Anyone who says the film is boring or nothing happens - I went from curiosity as to what was the cause of the falling out, to laughing hysterically in the confession scene with Brendan's character to complete and utter heartbreak at the ending sequence and everything in between - it was an emotional roller coaster and I'm not sure how some people aren't seeing it. It forces you to be introspective and empathetic. We've all been through the situation...maybe not as in-your-face as the two main characters but people come and go from your life and it's not always your choice, and you can't always control it. It affected me long after I walked out of the theater.
I think that's exactly the essence of this movie.
I disagree, I’m halfway through it and it’s boring as hell., story Much too slow
@@gmar7836 Not enough explosions, eh?
Nah it was pretty boring and at times annoying and repetitive. The plot had the depth of a kids Hey Arnold Episode LMAO Simply a projection of your own shallow lack of depth. The only introspection I had was watching this DULL movie that made me think I’d rather cut my own fingers off and burn my own house down than watch that ever again.

If anyone is interested, the chair shown at 0:52 and 2:13 is a typical irish chair, also called gibson chair. It's a piece of furniture that was made not by professional chairmakers but by farmers or the local carpenter, wheelwright, etc.
They could have put any chair as most people likely wouldn't care but it's very appropriate.
Also, they are very comfortable in general, low and laid back.
It is called country carpentry or country style. It is based on traditional craft styles rather than fine furniture. It tends to be less ornate and will have functionality in mind. The Shakers in America are famous for that craft type of furniture.
It is many times nicer than most of the trash you see today in shops.
I wasn't interested but only because I didn't know there was anything to be interested in there. Now I am!
Thanks, this is very fascinating!

If you can’t tell it’s pretty much a metaphor of the Irish Civil War, hence the two friends who liked each other yesterday now at each other’s throats
Beautiful movie about despair, loneliness, leaving a mark on the world to be remembered by, and the damage it can do to others. The theme of brutal and nasty humans, versus gentle, kind, nice animal loving people is so well done. The kid that played Dominic was a revelation. Excellent movie.
He was fantastic in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, provided you can stomach the whole thing
Great breakdown of leaving a mark on the world to being remembered, which is something I have ALWAYS thought about since I was about 14 and I'm 38 now... however, the big thing I didn't like about the film was Farrell's character being soooo annoying and aggressive in his pursuit to get his friend back.. when he chopped that FIRST finger off to let you know he means business...he CONTINUALLY kept harassing him 👋🏿 👋🏿

Very relatable problem with male friendships. You can't really break up with your friends! Best you can do is ignore em or be blunt and mean, and surely they'll take the hint and leave you alone right? Well, what if they won't? Love the premise (and the In Bruges reunion!)
This looks like a different kind of a friendship. Between apparently a "dull" young man and the old man of a village. Just like In Bruges, they were not compatible partners on paper.

For a long time i tried to bring the magic back between us, and wasnt able to let go. I find it relatable and painful, but very beautiful.
Yeah, well said. Although I haven't had the full estrangement with a friend, I had experienced a significant cooling off period with a very good friend and struggled to figure out why. It's an awful feeling.
I'm watching it right now. the moment when Colm is driving Padraic home after he got beaten by the local policeman. Padraic's crying is funny at first few seconds but the atmosphere of 1920 life somewhere far away in Ireland in a village makes you understand that back then friendship and attachment to a person was important. it is a heartbreaking scene in this movie
It should be as important in today's world as well!!
Just watched it. I feel like being set in the 19th is a nice contrast with modern society. Nowadays there's so much bullshit to fill our "lonely" times. But not so much for padraic, the dreading feel of isolation must be so horrifying.

