  • In this video I will talk about the R35 Nissan GTR and why it isn't the supercar killer everyone thinks it is. Everything you ever needed to know about the GTR from someone who worked with the car for over 5 years.
    Corrections:
Due to the sheer quantity of information I'm bound to have messed some details up, these corrections will be found here.
-Carrera GT I accidentally highlighted the car making it appear as if I have driven it on track. I have driven the carrera, not the carrera GT my mistake.

Spot on. To me this video is basically - "Tell me how you don't own a GTR / a supercar in a video." Having a few crazy cars of my own, I would say the GTR is the perfect weekend / occasional grocery getter / highway cruiser.
If I wanted to do a track day I'd hop in the 911 GT3 - but on a daily basis to lift the car everytime I see a speedbump is just way too much work.
If I wanted to have a nice drive to work and back I'd just get in the M4 - but it doesn't have enough soul from the S55 and the sound from the back is.. not great. But it does have great fuel economy.
If I wanted a compromise between the 2, I'd pick the GTR, every day.

Dude, you can’t compare Supercars that come with $150-$230,000-plus price tags to a car that costs 50-100% less. You’re not comparing apples with apples. For someone to get the performance of a GTR without paying through the nose (as you would for a Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini) the options are extremely limited. If you want the types of upgrades of those brands and models expect a hefty jump in price for a GTR to match the Supercars you compare them to…but for me (as a previous GTR owner) I can honestly say that it was never worth it to buy a Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini because the cost/benefit ratio was/is insanely out of balance. They’re really more of a status symbol for those who can afford them rather than a good value for money proposition.

One more thing to add. You mentioned that Nissan can improve the GTR by allowing locked power distribution for AWD. Aftermarket AWD controller already exist exactly for this reason and run in the $500-$800 range. They have proven to improve handling immensely on the GTR. Another thing to note about the atessa system, which you got wrong.. It is not a 50/50 split ever. The most the car ever puts to the fron is roughly 18%, which is why an aftermarket AWD controller on these cars have a huge effect on the handling because they allow for a locked split up to 50%

It's center of mass and 4 wheel drive. It's not just the aggressive atessa system, it's where the weight it located. imagine pushing a stool from the bottom as an example of weight transfer. A stool is certainly more top heavy than a GTR but with over 500hp the transfer is noticable, I would recommend seeing the car in person next to other similarly priced supercars to better compare its general stature and height.

    I agree 100%...
but undeniably as you put it the cars saving grace is the price and aftermarket support. instead of putting 300K into a turbo S, I can put 200K into buying a new GTR and 100k into mods and come out the other side with a 3-5x better performing car. There is no faster street car. The GTR is king of roll and dig races. Texas2k 2023 shows us that the nissan v6 is more powerful than an R8 v10 or huracan v10 or Viper v10 with the proper mods. Track performance is a different story. I imagine it would end up being a similar story however with the money in mods being spent in the right places to gain that track performance over the straight line performance. That's part of the beauty of a GTR is that it can be molded to be anything you want that will outperform anything when you look at it from a Price/Performance stance.
Yes it needs a better interior, yes it needs to be updated to the R36 soon, yes it's not a german made car. However it is less expensive to maintain, less expensive to replace and has way more aftermarket support. great all-around car and super valid as a daily or race car.

I disagree. First, I would venture less than 5% of GT-R owners hit the track. Having a higher ride height is smart for the 99% of the time you drive on regular roads. I hate worrying whether I can clear a curb or angled slope. Second, the GT-R is a fraction the price of other supercars like the Huracan. Third, the analysis should be $/fun. Here, the GT-R is a huge winner as it brings a smile to face each time I drive it. Yes, I own a 2015 GT-R…and a Dodge Viper…and a custom built reverse trike….and my best friend owns a Huracan - point being I have experience for comparisons.

No one, in today's car scene, considers the GT-R as a Super Car (SC) In fact, it's been called the SC kllr. Maybe back in 2009 - 2012 it could've been considered as one, but in today's market it's nothing of the sort. It's $200k less than Lambo and $75k - $125k less than some Porsche SCs. In today's car scene we're purchasing used GT-R s and modifying them to kill those cars significantly more than the GT-R. Who buys a SC for a luxury ride? If you want a luxury ride, try a Benz, Bentley or Cadillac. No one purchasing a GT-R in the spirit of what it's for is looking for comfort. Yes, I own one and it meets my expectations, annihilating Vipers, ZR1s and sport bikes. Yes, it's modified, but the costs is nowhere near the cost of the aforementioned SCs. Out dated, I'll give you that, but I'll line it up against anything and know they'll get a run for their money. The GT-R is a sports car, not a SC. No one I know refers to it as a SC. It's clearly evident you never tapped into the car's true performance bc so many of your concerns would be mute.

