You should do this for certain genres
When is your top 10 albums coming?
couldnt watch past you not having listened to all those great albums then talking about how you're gonna do your "kanye top 10" jesus christ man
Listen to more albums dude
I think it focuses very much on sound, it's very avantgarde so to speak. When I take lyrics more into account, I would place Blood On The Tracks before Blonde on Blonde, and I miss some great lyricists
For me as soon as Kid A was revealed as #2 it was obvious OK Computer was gonna be at the top.
Agreed. When top 2 wasn't revealed, I was predicting OKCOM and PhysGraf, but as soon as I saw Kid A at 2, no.1 was too damn obvious
Becasue of how rym works, radiohead gets super high up. Even their lowest rated (aside form Pablo honey) get number 1 of the year
Samee, legendary album, deserves that spot for sure
Schweppley nah Radiohead don’t have the top 2 albums ever lmao
@@musiclifter5424 Any album in the top spot, regardless of its greatness, is going to make every other album in the top 100 look like it was cheated. Ok Computer is still good, although I don't know about whether Kid A deserves that second place.
You just gonna scroll past "What's Going On", "Bitches Brew" & "A Love Supreme" like they don't exist? smh
And Madvillainy 😡
Racism. (Joking)
Some of the best on the entire list
Jon is pretty uninformed for a critic. He didn’t even know Spiderland
I will never forgive him for ignoring madvillainy. That album deserved to be at least top 15
If you plan on continuing this series, Album Of The Year is another similar site that also has similar lists.
Yessssssss
That would be interesting
Only Radiohead and Velvet Underground there 😂. No shade.
@@Operation_Lukey actually i think its a more reliable source than RYM, where you'll find 7 finnish black industrial metal in the 2010s top albums hahahaha
Yes...i think the site has...interesting stuff.
Gonna be honest, the list overall is pretty solid.
Yezzir!
@Angelicc you can't really disagree
All 3 of the Radiohead albums are deserved
@A A Bruh if you love them then you'd definitely appreciate them being in the top 10 three times lmfaoooo
A A the thing is for any artist that is that high they are always gonna get some hate like saying it’s ‘overrated’ which is why it is hard making a ranking list but imo 3 Radiohead albums deserve top 10 but not necessarily in the correct order as I think In Rainbows is a bit better than Kid A
The first side of “Meddle” is great but side B is entirely filled with “Echoes “ which is probably my favourite track of all time. I’m a massive Floyd fan and it feels like everything the band had been up to that point and would become in the coming years.
It’s not top 5 Pink Floyd tho
Meddle is my favourite PF album
tf? What's #5?? @@donkey3235
In the Court of the Crimson King is such an experience. Definetely deserves top 5.
Yes omg ik this was a year ago but ITCOTCK IS SO FUCKING GOOD
I’ve only listened to 21st century schizoid man and I talk to the wind (one of my favorite songs of all time). I think imma listen to it in a bit cuz it intrigues me a lot
Spiderland by Slint is incredible and you would like it
One of my favorite albums of all time
Spam singles saame
Recently watched the documentary on them and this album. Very cool.
@@xio9759 Breadcrumb Trail? fuckin awesome doc for, in my opinion is one of the best albums of all time
@@adamgorsky8422 The interesting thing about post rock is it prides itself on being the DIY genre where thousands of bands record unique tracks sue to the tune varieties and the improved nature of the music.
I was going to say my fav album of all time is aja steely dan. World class writing and performances. It's also very chill so you don't feel your going on a wizard of oz emo journey you can just pick any of the varied tunes and enjoy. Having said that id now say aja or none due to infinate highly original improv style albums from post rock.
As a radiohead fan I'm loving this list. Tho still i would love to have more varity in the genres
But theres ton of genres like: Progressive Rock, Hip Hop, Math Rock, Bebop, Folk, Post Punk, Art Punk, Krautrock, Soul, Experimental Hip Hop, Baroque Pop, Jazz, Electronic, Jazz Fusion, Post Rock, Tharsh Metal, New Wave, Heavy Metal, Physcodelic rock, Proto Punk, Avant Garde Jazz, Noise Pop, Experimental Rock, Dream Pop, Jazz Rap, Noise Rock, Chamber Pop, Ambient, Art Pop, IDM, Shoegaze and of course Rock and alternative rock
@@nibyafternight1983 I know but mainly the list is dominated by rock and metal's subgenres
@@irem8126 But that's most ratings mate; Acclaimed music has a bit more diversity in their list but not by much. I just personally think rock music has a much more well developed sound than most other popular genres, except maybe jazz.