Martin mcdonagh is a man who doesn't give a shit about what sells in Hollywood, he's a man with a commitment to true storytelling. I'm always heartbroken when his films aren't widely adopted by the general movie going audience, but I honestly envy his ability to digest and express the human condition in a way that makes every persons heart skip an odd beat in their chest when they see the baser part of their character laid bare in such a beautiful and compassionate way. This is a man who understands the darker side of the human psyche and expresses it in such a way that the misanthropy prevalent in our society is given a strong voice while at the same time being gently guided to a level of understanding and compassion towards those around us and their many failings and foibles, and I fir one can't wait to hear this man's voice again.
Your spot on great stories that every Irish man and woman can relate to and doesn't pander to Hollywood stunts and gimmicks

Fantastic
This was excellent. It’s been a while since a movie covered such a gamut of emotions so extensively, and much of that can be attributed to the expert acting by Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell. The symbolism of the civil war brewing and creating tension alongside the ending of their friendship was brilliant. I appreciated that we walked into their lives having not seen what their friendship looked like when it was thriving, but at the beginning of its end.
For anyone who has had a friendship interrupted or severed, this hits a nerve, but not necessarily in a way that opens old wounds. I saw this two days ago, but it’s safe to say that this film will be on my mind for quite sometime.

You had me at Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson directed by Martin McDonagh
I watched this movie very recently. It is a roller coaster of emotions. I felt so bad for the friend who lost so much, he was really the only kind, normal individual on the island. I was enthralled by 5 minutes. I was not expecting the ending and cried my eyes out. It left me quite bereft and sad. Beautifully haunting. 5 stars from me.
Dwelling solely on character emotions makes films dull and boring, you need either action or comedy to dilute it.
@@michaelwalsh9145 you haven't even watched it though Michael. You've only seen the trailer. So with respect, wtf are you on about? There's a good few comdeic moments and some great writing of characters that makes you smirk too. You'd know, if you had actually watched it.
@@anthonymaddaford8474 I saw it tonight absolutely crap.
Wonderful film. The island's lack of distractions presented the occupants with opportunities to face themselves. We were given the same opportunities as we watched, leading to revelation or despair ...depending on the viewer.
@@michaelwalsh9145 then my friend you do not have the clear understanding of the film it is your opinion that it either needs to be comedic or have some type of action in order for it to be entertaining but not all of us need that which is why they're a different genres of films if you don't like it that's fine but to put others down and tell them that it was a horrible movie because it didn't have action or comedy in it is quite frankly stupid you have a right to your opinion and we have a right to ours and we think the filament unbelievably enthralling
I saw this film at the BFI London Festival with Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson appearing on stage before the screening, and the atmosphere during the film at the theater was amazing. It has tons of laughs and shocking moments that makes the audience wince. It was a roller-coaster of emotions throughout and a great viewing experience.

