Whose idea was it to invent "Cole Young" or whatever? Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade. Three perfectly good protagonists. One missing, one insultingly sidelined, and one just kinda...there.
The studios
Cole Young isn't a character from the games and he's hardly a character from his own movie.
@evilempireUK could've done that with an existing character like Johnny Cage
@@ConnorMcCartney95 Or Liu Kang.
According to the director, they didn't want a white male lead so didn't include Johnny Cage.
In that case they could have had Liu Kang as the lead....
I am convinced this movie was directed by multiple people, the quality on the performances, action, and composition fluctuate so wildly it can not be the same person. Compare the opening scene with anything past it, they might as well have been entirely different movies.
The opening scene seemed really poorly done in my opinion. It was so bad I turned it off and stopped watching. Is the rest of it better?
@@alexherman1803 the opening with scorpion and sub zero is litterally the best scene in the movie and i agree it's still mediocre.
@@scaccu Oh geeze... Not worth watching then it sounds like. Dang
@@alexherman1803 the end fight is pretty good but lasts maybe like 2 mins
I agree. The pacing is stupidly fast, some of the fights are hilariously bad, and the quality is all over the place. The movie and its character lack any charisma at all and its just not as fun as the original film. The final act feels like it was written on the morning they started shooting and feels so rushed and lazy in how Raiden just teleports everyone into fights. The sole highlight of the movie is Sub Zero who is awesome and comes off as a slasher villain in some scenes. Hopefully they ramp him up even more when he comes back as Noob Saibot. I see everyone saying Kano was great and I agree to an extent, but they end up overdoing it with his dumb quips. Some of his lines feel like they were supposed to be for Johnny Cage. Overall I say it's a watchable 5/10. Completely forgettable and with some really cringe parts, but Sub Zero is great. The 1995 film is still better IMO.
I was underwhelmed. We spent most of the movie stuck in a cave and saw very little Mortal Kombat. There were some high points but the line drops from the game were so awful. Kano was fun but overall the acting and dialogue were bad. "Daddy, use your uppercut!" Really?
Why doesn't anyone talk about the editing cuts that go from one fight to another, making you watch several fights at once in a complete disarray?
This film was edited for someone with ADHD.
I'm still pissing myself laughing at the director's claims that this film would feature the best fight scenes of all time. Neither he nor his action director were aware of HK cinema of the 70's-90's, if they were they'd realise the standard they'd be expected to exceed and the stupidity of that statement given what they filmed.
@@Grandmastergav86 Seriously, the 95 film's Reptile v Liu Kang and Cage v Scorpion were much better than any fight in this.
@@Slimgosa MK 2021 was nearly 2 hours long, it should have been cut down to 90 minutes. Would have helped the pacing.
@@DP12321 Who knows at this point. What's clear is that the theatrical cut just din't work for me and those that share the sentiment.
@@Grandmastergav86 100%. Was he really expecting us to look at this film and think it better than a 70s Chang Cheh film? Or better than anything we can see in any of the Heroic Bloodshed films of the 80s and 90s? Or even better than what guys like Donnie Yen are pumping out recently in films like SPL and Flashpoint? One of his main actors is from The Raid, did he not bother to even watch them films to get inspiration for how to shoot and edit action?
When there's no more room in hell, the bad movies shall roam the earth
Like the MCU
@@NeverSaySandwich1 hollywood should try something new, maybe?
This entire film to me looked as if they were building towards a sequel. Not joking this entire film could have been the prologue to another better film, I've never seen so much exposition in one movie. That's the only way this film works for me is if it really was just building towards the next one.
I love the excuses people make for filmmakers these days. It was just a bad film.
I felt like the fight scenes were terribly shot and choregraphed. It could have been how they were shot with cuts almost coming every other second or so.
The action is the biggest letdown. Why give the film to a first time director with no action experience? Terrible editing. Massive missed opportunity.
Yeah I’ve seen people say “at least the fight scenes were good” and I feel like I saw a different movie.
