I liked it a good deal. A lot of the criticisms are valid, but for some reason, I still felt kind of invested, and would like to see where they take the kids going forward. And while this will depend on the person, the downtime didn't bore me. Maybe because I watch BBC nature docs, but I also like the slow atmospheric, almost Ghibli style moments where the characters are basically vibing amd trying to immerse you in the world. There is too much of it, yeah, but it never got annoying. That is just my opinion though, and you are more than free to disagree.

I personally feel like the end of the movie wouldn't have worked if we didn't spend as much time with the characters. We needed to get to know them in order to care about everything that happens later.

The first hour is a 4/5, the middle is a 3/5 and the last hour is a 5/5. It got slow in the middle but the last 60 minutes made me completely forget about it. Cameron is a master at action and the movie expands the world, puts a wonderful emphasis on family and fatherhood which are themes missing from blockbusters today.

What my friend and I loved about this movie is the smaller scale of the plot and the focus on family. It's not an exaggerated sitcom version of a family but an incredibly realistic and subtle dynamic that shows you how well Jake and Neytiri raised their kids. None of them came across as trope characters and reminded me heavily of my cousins, who would have each other's back no matter the circumstance while still having their own lives. That level of support doesn't show up much in movies without being overbearing and considering they're the focus of the movie, it shows that the writers were aware of what they were doing. If the movie took a grander turn a la Star Wars, then I would've tuned out.

Look guys, if you like Avatar, you’ll like this. If you hated avatar, you won’t like it. Simple as that. For me, even though the story is simple, it doesn’t ruin it for me. I could watch any movie with a much for compelling story and characters and leave the movie and say “That was a great movie,” yet I probably won’t ever watch it again. With Avatar however, it’s fun, engaging, immersive, gorgeous, and has wonderful action sequences. After I left the theatre I couldn’t wait to watch it again and I’m going back with my girlfriend tonight and I’ll most likely view it one more time and buy it on dvd. TLDR: story is meh, everything else is phenomenal and I’m frothing at the mouth for more.

I honestly liked it more than the first, but not by a wide margin. I enjoyed the slower parts that follows the kids learning and interacting with the other tribe. The visuals are good on a technical level and an artistic level. It really shows that James Cameron loves nature and the sea. The action was so much fun to watch as well, and I loved all the scenes showcasing the futuristic tech, especially the massive vessel. Hopefully, the next sequel has a more inspired story. This film's story felt just as generic as the first one.

As big as the first movie was initially, it had little staying power for many. The toys and merchandise didn't sell at all and in the 10+ years since the first film came out you rarely see any merchandise. It's a film that left people's minds pretty quickly. Pretty visuals to entertain for a couple of hours but nothing deeper to leave an impact.

I Really liked it. I was actually invested once the „boring“ water stuff started, because we spend some meaningful screen time with all the characters and I loved how they handled a specific very large character who becomes important especially in the climax.
I could actually see Avatar continuing on with Jake‘s kids as the main characters in later installments. Some of them actually were more well characterized than he himself imho.
I don’t expect any deep story, but I do feel some characters had more depth than in the first one, especially the villain.
I also don’t think Cameron‘s films were ever all that deep or complex, so I don’t think it’s fair to dismiss the Avatar films on those grounds.
Anyway, go watch it in 3D and on as massive a screen you can find.

Anyone who is saying this movie is bad and giving bad reviews is on something. It’s crazy to me that even if you are a top critic - whatever that’s worth - you could recommend people not see this film. It absolutely needs to be seen by anyone and everyone at least once. From there do what you must with you’re opinion, but If you’re a fan of cinema history and where we’re at with modern film you have to see this- even if you’re not and just want the experience of something fresh. It’s just amazing to see what Cameron and his team have done. The problem nowadays is everyone is looking for these complex mind thrilling plots. Cameron has and will always use basic plots (Terminator, Aliens, Avatar, Titanic) but drive the film forward with amazing effects and an immersive environment.
10/10 5/5 for me, the whole shabang (even with the slow parts). Simple story, some very entertaining and realistic dialogue, and amazing effects that speak louder than the personable characters.
People have just lost patience with films that develop slowly and meaningfully articulate the plot (they always have to be stimulated every few minutes)