@@irem8126 I mean those are some of the most acclaimed genres and have been around for decades and decades influencing genres that followed so I can’t really say it’s too much of a surprise
As a huge music fan for over 40 years I don't really get the amount of high praise Radiohead get. I have The Bends which is a great album and OK Computer, which has some really great tracks on it, but I don't like Kid A, which a lot of people call the greatest thing ever. There's so many classic albums that could wipe the floor with Kid A. Albums which have stood the test of time of 50 years or more and are still regarded as classic albums.
Listen to 'Meddle' if, for nothing else, the track "Echoes" - one of Pink Floyd's best songs, whether on acid or sober (I've done both) 🤯
Oh my god you're so cool for doing acid I bet you have so many friends
@@evangplayer1829 ...Who hurt you? 😅
@@evangplayer1829 dude chill
The chart is created by an algorithm that aggregates the ratings of every album. The number of ratings an album has affects the placement in the charts as well as the overall rating itself. It should also be noted that the ratings of more active users have more weight on the overall rating than the ratings of users who just rate a little and dip. So no one is really deciding the placement of the albums, the algorithm places them based on these factors.
Damn, skipping over the Glow Pt. 2
You need to listen to in the court of the crimson king
Yes Rank all of Kanye's albums. You already did it when Kendrick, so why not?
Alex_flamer Well Kendrick only has four albums
I didn't do it with Kendrick, lol. He doesn't have enough albums
ARTV do it pls, I’d love to discuss it with you!
ARTV he does
The Reverse -Flash more
Meddle is my all time favorite Pink Floyd Album and Amnesiac is currently one of my favorite Radiohead albums. Two albums I would consider as underappreciated if not underrated.
I can tell they tried a lot of stuff in meddle a lot of different themes but it pays off when you get to echoes
Oh my goodness, pink moon by nick drake is so beautiful in so many ways, oughta miss that guy
You should give King Crimson a listen! In the court of the crimson King is there best
I think that the best way to introduce someone to KG is by Red
Mxx0 Nah, Crimson King is the better introductory record. It’s really accessible and the songs aren’t too long
Larks is the best
Mxx0 I would say their debut is the best introduction, but honestly they have so many line up changes that result in the band sounding so different every few albums that I think you’d need a couple of introductions to KC. I personally started with the debut. Then got larks tongues in aspic and discipline. Each are so different and the give you a feel for some of the different eras of the band. While I think red is great I think it’s better to work your way into that one. Just my opinion tho
Man, no rush? Was kinda hoping to see atleast one of their albums in the top 100
@Jake Moran At least Close to the Edge by Yes is in the top 100
I agree Moving Pictures is fantastic
@Jake Moran check the ratings on it + they're who turned me into rush and geniuses (you can do only prog rock lists)
@Jake Moran look further cuz like mars volta got 5th on 2003 chart and tool 4th on 2001 with 3.93 the genral chart isn't that accurate
@Jake Moran tool is 138 on general chart tho
David Bowie actually made it on there, wow, I’m really happy now
Ok computer is BY FAR my favorite album of all time. Absolute masterpiece.
If you’re gonna check out Swans, I highly recommend “White Light From The Mouth of Infinity.” It’s more goth rock inspired and very accessible to first time listeners.
Jon, one suggestion I can tell you is that the RYM's charts can let you filter if you wanna see albums of a certain genre, year, decade, or if it's a compilation of various artists
Been waiting for this video, heck yeah man 🤘🤘
Why the heck is "The Wall" at 101??
I was asking the same question
Exactly, it should be ALOT lower.
because it's overrated
Should be waaaaayyyy higher
Yesssss. More ARTV content to make my quarantine more bearable
Please listen to The Smiths. I'd suggest The Queen is Dead first, and then Meat is Murder (which is very underrated imo).