They were indeed I've been saying that a better Mortal Kombat tournament movie would be the Undisputed franchise
No Action fight director. HK movies does have this so they dotn get interrupted by the movie director .
If you notice ,its no wonder the Martial Arts star tend to do their own low budget stuff because it doesnt get scrapped into 20 camerashot in a 10 second scene.
@@SomeOne-wl6wp 100%. Don't know why Hollywood doesn't take up that practice, have a director and a action director. Works much better.
"Techno Syndrome" is the name of the track, by the Belgium duo "The Immortals". The band isn't Techno Syndrome
Really wish they would have continued mortal Kombat conquest.
Yup
It was terrible. Somehow it managed to look both more expensive and more cheap than the 1995 version.
Kano saved this movie from being very ordinary
And sub-zero
How? Lmao
it still was. this shit was a mess. an ordinary mess.
Kano really stood out. That actor really brought out his personality. Thats what I was missing from the other characters. They seemed wooden.
No he didn’t it still sucked!
that movie was so overrated everyone wants to say it's good because it had fanservice not at all I still like the original Mortal Kombat better than that one
I think the 1995 version is better. Even as a fan that was super excited for this, I was disappointed with a lot of the choices they made (Cole, the dumb dragon marks plotline, no tournament, the bland locations, the bad acting, etc). It's only good at the beginning.
"no tournament" Oh yes, once I realized there wasn't to be a tournament in any way and it was just going to be a series of disjointed fights and killing intents, any type of anticipation died.
Mortal Kombat 2021 (Pros and Cons)
Pros :
Scorpion and Sub Zero casting was spot on.
Easter Eggs were cool, Nightwolf, Shao Khan and Cage references were great fan service.
Some of the comedic moments.
Was great to see more Asian film leads. While nobody can top Christopher Lambert's version of Raiden, having him be of Asian descent was the way to go. Let's not forget the original character was inspired by an Asian character in Big Trouble in Little China after all.
Jax not talking "street" ala Annihilation - "yeah, that's what I'm talkin' bout"
Some of the Fatalities were done well. Highlight was Jax losing his arms, Kung Lao's and Kano's was pretty good too
Some of the special effects actually looked good.
Sub Zero Vs Scorpion fight scene at end, even if a bit too brief.
Opening scene was OTT but very well shot
Cons:
Scorpions Fatality, 1995 movie did it SOOO much better and faithful to the game
Music was fairly lame throughout, a great techno or even dark electro score could have worked wonders.
Mileena - No, just no.
Tries to cram in too many characters.
Reptile - Most of the time he is shown as a human ninja in the games. This would have been better, only limiting his true appearance briefly.
Kano (mostly) working for the heroes was a let down. And I miss Trevor Goddard's original screen version.
No actual "tournament" to speak of.
Goro should have had a bigger, more threatening presence.
The "arcana" storyline was lame.
Character of Cole was not asked or wanted by anyone. He's beyond boring and I was hoping Goro would eat him alive, or pummel him into the ground, and then kill his dumb ass family.
Having characters from later games in the series was a mistake. Nitara, Kabal, Reiko etc al should have been saved for another time. Should have limited characters to the first two games tops. A sequel could be great if we see faithful interpretations of Shao Khan, Cage, Kenshi, Cyrax, Frost etc
Agreed the 1995 movie was so much better. This was total and complete shite.
Goro was in the movie for 30 seconds if that and then gets killed by some guy that doesn't even know his powers smh on top of that goro look worse than ever he looks so much better in the original
that's because the Goro puppet/animatronic was created by Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr.
@@DrQuagmire1 ok?
@@DrQuagmire1 do you want a cookie?
a nobody fighting Goro in a barn. What the fuck lol.
yep. and the dudes power was literally plot armor. i hated this mess of a film.
Kano and the opening Scorpion Sub Zero intro were the only saving grace for this Mortal Kombat.
and Kano
No thanks on the Kano part, @@sharpsin694. Kano's character was just utter trash. He was a misgoynist rapist and worse in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie. Kano's character should of stayed that horrible rapist type. You know just to keep Kano Kano instead of the movie's punchline.