The most Irish conflict ever
I think the scariest thing about this scene is the jarring contrast between the indifference of Gleeson's character and Farrell's desperation and pleading. It's like his character just cannot compute how this has come to pass, while Gleeson's character has moved on long ago and doesn't give two shits about this so called "friendship". He has abandoned not only the friendship but all feelings for his former companion without any resolve. Having your friend leave you is one thing, but the sheer indifference Brendan shows... that shit's scarier than a horror movie.
I think the despair of Colm's overshadows the one you're putting light one, it's a more ineluctable and poignant despair that grips every goddamn's man soul when he gapes at the abyss, and to that what can he do? nothing
I saw my self in Colm's despair much more than I could feel in the poor and dull Padraic selfish to a point he could not care less about his "friend" until Colm accepted that he had to stay friend and it could not matter how much Colm suffered and ached from that. Such friendship...
@@blacksages I don't think that's right. It's not normal or acceptable to terminate your friendship with someone like Colm does to Padraic, regardless of your age or health situation. To the best of our knowledge, they were the best of friends before the beginning of the film. Then, all of a sudden, Colm just calls it quits on their friendship. In my opinion, Padraic has justifiable agency to delve into the matter, seeing as he's both saddened and frighened by the sudden turn of events. At first, he asks Colm if he's depressed or suffering with an illness, clearly empathizing with him. But that empathy is juxtaposed with the fact that he cannot understand why Colm has suddenly cut all ties to their acquaintanceship in such an abrupt and gratuitous manner. Colm is a real prick in the movie and Padraic deserves none of it.
To me it seems Gleeson still had feelings for him (he helped him 2 times in the movie) But he just didn't want to spend time with him anymore. Kinda like how lot of friendships die.
Yeah colm should be fucking killed
This happened to me. Someone I thought was my best friend, suddenly went like this to me. It was horrible.
It's difficult to pinpoint exactly what it was but this film really touched a chord with me. I cried my eyes out watching it. It was so freeing. I am so intrigued by the plot of this movie. We've all been through something like this. Where you've lost a friend. Sometimes it's just over time and you've grown apart or it's something you've done or the other person has done.
But just deciding one day to no longer be friends with someone for seemingly no justifiable reason is an interesting plot.
The era of ghosting...
The reason is there and The hints are there. Colm the musician is a demonic entity, he is in fact Satan/pan. The fiddle in Celtic folklore in the 19th century was associated with the devil. It started in the 4th Century with the Church condemning dance as the work of Satan. There’s far more info but that should suffice.
Now, let’s look at why Colm fell out with his friend… Because he was boring and nice. Never hurt anyone. Satan thrives on negative energy and this is why he decided to end his friendship because Satan was getting nothing out of him, his soul was clean and it wasn’t until Podraig acted mean and evil that he took interest. The left hand path is the devils direction but since Podraig was a nice person Satan was being beaten hence the removal of the left hand, his playing hand.
Satan is associated with ritual sodomy. It is symbolised by the Babylonian finger/penis and this is what opens the gateway to the demonic world. The worst death of the soul imaginable. The scene of the donkey = ass killed by the one finger in the ass is symbolic of this
@@Insp.CountMortisWinshipKlaw That's really interesting. So this is based on folklore? Or is it a bible story?
@@ct6852 No, awareness. This ritual sodomy is hidden and presented as Babylonian mysteries, Yoga, New Age garbage. The HOLY WOOD = THE DICK, THE HOLY SPIRIT = THE ASS ETC ETC MAN MADE RELIGIONS.
Jesus is the only truth we will ever know. He has nothing to do with religion.
At the end of the film Colm was interested in Pod again because he became vengeful and full of hatred. He was able to feed off him.
Go look at the bedroom scene where Colm after cutting off his Babylonian finger/dick/energy is in bed... The sign of the whore of Babylon the seal of Saturn is XX is cast as a shadow from the window clearly on his forehead and chest,

I finally watched this film. Loved Colin and Brendan's chemistry in "In Bruges" and I've been a fan of Brendan since his Hamish role in "Braveheart." I really appreciate this refreshing story on multiple levels and love how Martin McDonagh keeps the audience engaged--and in suspense. The scenery is another major character in the film and McDonagh used it as brilliantly as David Lean did in his films. At some moments, I was taken back to another Irish film "The Secret of Roan Inish" (1994) when it came to asking the questions "What is community?," "What are our responsibilities to and for each other? "What do we owe ourselves?" I also highly recommend watching the films "Michael Collins" (1996) and "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" (2007) if you're not familiar with the Irish Civil War of 1922-1923. You don't need to be aware of this subject matter to understand "Banshees of Inisherin"; yet knowing the political and emotional landscape of what was happening across Ireland at the same time gives this film an extra layer of poignancy. These are unforgettable characters and the whole cast was excellent.
What a useful and well informed post! Thanks you!
Definitely feels like a play he wrote and put on a shelf that he turned into a movie. Let's just hope it works as a movie too. His styles with the two mediums are different and this feels a lot more like Cripple of Inishman than In Bruge.