Yes tales from topographic oceans is better.
We need best shifts in quality between the albums like Section .80 to GKMC (not saying S80 bad album, just GKMC had some of most iconic rap songs of all time like Swimming Pools or m.A.A.d city )
Aja by steely Dan is one of the best musical masterpieces ever produced
Thanks for the lil shoutout man! Glad you’ve been spinning more tribe in your free time 😎😎 As a longtime user of RYM there are some artists that have a lot of high praise on there, for better or for worse lol
Slint’s spiderland is a classic! I think you would dig it for sure
This list is sooo much better than The Rolling Stone Magazine’s
I for one would love a top 10 for The Cure
1. Pornography
2. Disintegration
3. Seventeen seconds

Do you plan on ever doing an updated list of your favorite albums like you did for your favorite bands. I think I would be interesting to see the changes in your list!
Loving this series!! You should do now Best albums of the 2010s according RYM
I quite like this list. Unlike the Rolling Stone Magazine Top 500 albums that has just been updated. Man, that magazine is moribund. Cheers.
Pretty obvious that Radiohead fans bombed the entire survey
Wow he just said he really likes post rock, but haven’t heard Godspeed You! Black Emperor??
Damn, Rocked and now you? Today's a good day
Mon the Biff!
Out of all the music rating websites I feel like this one is the most accurate
The most basic*
Fun House is my favorite album ever made. I definitely recomend it.
Rain Dogs is a great place to start with Waits. You want to remember though that he has a few different periods and you might be really, really into one but not the others.
Meddle is closer to the more experimental early Floyd but starting to have the Radio anthems of albums like Dark Side and The Wall. I love it but it might not work for some folks.
You definitely want to hear King Crimson if you like Prog.
Nice video. Thanks!
Been waiting for this one. Keep it up Jon.
3rd video and digging the way you talk about music. CSNY, Radiohead, dubstep, metal, prog rock, Sonic Youth, Sufjan Stevens .. and the I Don't Get Arcade Fire, haha. (Don't sleep on King Crimson.)
I really was expecting to see some strokes records. Is this it, room on fire and the new abnormal should have been here.

Some type of Beatles ranked video would be cool to see on your channel. You haven’t ever done a video on them and it would be interesting to see where you rank songs/albums from their discography
The ones I've heard:
-Surfer Rosa (only heard it once but it's very good)
-Loveless (PERFECT ALBUM)
-Souvlaki (this made me cry and loved it instantly)
-Daydream Nation (got it on the 2nd listen and it's amazing)
-Dummy (great record)
-Doolittle (also very good)
-The Bends (not a huge fan of this album, but I like it)
-OK Computer (I have a CD copy and it sounds awesome!!)
-Kid A (really good, I'm not crazy about it, but I recommend listening to it)
-Nevermind (obviously. This is awesome stuff)
EDIT: I'm surprised to see the list grew quickly :O
That's a really cool list of albums, keep it up!

daydream nation is the best album of all time
Eh I think Loveless is overrated
@@ajvorob9117 well, that's valid, but it helped me go through an existential crisis, so each to their own
There is way too much reverence for modern music.
What about Thriller? Master of Puppets? Paranoid by Black Sabbath? Songs in the Key of Life? Abbey Road? Yellow Brick Road by Elton John?
I love Radiohead, but this list does not do enough to span across genres in the right way.
A “greatest album” needs to keep all things in consideration. The time period in which it came out. How dynamic it was. How much it’s not only had an impact on you- the listener- but the artists who came after it. As well as the world it created in the consciousness of people once the album is released.
For example- In the Court of the Crimson King- fantastic album. Everyone should hear it... But it belongs somewhere in the 7-10 range. This is Greg Lake’s only album with the band. It’s prolific. But better than Abbey Road? No.
This comment. You’re awesome and I agree with every word. 😐👍🏾
Abby road being 14 is already way too high. Shouldn't even be in the top 100
All that albums you mentioned at the top of your comment are not worthy of being in here
Other than songs in the key of life, they are all overrated asf
@@jsjwhw8254
1) Each of the albums I listed have influenced modern music and media in a way that changed the landscape of art forever after it was released.
