Mini Review of using the modi for music in my system: I understand some of you may still want my opinion on what its like to use the Modi in my system for music as the main DAC. Essentially its the same as using the internal DAC of my Node 2i, there is a smidgen more sparkle in the highs but I wouldn't say its better or an upgrade just slightly more sparkle. It would be more of an upgrade for anyone using PC audio or if you have a super cheap amp that doesn't have a DAC or has a really crappy DAC then the Modi will be a great option. Hope this helps.

Agreed. If you are using an older AVR that was less than ~$1000 new, then the Modi is likely a sonic step up from the internal DAC. I use one in my bedroom to feed an old Pioneer AVR.
Still wish Bluesound would offer a Node without a built-in DAC and knock $100 off the price.

Interesting discussion, I certainly enjoy watching videos like this. I use a desk system and I don’t sit that far away from my DAC, but I really appreciate how easy it is that my Bifrost 2 has a remote control for me to switch between music (iPad via USB) and movies/games/computer (optical SPFIF).
I think Modi would certainly be good enough for casual TV (I was using a Modi 3+ as my main DAC) but I honestly gained so much midrange clarity and overall separation when I upgraded to Bifrost 2. It’s shocking how easily I noticed it. Just sharing my experiences, not prodding you to change DACs!

I just purchased a $129 Modi + and having listened to it on an $8k stereo, bypassing the internal DAC on the CD player using the coaxial output, it appears to be just about as good as anything. Miles ahead of the “cheap” stuff, and sounding not much worse than the best of the best. I have to try all 3 inputs and on a variety of hardware with it yet, but I’m already tempted to deem it the best value simple straight DAC for the money..👍🥳

Once you get to the Modi 3+ level, getting better is VERY Subtle.... At a local audio shop, they did a blind AB Test between the Modi 3+ and the Denafrips Aries 2 connected to a Mark Levinson Integrated amp. The difference was so very slight, certainly NOT worth the price difference. There is certainly a "Good Enough" point in Hi Fi, it's just some people have money to burn.

I've been using a Schiit Modi 2 Uber for about 8+ years with my main PC, and it has been great. Just got the new Modi+, and it's great. The Modi+ doesn't use a wall wart for power, just USB, so it runs very cool, no warmth at all, where the Modi 2 Uber would run pretty warm. I can't really tell any sound difference in the old modi and the new one, they both sound great.

I use my Benchmark DAC1 hdr in my bedroom/tv system as both dac and preamp.
Having a world class preamp (with analog inputs) as part of the dac has its advantages.
BTW if the streaming service such as Netflix allows you to choose 2 channel (as opposed to 5.1) the sound is even better than just having your tv do the downmix to 2 channel.

    • @NemoPropaganda
      @NemoPropaganda  Před rokem

Yes Netflix always defaults to 5.1 and I’ve discussed with Netflix but there doesn’t seem to be a way to change this.
With the exception of Bravia Core, I know of no other streaming which even gives you this option.
However if I view Showtime, HBO or Starz via CZcamstv (as opposed to their apps) they are transmitted in two channel and they do indeed sound better.

    • @NemoPropaganda

I believe I covered that in the video, if I did that I would have to get up everytime and press the buttons on the DAC to change the input as most DAC do not have a remote control. most likely not, very rare but some TV's do let you control volume via optical out but most don't.

@@NemoPropaganda And what is the source of the TV digital signal? Basically, I have an optical digital from the TV running into my AVR, so I'd get "surround sound" if available. I only use it for OTA HDTV so I don't know if they send more than stereo channels, perhaps you know. Otherwise my AVR getd DD/DTS from my Roku via HDMI or DVD player via HDMI. If I used a DAC it would only be stereo, right?

Dude, you made a video approximately a year ago crapping on the Elac Debut B5.2s stating that "yes, they will sound better with better and more expensive equipment - but why would anyone do that?" (I'm paraphrasing). But then you make this video saying that you are using one of the least expensive DACs with a 20k system. I'm sorry but I feel that is hypocritical. I feel anyone can mix and match gear at any price point - it's totally fine. Who is to judge? You're doing it yourself.

Did you watch the video bro? I'm using this cheapo DAC to watch TV, that's not hifi my man. As far as the Elac that is true and many reviewers have said the same thing. Most Elac speakers sound just okay on similarly priced gear and the raving reviews many of their speakers got was by using much more expensive gear. I fail to see the issue or how any of this is hypocritical. Should I be using a $1000 DAC to watch TV? It really seems like you didn't watch the whole video...