@@adamgray1753 because cole young was the most exciting character in this movie
We were super stoked to see this. Had the beer ready, smoked a blunt. First scene cool but about a half hour into it we gave up after I forgot what we were watching and went back to the 95 film and had a blast. Great cast full of charisma in that one, awesome soundtrack.
can't believe a film from 95 is better made and has better fight scenes.... like actual martial arts.
The animated movie Scorpion's Revenge is great. That one and the 1995 original are the only MK films worth watching.
What is it with stoners constantly needing to emphasize that they were - SURPRISE - in fact smoking a blunt while watching a movie?
Not hating on you, but I have been noticing this trend on quite a few videos and I am more than curious! 😄
@@Bale4Bond Because they think it makes them interesting, the weed induces the paranoia of the possibility that they're not that interesting...Hint, they don't need the weed to tell them that 😉
It felt like a really well done independent fan film.
nothing was well done with this piece of crap.
Hence the "well done independent *fan film*" joke, @@purefoldnz3070.
I can only conclude that you’ve lost your mind by even lukewarmly recommending that anyone watch this movie.
It stunk. 2021 is fast becoming the year of pushing “Meh” movies as something great. I was excited to see it,then twenty minutes in that excitement faded into mediocrity. 5/10.
when a movie like this is really one of the best the year can produce, you have to wonder where cinema went wrong.
@@jerensteinbear Year ain't over yet. We still have Dune and several other films coming out this year. Try to stay optimistic.
Im still excited for Dune, Denis has never made a bad movie.
@@1183newman Yeah I really hope Dune delivers.
Bingo. Kong V Godzilla is another that comes to mind.
You hit the nail on the head with it looking like the Phantom Zone in Smallville at times. B~)
Some of it is supposed to look that way. The parts of outworld where tarkatans are known to inhabit have usually had a desert look.

I am a fan of hiroyuki sanada(mostly cause of his japanese and hong kong movies of the 1980s) i kinda wish there was more of him.
Ninja In The Dragon's Den - now there's a proper martial arts film. It featured the bootman himself, Hwang Jang Lee and the man with the biggest ego in the industry, Conan Lee. Edit Hiroyuki is a brilliant actor and martial arts star. Probably the best combination of both, his physical skill was very impressive at his peak
@@Grandmastergav86 I also liked the quirky "roaring fire" and the 80s pop song heavy period fantasy epic"legend of the eight samurai" shoguns ninja, royal warriors etc.etc.
Sanada brings a touch of class to anything he's in. This movie could have definitely used more of him.
I have a feeling he's not in it much because of age. Dude is 60 years old now. Still looked great though.
I prefer the 1995 MK. The new one didn't do it for me other than 3 characters. The rest such as the soundtrack and characters were forgettable. If you want a proper MK movie, Riki Oh: The Story Of Ricky.
The original was at least fun. I can't think of a single good thing to say about this. As someone who has seen countless great martial arts films, I don't mean mainstream nonsense like The Raid or Ip Man, the action here is meh. The biggest issue for me is that it felt like a Superhero film and I can't stand those tbh.
I feel like it was filmed by “college humor.”
I love the game and absolutely hated this movie. It says a lot when the first 8min are the best part of the movie.
bUt wHeRe iS cHuN-Li? 🤪
Na, seriously good review Mr Harper 👍🏼
The actor that plays scorpion is a very good actor so on the casting they aren’t bad
Good review, sir! I'm not usually too interested in game adaptations these days, but you may have convinced me to check this one out before it leaves theaters. I can definitely see where your complaints are coming from. "Out World" for instance looks much more like "Earth World" in this one, whereas it's a very different (and foreboding) place in the '95 film.
Kano was funny for about 15minutes then it just became an assault of jokes that quickly got old.
Love your vids, very detailed and informative - keep them coming. Mr DNA
Noone mentioning the dead Japanese guy who can suddenly say "Get Over Here!"? I found the opening scene the most interesting.