2) So you're saying that this list is pretty spot on?
first of all this is an average created by the ratings of the people. It is not a very spot on list due to the fact that there's not someone to decide in what spot something goes. It is mostly determinated by an algorithm based on people opinions
1) Thriller is the #3 best album of 1982 and the best 327 album of all time According to RYM it is actually very high and is Regarded as the best pop album ever in the community
2) Master If Puppets is the second best album of 1982 and the 106 best album ever (very close to 100) and is in the top 10 best metal albums ever
3) Paranoid is literally the highest Metal album ever. The best metal album of all time. But this guy didn't show it. It is the 18 best album of all time
4) similar to Paranoid, song in the key of life was the highest soul release ever but he didn't show it in the video. It is the 68 best album of all time
5) Yellow Brick Road Is the #25 best album of 1973 and in the spot #1,099 overrall (quite high actually for being a top 5000)
I believe you can start anywhere with Waits. 'Bone Machine' was the album that creeped the fuck out of me when I was a kid, and it holds up.
Absolutely agree with you about the rubber soul, it’s got this coffee and cigarette in the morning vibe that’s so cozy
Not to be that girl.....but where were all the girls?
sleater kinney, lauryn hill, broadcast, stereolab, and cocateu twins shouldve been here somewhere. at least they had bjork
I agree here, but there are a few female artists/ bands with girls in them (Kate Bush, Bjork, Sonic Youth)
Joanna Newsom and Lauryn Hill are the glaring omissions I noticed in this list. I'm sure there's a fair few others too.
My Bloody Valentine has a girl in it
MyArt View A lot of the list was rock albums and rock is a very male dominated genre.
For Tom Waits I'd say dont start with Rain Dogs, its a great album but I think theres other albums that are easier listening to progress you into some of his more experimental stuff (like Rain Dogs). His earlier work is alot more laid back, less experimental and his voice isnt as gravelly like his later work. So starting off with some of his earlier work then I'd say go to Swordfishtrombones, then rain dogs, then get into more of his later stuff. Although Mule Variations from his later career has a good variety of both of his different eras. His later career is arguably alot better imo, Bone Machine, Mule Variations, Rain Dogs, Swordfishtrombones, but I do like his first one as well Closing Time. But yeah Tom Waits is great, would highly recommend.
I agree.... although I would say that Swordfishtrombone is a better starting point into the madness. Rain Dogs is certainly the Magnum Opus of his work, but I think that without knowing the depth of variety in his work, swordfish gives you a good insight into the rich storytelling that involves lyrical, musical and highly experimental methods. Really cool stuf.f
Closing time. I've only just got into Tom Waits. I'm a 46 year old Englishman raised on Britpop and radiohead.
Hey Jon, I would love it if you do a top ten video for the cure! Probably my favourite band and i think they are releasing a new album this year or early next year!
I love seing my man Sufjan on that list. His song writing is INCREDIBLE!
Highly recommend RYM, it's where I've found 99% of the music I listen to today.
You're so right about Pink Floyd's Animals being good. Those plonkers at Rolling Stone Album Guide gave it just 2 out of 5.
I wanted Queen's A Night at the Opera to be in the top 100 because I love that. I did an internet search to find out its position on RateYourMusic and it is at number 756 which I think is ridiculously low.
This was a great video. I'm glad I got to hear you talk more about some classic records you haven't really mentioned on the channel before, and I hope this video exposes RYM to a new audience. Also, just wanted to say I highly recommend Meddle and In The Court Of The Crimson King. You said you weren't too familiar, and I think you should check them out, because both albums are great, and Echoes is one of the best songs the pop punk piece of trash that is myself has ever heard.
Good Kid and Twisted Fantasy deserve those high placements for sure, great albums! would have put Nevermind a little higher though, and i'm surprised Hybrid Theory or Meteora aren't on this, Hybrid Theory's my all-time favorite album!
that's just sad.. considering Chester always gave it his all throughout every performance, the lyricism in their discography.. RYM sort your shit out
@@Stefan_Gerards Yeah RYM generally hates stuff like Linkin Park. Hybrid Theory isn't even top 1k for it's year.
