat are contained in a plastic bag under machine. It is a simple matter of winnowing the chaff from the wheat using any number of fan, wind or air compressor options. For future use as planting seed I don't bother to winnow as the chaff / wheat mixture is just fine for that purpose. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing wheat in the garden blowing in the wind.

I'm in Central Virginia and was looking into small-scale wheat farming. I think I could find a bit of backyard a bit smaller than Stephen's allotment to sacrifice for the experiment.

Hi! Great video, really inspiring. What do I have to do to avoid problems with mice, rats or birds in the field or where you dry/store the grain?
@seedtray1: Lovely video and as a fellow small-scale cereal grower of some years trying I endorse your methods. My only suggestion: instead of the dryer, on a sunny September day, spread the grain out on tarmac or a flat roof - a few hours in the sun is sufficient. I'd like to see the drawings of the machine but fear I do not have your amazing engineering skills. I've found the Prehistoric (as documented by J Ceasar) method of snapping off the ears then hand/foot threshing quite efficient.

harvesting quite hard. For the wheat, I used a self made threashingmaschie. Not as sophisticated as yours, but it made it's job. I have seen, you gave a building instruction for your type of threashing maschine on the internet. But I would appreciate a more closely look into the system by a video here on youtube. @TheGreatTamara A good yield will give around 50 small loaves.
Before cultivating use about 1lb fertilizer for expected 100 lb wheat. total N P with 5-10% SO4...you will most likely double your yield and higher protein. Your tiller will use more petroleum than is use to make the fertilizer.
@thenodnarb You may have planted a variety of winter wheat instead of spring wheat. Winter wheat requires a period of cold weather to initiate flowering. If you planted spring wheat it would not be heading yet, I suggest you visit the web site- wheat doctor to learn more about wheat growth stages etc. Hope this is of help to you.