It's because he took english lessons in hell
they really shit the bed on this movie. glad i was at theater where you could drink mixed drinks
"it looked like he was covered in ferrero rochet wrapper" lol that made me day haha.
Film is meh.... MK Legends : Scorpions Revenge is still King
Hopefully the sequel can cast a known movie star as Johnny Cage if given a higher budget. That would make the film very meta.
@ShadowOfDeth it’s trash compared to something like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood or LA Confidential. Can’t compare McDonalds with Flemings Steakhouse.
@ShadowOfDeth a MK movie doesn’t need to be a masterpiece of cinema you goof. It’s a video game movie. The new one was good
@@Luke101 see this is the problem with ppl, oh it’s a video game movie it doesn’t need to good. Idk about you but I do want a good video game movie..
@@Luke101 so, should we consider the resident evil series good since it's a videogame movie series?
Anybody know the name of the song that starts at 0:13 ?
Johnny Cage could have served the purpose of Cole. Fish out of water. But he would have been WAAAYYYY more entertaining.
Great review! I’m glad you made one for this film. I was so disappointed with most of the fights in this film tbh (especially the cinematography and editing - the choreography was pretty good). Even as a fan of Mortal Kombat lore, I really did not like many of the decisions made in this film. The whole power inheritance thing was so stupid, let alone the wasted potential so many great characters. Also Cole’s character LITERALLY gets plot armour lmaoo. Hopefully we at least get Scott Adkins as Johnny Cage in the next one. As for Reptile, holy moly, they absolutely BOTCHED him. He looks so trash. The CGI itself is pretty good, but Reptile looks nothing like that and it kinda pissed me off tbh
The sweeping low kick was the only thing in this movie that made me feel anything.
0.5/10
Great review Oliver
Oliver, can you make a review of MK - Annihilation? The book 'Lights, Camera, Game Over' reveals a lot of problems in which the filmakers went through. For instance, an overwhelmed first-time director; lots of unexperienced crew members; a tight schedule; a rushed post-production process; a big studio that wasn't in synch with the producers. I can scan it and send you some pages, so you would have a good source to research on
Shout-out to my friend Dave who did the stunts for Sub-Zero!!
One of the nicest guys I've ever met whilst teaching jiu-jitsu, check him out on @justdavejustsverige
Although I haven't seen the new MK yet, I felt that the game (which I love playing) is better translated to an episodic, cliffhanger style - reflecting the way the game progresses. Still, I'm up for giving this a go, thanks for the review, Oliver.
Raiden was embarrassingly bad.
Am I the only one that got Masters of the Universe vibes in the Outworld scenes?
Budget cannot be an excuse for poor production design when the 1995 movie was also a low budget affair and had some great production design.
Exactly. I hate people using that as an excuse
Everything is all about inflated money now. Money is overvalued over anything else.
1995 Still holds the crown for best video game movie. A few objective reasons why:
1) Physical sets of the 1995 film. Even Christopher Lambert said the sets were amazing and beleivable.
2) 1995 film had less characters therfore more character building.
3) 1995 more brutal fight scenes with actual build up. This 2021 film is just like a montage of fights (especially at the end).
4) The biggest downfall of all modern movies...........Trying to set up sequals and universes rather than focusing on making the best individual movie they can. SIck of all this franchise bullshit so they can milk it for all its worth. Just make a good film!
4) Prove me wrong (Lore > Gore)
Agree with all that except the earlier movie did not have more brutal fight scenes. I mean, it's not even up for debate. Kung Lao's fatality for example?
@@stonecold6521 Um did you see the Reptile Lui Kang and Scorpion Johhnny Cage fights in 1995? Those were Brutal. Kung Loas fight wasnt even a fight just a fatality cannot compare
Hey Oliver! This is a nice analysis! I thought the movie was decent, but not great. The addition of Cole was an interesting idea to tie the multi-generational story together, but the execution was, as you said, kind-of bland and flat. Johnny Cage was conspicuously MIA, and personally, I think there was a bit too much focus on the powers at times. I'm hoping they get the chance to make some adjustments when they do the sequel. There's a lot of potential here.
