A lot of money in 1965, when the average weekly wage before tax was just over £100, and agriculture and fisheries was less than half that figure. The S1a is one of the most attractive Pentax SLRs in my opinion. Nice review of a classic machine.
Thank you for bringing my dads old camera back to life
Hallo LUCY -- a REAL PLEASURE to renovate and CHERISH such a Gift !
I own a beaten up S1a; bloody superb camera, a definite keeper.
The photo of the Toby carvery reminded me of our lunch there Peter - nearly 3 years ago!
Love the S1A.
Thanks for the review Pete. By an inflation calculator £72 in 1965 is equivalent to £ 1086 in August 2022. Quite a gift!
Got mine 3 year ago. Still use it almost daily.
As much as I love my Nikon f the pre-spotmatic Pentaxes are possibly the best looking cameras of all time. I have a Pentax H2 (S2) that I love to use and a couple of spare (for parts) S1a that sit next to it on the shelf.
The S2 (which predated the S1) came with the auto-tak f2.2 and had 1/500 to T all on one dial. The even older original three Pentaxes had two shutter dials (high and low speed).
Peter, your enthusiasm is infectious. And, I do love a fully mechanical camera… no batteries! A lovely thing.
Another wonderful review. As it happens I have just purchased this little camera. Thanks for sharing👍
Hey I just found your channel. Your experimental and adventurous spirit is really cool.
Make sure you look after yourself so I can keep watching you for years to come.
WoW ! Have a scroll around for any other 'Gems' you may want to watch !
I enjoyed this Peter brilliant review
6:05 Very good advice. Slow or not fully closing shutters (atleast i my amateur experiences) can almost always be cured by lubrication of easily accessibly parts, the curtain tension is rarely and issue.
I just saw a friend‘s Pentax S1 two weeks ago, what a coincidence that you now post this great video about it!
The strange lens cap maybe originally was made for an old super-wide lens where the rear elements stick out? Those lenses where you have to flip up the SLR mirror before you can use them?
And the strange mount maybe is something similar like what later Tamron did with their Adaptall system? So they could sell their lenses easily with different mounts!
So nice to see a predecessor of my K1000. The camera is a beauty. I am glad you told about the dog of a lens you got. ☺️ Thanks again! ❤️😁
YES - I also forgot to mention when I bought a Black Paint Spotmatic 1 the 55mm f1.8 Super-Takumar on THAT was 'also a DOG' ! It never got really good until stopped down to f5.6 == not much good for Floodlit Soccer at full aperture for the Local Newspapers PENTAX were 'Rushing Out' gear at that time to meet Huge Demand
Great video, Peter, I'll take my Spotmatic with super takumar 50mm 1.4 out for a spin!
Thank you for that interesting video, Mr. Elgar. It's wonderful to see the insides of the camera without any risk of messing something up :) Could you show some more tips of camera repairs? Possibly - on the minoltas?
i will have to think what I could show on my 'Limited Knowledge' of Camera Repairs --