Tom Waits Closing Time, always start at the beggining
Entertaining list. My Top 5 #1 Record - Big 🌟 , Grace - Jeff Buckley , Remain In Light - The Talking Heads , Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys , Heaven Up Here - Echo & The Bunnymen. Van Halen , The Pretenders , Bobby Womack , Blur & Sonic Youth have albums I might list on any given day !

Mule Variations was my first Tom Waits. Fell in love
Real Gone I thought was a pretty accessible later album. Kinda played like his greatest hits, or greatest phases.
Laughing Stock is so great, if you’re not bothered to listen to the whole thing then pleeeassse at least listen to After the Flood. (also TMS being above Hounds of Love is a crime)
You really have to listen to spiderland by slint
If you haven’t already, you should listen to Atom Heart Mother by Pink Floyd. It’s criminally underrated.
Yes
Thank you. It’s so good. (You can probably tell by my pfp that I like it)
Please do a Top Ten on the Cure! or an album ranking. And I think it's funny that the top four albums are from 2 highly experimental bands.
I would love to see you do a video on Death Grips and hear your overall take on the band, their sound, and their future
It's ok. Geddy Lee went to a Lou Reed concert and left after the opening act of Genesis. You're in good company
Physical Graffiti? Who’s next?
Are you planning on listening to all those albums and interprets that you do not know and maybe make a series out of it? Just to know a bit about music history and reasons for which these albums are listed here? Order of the albums may be debatable as always but all of these albums are of the highest quality and everyone should know them and listen to them at least once.
There is also a list of 1001 albums which gives a little better overall overview on how we got where we are now, but lets say these 100 albums is a good start 😁
Def try out the smiths sometime! They don't disappoint imo 😊
i used to listen to Slowdive for a while, particularly their 2017 self-titled but i've sadly fallen off a little. probably bc the person who recommended them to me and i aren't friends anymore and it wasn't pretty. but i can't let that keep me from listening to Slowdive and/or Shoegaze in general!
Slowdive's music is gorgeous
Good and generaly agreeable list. Not fan of every single album here, but I totally get their apperance in top 100.
I suggest that you listen to the "Soundtracks For the Blind" (1996) album by Swans all the way through. It does take up a lot of time. It's about 2 and a half hours long but it's truly a phenomenal, mesmerizing record. Everyone should listen to it all the way through at least once in their life!
Another totally clueless video. FFS
My problem with a lot of lists like these is that they seem to equate or correlate popular/public opinion and popularity with quality. That’s rarely if ever an accurate depiction of quality. If you’re truly going to let that guide your thinking then you’re going to miss out on great and better music.
Because that's what is usually the best. Most of these albums are highly influential and therefore some of the greatest of all time. If something is so underground that hardly anyone knows of it, how can it honestly be considered "best of all time"? Best is suggestive, but tbh things don't get popular for no reason. A lot of these classics are just really good. What use is a list of "best of all time" if only a handful of people know the music on it? Boring to make, boring to read.
@Th.El.Co._1 I understand what you’re saying in regards to influence because that does matter and I agree that, generally speaking, the popular albums are the better albums. However,I think that using popularity and influence does have its flaws. Both of them are influenced by trends and cultural context. Popularity is also influenced by name value,advertising/promotion,features,and lyrics among other things that have little or nothing to do with quality. I don’t think it’s the best criteria to use,and I think if you look at music for what it actually is rather than what popularity says it is then lists like these would be very different.
I think though this list pretty diversified when and just hip hop or pop also rock, Progressive Rock, heavy metal, jazz, blues rock etc. It didn't which have even one country album, not one by Johnny Cash. But other than it's pretty diversified list and that's something I will give credit. And in my honest opinion way better list than Rolling Stone "100 best songs of this century so far" because that list had some good songs and had few rock songs and a good country song "Johnny Cash Hurt" it was terrible list most of the songs on there were mostly just pop.