"multi-generational story"
That's literaly Liu Kang and Kung Lao's VERY REASON for even being involved in the MK tournament. Didn't need Alice Hasashi at all.
Decent for a reboot, but they played it safe in rebooting considering the sequel flop.
The original character insert is probably a self insert to ground the MK universe into 'reality' and the powers unlocked show that it's breaking real world know-how.
What is this channel's credits music?
It's from the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Game "Superman - The Man of Steel": czcams.com/video/8FP0rIWvuy4/video.html
@@gorrbaczow thank you very much 👍
I didn't think it was possible for a MK movie to be worse than annihilation, but here we are lol. If I had paid money to watch this movie I would have been livid.
As it played out, I kept saying, "Hey, like in Annihilation!"
South Australia is where I live!
4:02, makes me curious does that mean night wolf is dead??? Hm.. maybe a new nightwolf will come around
Also seeing Kitana's fan, does that mean she's dead in this timeline, or just missing.
The initial scene in feudal Japan had me brace for a glorious MK cinematic masterpiece, only to be let down with a CGI heavy B-grade sci-fi flick
A fair review of the movie. But I was still disappointed. I can see their attempts to mature the movie with the language and violence, but it still comes across as a kid's movie to me. Nothing was really taken seriously. Liu Kang and Kung Lao are pretty much throw away characters, Sub Zero is more of a threat than Shang Tsung who's supposed to be the big villain, and doesn't do anything in this movie. And isn't there supposed to be a tournament in Mortal Kombat? Shang Tsung pretty much attempts to assassinate all the fighters before they are even aware of what Mortal Kombat even is, and avoids the tournament all together. And Raiden pretty much does nothing about it. Raiden is pretty here just for show.
Just got a new IPhone and your channel was what wanted to watch first. Great work sir as always.
"Oliver Harper WINS! FLAWLESS VICTORY!"
This newest MK movie would have benefited from better fight editing... That was the worst part of the movie, for me
It's a fun movie but, it very much feels like a low budget film with sprinkles of excellent shot composition and decent cgi. I mean 90 percent of the movie takes place in Raiden's pretty bland looking temple.
I think it is a good foundation to build on for sequels but there is alot to be improved upon. Number 1 for me personally are the fight scenes. The only fights I remember are the scorpion/sub-zero fights because they actually have decent choreography. I hate to compare it to the 90s film but really all of the fights in that film are memorable in some way either through dialogue or choreography except for maybe the Kitana vs Liu Kang fight.
Please please please could you do a retrospective on the dark crystal age of resistance
That show is so so good
basically this movie was a soft reboot with some fan service just to not piss anybody off until they put all the eggs in the basket for the next movie with Johnny Cage
Can you imagine the audacity of the director to deliberately make the movie sub-par to bad in order to "setup" the next one. Hey I know I served you a burnt gross burger but come again it will be good next time! No one will come back and lets be real, that next burger ain't gonna be any better.
I agree, this movie feels like a prolongue or tv pilot trying to promote a "possible" Mortal Kombat movie, and despite enjoying the film I can't hide my frustration on not having a proper Mortal Kombat movie being the old one the one that fills that void almost 30 years later.
My iconic cry lives on... MORTAL KOMBAT....
There be spoilers?

My goodness, you took your time.
The movie had action, but it didn't have INPACT. Even Mortal Kombat: Annihilation had moments of high camp. Things are just not the same.😞
Really good movie:) Hope there's a sequel!
"He's about to get his soul SUCKED. I love the way they scream before they *gets hit* AY"
I'm disturbed by the fact Mileena is not played by an asian actress.
If they wanted to save Johnny Cage, but add a character that was real life and could relate to the audience, they could've used Kobra or MoCap instead of making up Cole
Oh crap Kitana's fan 7:12
This film lacked the structure of the original 1995 film that keeps you engaged. Oliver's praise of Kano feels overdone. He was simply O-K, and that's it.