I thought the story was smaller and more focused. The reason the humans came back isn't for the whales. They came back to colonize the planet...the whale trade is a separate business story.
The family dynamic is pretty clean, the human in the avatar and the Navi in the human concept. Similar to planet of the apes. Spider fits this perfectly.
Kiri (sigourney weavers Character) was born when they couldn't transfer her body into her old avatar...so it has the aspects of reincarnation. She will more than likely go back to earth down the road to re grow our planet. That's my guess.
Over all I thought this movie was better in story than the first, with a smaller more focused plot. With better effects.

If you get bored with visuals from under water then it means you're unable to process the beauty of it in artistic way, otherwise Cameron, a great artist himself wouldn't have done it the way he did. I loved every second under water and was never bored. How simple was Jaws? How simple was 2001 Space Odyssey? What about Top Gun? I'll have to disagree with this video. I found the movie incredible with the story, the world building, the deep connection of Son and Father and family, something which we don't see a lot of lately in movies. The values of family. The complexities of the Colonel and his "son" and all of that too was so interesting! Which will be a sneaky set up in the next one. The fact that it is beautiful and we can just sit there and transported to another world of awe and wonder is a truly cinematic experience.
I was SO GRATEFUL that the sequel was so good by hitting all of the original tropes and beats of the first one that made it so good. He didn't change too much and kept the music the same, the jungle training montage, along with water montage, the "feel" of exploration too, and the stakes at the end versing the humans. It was awesome to see that the battle was over water now and not air. I think they've done incredible on this movie and the story is so engaging and well set up that the next few movies will be insane, especially when the humans come and fully "takeover". I suspect a MASSIVE war in 3rd or 4th one.
Loved every second of this flick, what a delight of cinema, how often can we be so effortlessly transported to a world of wonder like this? It was 3hrs long but at no point was I feeling like "when's this over". Just wanted to enjoy every second.

I loved the movie and for a 3 hours movie I wasn't bored at any point. All this said, the ending was a bit lacking for me.
    - They were all fighting together and all of the sudden the people from the water disappeared when the enemy were fewer even though the leader's daughter was still there.
    - Kiri having those water powers could have done something cooler with it, like when she stopped the submarines, rather than just being constantly captured right at the end.
    - Spider and his "father" needed more character development to justify the ending part. He is supposed to like the girl he grew up with, but saved his "father" whom he doesn't know much about and who's only purpose was to kill among others, that girl.
    - A guy like Miles who just wants revenge and is merciless with sociopathic traits won't change or have empathy, or care about his "son" all of the sudden, unless they would have made clear that although his tendency was towards violence and revenge, because of Miles memories, he was no the same person. If this was shown more clearly it could have given Spider a real reason to actually care about his "father" and it would have made sense for him to care about his "son".
    - When the mother, Neytiri was fleeing from the big ship and they see the fire and for some reason go back to the ship rather than just swim under water to pass the fire complicating things even more.

@oliverharper, couldn't agree with you more, 13 years of waiting for a midi ocre movie. The visuals were amazing and I loved the water sequences and the message about protecting sea life. But the overall movie was a lazy excuse for a sequel. The dialogue was the worst part for me, they used so many of the same lines from the first one. Like I get one or two call backs to the first movie, but they used a couple paragraphs of the same dialogue. Also bringing back the colonel was a bad move I think, and he all of the sudden has a son? Like what? This movie was an exact remake of the first one but less interesting. There was no mystery or excitement. There was some pretty emotional scenes and cool sequences. But other than that I left the theatre feeling underwhelmed. Not to mention it had the same intro and the same ending, shot for shot. That is just lazy, and now they're gonna make 3 more films? The same thing is gonna happen over and over, and this movie made me realize there isn't much to look forward to in the next 3 movies. Unless by some miracle they blow it out of the park and change it up. But that's high unluckily

It's a Disney distributed family friendly fare, it's not gonna be a palm dor winning complex international film in its nuance and complexity. The film, to me, is certainly complex enough emotionally. Also I hate to say it but I kinda hope it doesn’t make money so they’ll only make one more if not just ended it now. Cameron isn’t a spring chicken and I’m worried he isn’t going to have enough time for a new project if he ends up making 3 more of these.

