I'm still confused as to why Simple plan is "Terrible" when anything MCR does is the best rock of the 2000s? i remember everyone lumped the two together and said these bands are the reason rock is dead

Well to answer your question in short form, nostalgia mostly, but also MCR always had a very dedicated fanbase which really appreciated their work and meaning behind their songs, while Simple Plan was that band who really tried to be hip with the pop punk scene of the early 2000s but other than that never had a very distinctive look other than being like a safer version of Blink-182
Plus MCR always had the theatrics which might make them look corny but at least it also made them look authentic in some way which culminated in the Black Parade which is now considered as their best album, while Simple Plan weren't any different from any other pop punk band of that time other than being Canadian
And finally, say whatever you want about MCR but their lyrics and concepts at least had a paid off for their music style, either the whole "Demolition Lovers" storyline in Three Cheers which mixes very well with the angsty post hardcore sound, or the existential Black Parade which switches to a more arena rock oriented sound and it's also about a cancer patient dying and his final thoughts
Meanwhile Simple Plan... i won't deny somebody will obviously relate to them, and i find some of their songs very overhated, but there's a reason why they are always associated with stuff like I'm Just a Kid or How Could This Happen to Me, and why they never had any kind of revindication while MCR had

Man, only three albums ranked around a 4/5 for 2004. And there's no American Idiot.

"American Idiot" seems to be at #406 on the 2004 chart, with a 3.34/5 average. It is also the 5th most rated album of the year, with over 21k ratings!

It's really easy to remember that album having only a positive reception, but it seems to have gone through some level of reappraisal over the years and isn't as hyped up as it once was anymore. Could just be internet circles doing their thing, being insular.