I was surprised that the most notable and credible depiction of the rivalry between Sub Zero and Scorpion didn't even get a mention. That made the movie for me.
The rest of the characters were also ok, except for Raiden who was intensely boring, and Shang Tsung, who couldn't possibly out perform Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
I was looking forward to watching Mortal Kombat more then Godzilla v Kong, and I LOVED Godzilla v Kong, but sadly I didn't like Mortal Kombat.. fights were a bit boring, tho LOVED sub zero vs Scorpion and the stroy was just Meh. I watched Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion's revenge and LOVED IT!
Warner Bro's Mortal Kombat 2021 - Bad film but Great Sub Zero vs Scorpion fight
Mortal Kombat Legends Scorpion's revenge - Great film but Bad Sub Zero vs Scorpion fight. (it was too short!)
This movie is supposed to be for the fans who love to play the games not the casual movie goer. But not all who like to play the mortal Kombat games liked this movie.
I know we're not going to get it but surely Ryan Reynolds is the ideal choice for the actor to play Johnny Cage in the sequel.
Ryan Reynolds is a great person for such a role, but he would overshadow the character. I would only see Ryan Reynolds.
No!
Young Keanu Reeves at 3:16
3:16 you say?
Summary: lots of potential that is let down by its story choices, visuals and editing. The fights are especially over edited.

Yeah Kano makes the movie, he's hilarious
He is?
@@mattstorm6568 Yep!
@@Iggsy81 What exactly was hilarious about him, the way everyone kicks his ass and makes a chump out of him? Richard Divizio must be pissed.
This iteration just felt lackluster. The 95 movie had some real personality, whereas this one felt kind of generic. The worst thing was the numerous plot holes throughout. You can gain a dragon mark by killing the previous holder. Okay, but why would it go to someone like Kano, who obviously isn't the type to defend earth in the tournament? Why not go to another who would? Raiden even says he can just make a new list of fighters at the end.
There's a list? Why doesn't he go get them instead of sitting on his ass? Can he not find them? How does he make the list if he can't find them to begin with?
Speaking of Raiden, why are he and the chosen fighters hiding out in a cave where they can be attacked, when he demonstrates that he can transport them to the void where nobody can follow them?
Why does Shang Tsung say that he's breaking the rules of Mortal Kombat, when Raiden tells them that fighting outside of the tournament isn't prohibited? Are they breaking the rules or not?
Why does Shang Tsung point out that Nitara is hot? So that Kabal can make a joke?
Why does Cole get to decide who fights who?
Why did Sub Zero let Cole's family live?
Why does Kano's eye short circuit despite him not having any cybernetics?
How did Raiden and a bunch of monks in a cave fit Jax with bionics, and, more importantly...WHY THE HELL DID JAX'S POWER GROW ARMOR FOR HIS MECHANICAL ARMS?
And then of course, there's Cole's literal plot armor...
I didn't even intend this to be a rant, but it seems to have turned into one.
The movie has its good points, but, yeah, I'll stick to the 95 one. Bad CGI and all.
the movie is okayish like 5/10 :) through out a fan 's glasses like me :) some very nice fighting scenes but I hated the pacing and the permanent switching of locations ... they should have slowed down a little bit. But the fatalities and some fights were amazing!
soundtrack was very dissappointing. orchestral pieces mixed with some electronic did not work in this one. Just imagine if they used modern trance and techno tracks during fight scenes, just like they did in 1995 and 1997 versions.