The film is set near the end of the Irish Civil War. When Pádraig's sister goes to start a new job on the mainland, she sends a letter back to him saying, "people aren't as bitter as they are back on the island". It's a small detail, but it reveals something interesting.
The Irish Civil War left a lot of bitterness on both sides, especially during the war and in its immediate aftermath. Yet even though the civil war never reached the island of Inisherin, Pádraic's sister thinks that people on the island were more bitter than they were on the mainland.
Loneliness and isolation on the island seemingly left many people bitter and spiteful because they felt they had wasted their lives doing almost nothing.
Colm and Pádraic's sister become aware that they are wasting away their lives, so they seek to remedy their situations rather than remaining stuck in a rut, like Pádraic and so many other inhabitants on the island.
Colm seeks to establish a legacy for himself as a traditional Irish musician, while Pádraic's sister aims to establish herself and seek work on the mainland.
There is a classical piece of Irish literature called "An tOileánach" (meaning "The Islander"/"The Islandman") that many Irish students study in school. It's set in a similar environment to the movie, on an island ("An Blascaod Mór"/"Great Blasket Island") off the coast of the west of Ireland. While the book is in Irish (Gaelic), English translations are available. The atmosphere and some of the themes of that book seem to be very similar to this movie.
I remember working on the mainland near the ferries the day they went out filming this in the Aran islands hoping to see Collin Farrell, Brendan Gleason or Barry Keoghan when they came back out from filming, unfortunately didn’t get to see them but at least I’ll get to finally see this film that I’ve heard so much about, looks promising and I have total faith in Martin McDonagh that this film will be a good one.
Great to see these two in a film together again.
My thoughts, as well!
barry keoghan and Brendan gleeson. Yes great to see it
Brilliantly written and the acting of all characters is beyond impeccable. Such layered performances. The film is a masterpiece! Deserves every kudos its been getting.
This reminds me of another brilliant film of Ireland, Waking Ned Devine. Absolutely magical film. Everything and everyone in it was just magical.
Gleeson and Farrell were great in In Brudges. Definitely not gonna miss this one.
I could tell this was Martin McDonagh's writing just from listening to the first few lines of dialogue. I didn't know his name by heart, except that I *loved* In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. What a phenomenal writer to be that identifiable. I can't wait to watch this film. I'm really hoping it brings Colin Farrell his first Oscar nomination; he has been doing superb work for decades.
I think this was one of the best movies ever made. Def speaks to me in a light hearted yet weird way
One of the best dark comedies of all time.
The first trailer I've seen in years that made me smile and want to see the movie.
I was in awe the entire time when watching this at the movie theatre. First time since Covid. I absolutely loved it. The acting was excellent. The definition of a pure masterpiece.
when colin ferrel exposed the cop in front of the woman behind the counter in the store and he walked out nervously was incredible acting, the movie was awesome. even the animals in the film were great actors! the donkey, the dog, the horse in the window lol
@@sibe6096 it was the next days reflection that i became aware that id just seen a real classic ,up there with the best.
Just saw this movie and it was a masterpiece!
This trailer alone hits hard. A friend of 20+ years stopped speaking to me one day, we had been through everything together & one day he decides he can't be my friend anymore 😢
Mcdonagh is a rare kind of artist, I have to say. Every movie is an event, something you can feel has slowly been coming to fruition for years. And like wine ages and gets better, so do his ideas - no hollywoodism there, just pure inspiration.
Brilliant film! All actors were amazing! Special shout out to Kerry Condon
Definitely a Supporting Actress gong awaits her.
Just back from seeing this. My fave film of the year. Half hilarious. Half grim. All perfect.
Loved Colin and Brendan in In Bruges. Can't wait to see them sharing a screen together again.
This trailer has put a smile on my face after many months.
Pure Ireland oh how much I love this country with all my heart ♥️, proud to be Irish 🥳
This movie should have won an oscar.
Literally clicked because i saw Colin and Brendan in the thumbnail excited because of in bruges only to find out martin wrote and directed it. Pumped
I’m very intrigued after watching that. Seems like it’ll certainly take a very dark turn.
Seems like it, but probably won't.
What a monumental, magical and beautiful piece of art. This is what cinema really stands for.
Was lucky enough to see this last night. It’s pretty spectacular! The trailer does a good job of capturing its immediate charm, but doesn’t outsell or spoil . Fantastic movie, fantastic trailer, go watch it in a cinema if you get a chance, or otherwise just watch it, because it’s pretty great! Best film I’ve seen in a decent while
Where’d you see it? Test screening? Did they happen to mention when it will be released?
@@rschwartz666 lucked out on an invite to an industry preview screening, but I believe it’s out on Oct 21st in the US. Well worth saving the date
🤔...
Did he actually cut his finger off (I'm probably not gonna find time to watch it anytime soon anyway)
One of the most miserable, depressing films I've ever seen.
I swear one line of dialogue and I can already tell he's done it again. Martin McDonough is incredible.
'But you liked me yesterday.'
Ah jazus we've been needing a proper irish film with real irish actors, can't wait to watch this!
'Proper'? This is from Searchlight & TSG, American companies, also Film 4 from the UK, alongside a tiny Irish production company, but it's mainly American money. Personally, I think it looks like Disney Ireland, all very cleaned up with a pretense of reality & Farrell is horribly miscast, all tan & hair dye, he's just another Hollywood douche, doing a little film to make himself feel better about earning big bux for making trash most of the time. I hope you enjoy it, really, but the chances of it actually being great are infinitesimally small, sorry!
@@thebadtemperedbrit i don't really care and i will be enjoying it
@@gsherlock3379 Your original comment is meaningless then & this is why we have bad film after bad film if people 'don't really care'!
@@thebadtemperedbrit thank you for your enlightening comments have a wonderful day
@@gsherlock3379 the guardian gave it 5 stars and thry nevrr give any movies 5 stars..went to watch it today.. it wasn't at all like Hollywood.
Far from it..highly recommend
Finally a movie without beefed up juiced up non actors with zero talent
A trip to the cinema is in order for this bad boy
Can we take a moment to acknowledge how Colin Farrell does that thing with his face when he's acting that makes his eyebrows perfectly straight.
This is real film making, real story telling. Beautifully observed and told by master craftsmen.
You're basing this assessment off of a 2 minute trailer? lol wtf
@@troy3937 I gave them the benefit of the doubt, past track record of the actors and writer / director. In Bruges, Three Billboards, perhaps I'm being overly optimistic ?
a new film by Martin McDonagh with Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell ? Have I died and gone to heaven ?
Thank god for some madcap insanity to keep us all sane. I cannot wait to see these masters in action again. Joy, joy, joy.
I’m surprised at how much I love this movie
A movie about The Irish with actual Irish actors and actresses? I'm down!
If you watch Irish films you tend to get Irish actors. Stop watching American films about Ireland.
Colin Farrell should have been played by a fat black woman.

