- Kenya's ports are a lifeline for the economy of the region, facilitating trade through the sea with a linkage to multimodal transport systems.
Kenya Ports Authority has invested in the development and modernization of ports and related facilities to enhance efficiency and competitiveness in shipping and maritime logistics.
The Port of Mombasa; the most modern in the East and Central Africa region now has a capacity to handle 2.1 million TEUs annually.
The construction of the Naivasha Inland Container Depot and the rehabilitation of the Inland Container Depot in Nairobi has also improved logistics by bringing port services closer to the hinterlands and to the transit markets customers.
The dry ports are linked by the SGR freight train from the Port of Mombasa enhancing the ease of cargo movement and improving efficiency at the port of Mombasa.
The Port of Lamu, the second commercial port in the country became operational in 2021 and currently has three complete berths with a quay length of 1200 metres.
Similarly, the revamping of the Port of Kisumu has opened up the nyanza region to more trade with vessels plying the waters of Lake Victoria, Port Bell and Jinja in Uganda as well as Mwanza in Tanzania.
