Our Song, Newfoundland and Labrador Tourism

  • To some, it’s just another raucous, toe-tappin' jig. But to us?
It’s a testament to our resilience. To our sense of humour. To our unwavering sense of community.
It’s history. Culture. Folklore. And a guarantee to get nan up on the dancefloor, bad hip and all.
A song so distinctly ours that you can almost feel the salt air on your skin when you hear it.
And no matter where you find yourself in Newfoundland and Labrador, you’ll quickly realize that this place, with its people, scenery, and unique charm, is just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside.

After NFLD'ers opened their homes to thousands of stranded airline passengers for five days in Sept 2001, this is how VRBO/Expedia Group repays the generosity? Using an iconic song, that can ONLY be identified with the people and the province as a backdrop to poke fun at rental accommodations, was insulting and hurtful. The irony was that these wonderful generous people didn't take a dime for handing over their their homes, their schools, their churches, to perfect strangers in need, no matter how humble they might have been. They didn't just insult NFLD'ers with their ad, they insulted all Canadians who hold the people and this beautiful province in a very special place in our hearts.
Beautiful response NFLD & Labrador Tourism to their blunder. I hear that they are taking down the commercial, and do hope VRBO offers special deals to travellers visiting Newfoundland to make up for the insult and the damage they might have done.

    Newfoundland/Labrador ROCKS.
    Chicken are beautiful.
    Pigs are intelligent.
    Farmers feed us all.
Muddy boots means adventures, chores, and spring days.
    VRBO missed the boat!

I learned this song from my grandmother who was born in Trinity in 1932, before Newfie joined confederation. She never had a Canadian passport, but a UK one! She came to Ontario with my grandfather in the 50s. Alan and Ellen Moore.

They reused stock footage from other ads. Not that impressive.

@@LimeGreenLime The music was recorded in the studio on Monday specifically for use in this ad. Then they had to find appropriate clips in their archive (which, having been the agency of record for NL Tourism for over 15 years, likely has thousands of hours of footage), and then bring it all together into a coherent whole. And that's only AFTER they had to actually decide what the right creative approach would be to best counter the VRBO ad. Not nearly as simple as you imply. But yes, Target (the agency that created this ad) makes it look easy, because they're one of the best agencies in Canada.

You have no idea how much work goes into an ad of this quality, in such a short amount of time. Easy for you to say it's not impressive sitting behind your keyboard. @@LimeGreenLime

When I first heard the VRBO commercial, I was excited to hear the song, because it was always sung by my dad, while playing the accordion, when I was young. Maritimers alike would have warm feelings and become nostalgic upon hearing this. As I watched how the commercial played out, I wondered, who in their right mind would use this song in such a way. Snotty idiots who did not do their research. It just solidified my decision to only use Airbnb. Hey VRBO, take down the commercial, fire the person who chose it, and apologize!

Do you know why? It's because it was an extension of the Newfie Joke. Newfoundland music has some of the best ballads and waltzes you can hear. But other Canadians heard this and latched on to its "goofiness". Thinking they had some clear view of the culture etc.

I was wondering wtf when I heard the NL song on a superbowl ad? Very odd that they'd use that particular song to show a negative experience on VRBO.