Farrell and Gleeson probably have the best on-screen chemistry I have ever seen in "In Bruges" and it looks like they're taking it to the next level here.
A 8/10 without any doubt. It feels like a very beautiful fictional world. Every thing is so beautiful.
9.0/ 10 .... Farrell & Gleeson's performance along with soundtrack and cinematography 10 / 10. And yes, I'm admittedly partial to the whole thing.
This movie looks great & stuffed with talent..but also what a treat to see a film trailer that doesn’t give anything away.
I can’t guess the plot at all, which is so welcome in an era where trailers show enough of the setpieces & plot points to predict events.
Yep, definitely seeing this. Love McDonagh's work and I'm glad that he takes his time with his choice of projects. Goes to show that quantity doesn't always equal quality.
Writing and producing a movie is time consuming in the current era because there is no studio system and every small detail has to be managed and arranged.
This is a very interesting story … it’s all sorts of emotions and character developments that no one expected as story progresses
Just a sweet, sad, beautiful little thing. Like watching a play unfold. I loved it, every second.
The McDonagh brothers do not misfire with the films they put out. Every one just oozes wit and originality
I saw Brendan and I thought “it would be great if Colin was in this as well” and there he was! I’m in!
Best movie I’ve seen in a long time. If you’re intrigued by the synopsis you’ll love the movie
This looks infinitely more interesting than anything Marvel and Disney have put out in years!
That would be an ecumenical matter.
Seems like they live rent free in your head lmao
@@chaka1045 had to look up ecumenical. that is the first time i've heard/read that word. do you really use it day to day? is it used by the "woke"
Searchlight is a Disney subsidiary...
@@jrok96 It's an Irish reference. Google the sentence
I'd watch any movie that pairs Colin and Brendan together again!
Especially when penned (and lensed) by Martin McDonagh!
Finally watched In Bruges for the first time a couple of weeks ago and I loved the dynamic between Colin and Brendan. Will definitely be checking this out
This was such a strange movie. It really roped me in. The scenery, the gorgeous animals, the beautiful stone cottage, the bar...... the crazy story.