I think the plot was a tad undercooked, but it was entertaining. I actually didn't mind Cole. Could the movie have been made without him? Definitely. However, I thought that he was a decent addition to the character roster. Scorpion's human backstory at the beginning was great to see, but having no explanation as to how he got to hell and back as a wraith (aka no Quan Chi) left me wanting. The other good guy characters were on the mark with their video game counterparts. Mileena and Goro were criminally wasted. Reiko is forgettable. Nitara, along with the aforementioned Reiko, was only there for the fatality fodder. I wanted to see more Reptile, but it was a shame to see him only in the one scene. I can see why Johnny Cage was left out as Kano was more than enough comedic relief and Cage would have added too much. I'm actually glad Cage was left out this time around as it makes me look forward to his introduction in a sequel. The only bad guy characters that I thought were utilized adequately enough to outstanding were Shang Tsung, Sub-Zero and Kano. Everyone else? Meh. Overall, a good time was had, but it could have been benefitted from more story development and left in the oven for a little longer.
That one fatality though was extremely satisfying for an MK fan like myself.
Scott Adkins for Johnny Cage!!!
I liked the movie, sub zero and kano were my favorites
It had potential, but I ultimately hated it. The costumes were top notch, but not even having the actual tournament in it is unforgivable. Also Goro was a joke.
Is it just me or does CGI Goro look a lot like CGI Hulk?
No he just came straight out of World of Warcraft...
Everything said here is 100% true
Gunship ftw
Shouldn't he put minor spoilers in the title instead of the description.
Thought it was really boring. Kano was good, but apart from that it looked like a low budget fan film. The one from '95 was much better.
I am trying to understand, why does everyone say kano was good? He was either being annoying as hell or getting his ass whooped and made out to be the heel?
The biggest problem with Kano is that he's just mimicking the character from the 1995 movie, which made him come off like a cartoon character in this one. I wasn't expecting much and thought it was okay. EVERY character was utterly lacking in charisma. Like they were all portrayed by Blandy McBlandface. Litarally nobody stood out. Cole Young was completely pointless and could have been replaced by any number or characters from the game. The one thing that this movie did really well, and was a really good choice, was to frame it almost like a horror movie.
It wasn’t amazing, but it’s very enjoyable and has me excited for the sequel. While Cole Young is a kinda boring lead, I think that has more to do with writing and direction than the actor’s talent.
It has everything to do with him being a made up Mary Stu of a character.
The whole movie felt as if hollywood funded an amateur group of MK fans.
Casting was terrible for Liu Kang, Shang Chung, Reiko and ESPECIALLY Raiden!
Outworld was literally a mining site with a giant Goro statue,
Raiden's "temple" was another mining site,
fights were taking places in completely boring sites including a parking garage building,
outside a barn
and my personal favourite in a kitchen and bathroom !!????
The actor that played Kano was spot on, but god damn, did he talk too much!
The MK quotes felt forced and it had too many 90's references and cringy humour...
And somehow even though they showed gruesome fatalities,
I didn't feel the fatalities added anything to the film...
Honestly I feel the MK 11 game's plot, settings, character's facial likeness to the original games(with the exception of Raiden, Scorpion and Sheeva) and even the actor's performances, are far superior to this movie!
A better Mortal Kombat movie would be the Undisputed franchise. If it had magic and was based on MK. The fights are well shot
Raiden and Shang Tsung just did not work for me, the others were all great...well except Cole. The film was not bad and I am looking forward to a sequel but they kept things a bit too basic and it needed more lore.
Joe Taslim (SubZero) was awesome! His moves and punches looked so powerful and well controlled! Awesome choreography! 🔥
They should look powerful, not well controlled. The action was underwhelming IMO.
To me it was worrying that we returned to random rock quarries like in Annihilation.
Unfortunately the movie that follow was a mess. Raiden makes no sense. Scorpion makes no sense. Kano is charming but never gets a win against another character so he’s literally a joke when it comes to kill him off.
The marking thing made no sense. Jax power are to grow robot arms? Why not his shockwave attacks? Jax was powerful BEFORE the arms. Why you nerf Jax?
Hell the movie never actually explains what MK actually is. They first tell you we’ve lost 9 of them before we ever find out what it is.
Feels like people are desperate to like this one and are going really easy on it for some reason. I wanted to like it too but it suuuuuuucked.
I was just glad they kept the wire work under control. Nothing worse than a fake looking flip.