There has to be some sort of popular weighting because otherwise albums with a tiny number of very enthusiastic fans would undeservingly reach the top ranks. If an album is really that great, you'd expect it to become known by word of mouth and to maintain a high rating even as its popularity grows. The creators of the site have also recognized recently that the current algorithm is reaching a breaking point because of growth in the site's popularity and they're going to soon introduce a new ranking that lowers the weight of popularity. That said, I think RYM clearly does much better than something like the Rolling Stones top 500 when it comes to balancing accessibility with artistic value. Keep in mind that most of these albums / artists will never reach much of the general public. Though they're beloved on the site, how many people of this generation have actually heard of Death Grips or Radiohead (beyond Creep)? Forget about Godspeed You!, Swans or Slint.
@@micshazam842 What do you think makes it narrow and what kinds of music would improve it? I'm interested in these lesser known gems.
Dude, great video I have nearly all of those albums, but please take time out for Swans...I saw them live a few years ago and they blew me away...

No Queen shocked me. I expected at least 5 or six queen albums on here. At least as many as Bowie.
Meddle in my opinion is essential and while not quite as good as The Wall, Wish You Were Here or Dark Side of the Moon (I'm stunned The Wall wasn't higher), those albums may not have existed if it wasn't for Meddle. Truth be told, I actually think Fear of Music is a better album than Remain in Light, though it is hard to go wrong with Talking Heads. I'd be curious to know what you think of The Mars Volta or Rx Bandits (though the latter is less well known and I only discovered them out of sheer luck).
I think fear of music is better as well
I was happy when Lift Your Skinny Fists was at 13. That album is a masterpiece.
PLEASE RANK KANYE ALBUMS!!!!
Radiohead being my favourite band with pink floyd second, this list was nice to see
I didnt get swans untill i saw them live in berlin some years ago. It was amazing and the ticket prices are unlawfully cheap.
I enjoy these videos
You should definitely check out Spiderland by Slint, Godspeed You! Black Emperor Raise your Skinny Fists, especially if you like Explosions in the Sky
People complaining about their favourite album placement when they haven't even heard any of the albums above that particular record is hilarious
It's even funnier to see you can't spell hilarious
@@jacobh2147 It isn't tho, my autocorrect is in my own language and It wouldn't be worth It to change It just for one comment, it would be even more hilarious if you took my previous comment personally
@@alejandrogarciaazcarreta4250 didn't take it personally and it's not that hard to live with Spanish autocorrect, solo te viste como un idiota jaja

I’d love to hear your thoughts on a Sufjan record
If you want a good starting point for Tom waits, “bone machine”, “rain dogs”, “SwordfishTrombones”, and “blood money” are all excellent starting points. I’m a bit biased since i enjoy his whackier side and not his bluesy piano bar side.
rubber soul is my favourite album
Happy to see a handful of legendary classic rock albums make the list! Close to the Edge was my introduction to Yes. Huge fan of The Doors’ debut as well as the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd albums on the list.
Closing Time by Tom Waits is a good starting point. It's Piano Rock - Singer/Songwriter at it's best and you get a slight sense of his vocal style. After this he experiments more with Dark Cabaret, Blues and Art Rock. I recommend Rain Dogs at next.
Thank you!
@@ARTV- *"Frank's Wild Years"* is awesome! Granted it's the only Tom Waits album I know, so what do I know? LOL
I'm so happy that today TPAB is now #5
Meddle is one of pink Floyd's most underrated albuns
Echoes and one of these days are some of their best work
Give it a listen
Fearless is amazing
How can you say it's the most underrated album?
I don't see meddle as being Floyd's most underrated album, because it gets talked about a lot and is even on this list of top albums of all time. What are you talking about? *"most underrated album"* ??? How?
"A saucer full of secrets" is amazing and I never hear about it. That album is more fitting towards your statement. A momentary lapse of reason, the final cut & the division Bell... Also great Floyd albums that don't appear to get love. But *Meddle?* No, meddle it gets lots of recognition.
@@janX9 "one of the most underrated"
*"one of"*
Tbf when people talk about meddle, they usually talk about echoes