I think the reason the plot is similar is because this is a bit of a soft reboot.
I feel the same as Oliver about the first Avatar, which is why I'm surprised to hear him say he thinks that's better. I feel Way of Water improves on the original in several areas, including a Jake Sully that's less lame, and a villain given more complexity. And this is all story stuff. Even the environmental message is less abstract, with a more tangible connection to what they are trying to protect. My only main criticism is Zoe Saldana felt more sidelined, and that's a shame. And it is way too long.

completely agree Oliver, from visual side its 5 from 5, but story...that something horrible. During premier of Avatar in 2009 I was only on 2D projection and it was really bland story with cool CGI, this time I was on 3D and it was slight better, however could not imagine to saw this in 2D. I would probably look during half of the movie into watches "when will it end" and patiently watching neverending underwater scenes. For exampe The Abyss is also underwater movie, however the story is more engaging, characters are more "colorful" and music is way better. There going to be at least 3 sequels, and next one need to be more engaging from storytelling point, otherwise people lose interest.

I would actually propose that Avatar 2 takes place 14 years after the first film. The first film it’s mentioned that the journey to Pandora takes six years. So after the humans leave Pandora it would take them six years to get to Earth, and then six years to get back. Let’s add a year because maybe there’s some preparation and perhaps there is a debate on how to move forward with Pandora. Then once the humans return the screen fades to black and says one year later.
Not trying to have a serious fight, but just throwing this out there.

I couldn't disagree any more. I personally loved it and I'm going back to see it again with family. I didn't want it to end, I would of happily sat another hour though it. It took its time to engage with the characters Development and world building so you would actually care more about them especially in the final act. I was actually moved to tears towards the end of the film which the original avatar, I wasn't at all bothered about the main characters, this film definitely had me care more for the characters being a father the ending really got to me

And then they added another good character with super powers to aid the side that already cuts through team baddie like a hot knife through butter ?

IMHO Avatar is actually ruined by 3D. You really need IMAX to get more of the 3D version. Normal local theater 3D just sucks .. too dark, too small, too green .. but the movie has tons of shots which are designed for 3D. Either it's the pointless gimmick shot, with something moving out of the screen toward the viewer .. or it's multilayered scene, but ruined by everything being in focus.
For me, "3D effort" is 1 point down. Oh, and it's also 48Hz, right ?

I absolutely loved this film! Way better than the original for me! I hope you will do a review for Guillermo Del Toro's Pinnochio, it also such an incredible film! One of the best of this year! I also disagree with you on the Way of Water, I was engaged from the very beginning till the end, yes it's a simple story but it's a simple story that works and grabs your interest still surprisingly. As for the first film I was obviously as everybody impressed with CGI/Visual Effects but the story lacked for me significantly, I wasn't for some reason as engaged with the first film as I was with the second even tho both stories are practically the same, it's weird I know but that's how I felt. Plus all the water scenes were absolutely breathtaking and mesmerizing! I love Sea/Ocean so watching this film was an easy time! Had no major problems with the film except few minor stuff like one character who motives I didn't fully understand and overall wasn't that much of a fan of that character he just didn't work for me and few other things but besides that the film is an easy 9/10 for me, but to each his own!

You're right that the story is basic, but you're wrong that the story is the same. This is an entirely different story and in my opion better than the previous film. With that the said, people and critics like yourself need to understand that this movie is trying to capture everyone in the world, not just North American / Western audiences. These films are loved by cultures that are entirely different than ours, and that's due to the simple story with universal themes.