You make a lot of valid points, but coming from an owner of a GTR, a lot of us didnt buy the car to keep it stock or solely for a track. I personally bought mine because it dominates everything in straight line performance. Obviously it takes money to do so, but coming in at less than half the cost of most of the cars you compare them to, I can live with it. Sure, the GTR does not live up to its name anymore in stock configuration, but only an idiot (IMO) would buy one of these cars brand new when a low mileage used one can be had for 60-80k. That also leads to where the biggest issue with the GTR stems... NISSAN's constantly raising the price of this car with no true improvements. If this was still a 70k MSRP car new, I suspect that you would not be so harsh. In conclusion, the GTR doesnt suck, but it is dated and overpriced.

First off, great video. Super informative. Your criticism of the Gtr's evolution over the years is fair. However, it's hard to compare the Gtr when it wad first T unleashed on this world to the current one. When the Gtr hit the scene it forced everyone to up their game. Compare a 2010 with other 2010s and it's clear the GTR is indeed the supercar killer. The crazy track times have been measured by others like top gear. The more recent Gtr's, I agree, have lost their edge. Not enough innovative improvements over the years.

In my opinion, supercars shouldn't be very luxurious, if at all. If you want to feel luxurious, get a luxury car like a Lexus, Bentley or others. If you want sheer speed, get a supercar. This is their intended purpose, so manufacturers need to stop slapping leather on any corner of the interior. Learn from the F40 and Dodge viper that didn't bother with any luxury at all

Currently GTRs are around $5K to $100K above MSRP, depending on the trim.
    Why?
Because of all the reasons you failed to mention:
    - The best bang for the buck to go fast IN A STRAIGHT LINE and not have a Mustang-YT moment
    - Airstrip Attack competition is basically ruled by Lambos and GTRs
    - On that note, GTRs will humiliate just about any supercar on a straight line with a few mods
Your argument revolves around, "but when you drive it in the track", over and over.
Have you been to a TX2K? Airstrip Attack? As mentioned previously, there are very few GTR owner that leave the car stock. My Black Edition had 650hp/650tq just with FBO/e85 at 7,000ft in elev (tuned by Tim Bailey). Plenty enough for me, but not to my friends with 1,000 and 1,500hp.
With the GTR, your pockets are the limit.
Now, to be fair, I did sell mine and got a '22 M4CxD. Out of the box, much faster and responsive than the GTR. And FBO/e85 is yielding better results as well with the new S58 engine that's been good for 1,000hp stock (according to YT). But with the BMW you will lose sound & looks, but you'll gain more power (stock), comfort, advance electronics, and luxury (compared to Nissan).
Yet, here I find myself eyeballing a T-Spec @ MSRP. Why? Because of the GTR's P-O-T-E-N-T-I-A-L!!! and driving experience for less than $150K
At the end of the day, you created a good "click bait", by using an overly sensationalized title that was going to hit a love/hate response from your viewers. But for a "GTR that SUCKS", it sure keeps its value better than the competition. >

I love how this car (base model GTR) is downplayed on its capabilities and yet every car it was compared to (besides the Z06, which by comparison is still slower than the GTR in a drag race) costs damn near $100k more.
I wonder what the car could be capable of on a track if all that residual money was spent improving it, so it’s a real apples to apples comparison. No need to even discuss 1/4 mile times... we all know who is king in that arena.
Nothing to see here... just a well edited video with a controversial title. Good job bud... you got me to watch it.
By the way, I drove the car at Exotic Racing out in Vegas... and it’s what made me buy the car. I know there are better handling cars out there, but for 90% of those super cars produced, they never see a track... so the GTR remains awesome in my book, and with the right mods, destroys everything in the real world, regardless of factory cost ;)

No one in the 90s compared a Supra with a Lambo of the time it just isnt fair neither considering price nor performance. The GTR is what it is, a gentle GT at an affordable price, want a track weapon? Go porsche gtrs. Want ultimate speed? Bugatti and Koeningsegg have many offers... I think it may age like the 300zx with all these "unobtainable" JDM original door liner/back seat or bespoke part that every previous owner threw in the rubbish prior or every part associated with a engine/Trans failure will cost the moon not in modified but as a original Nissan/NISMO product. All other volkswagens and supercars have quality control issues. They lack the spirit and character of a Nissan GTR. Still waiting to see a Volkswagen or any supercar built go faster on a drag strip or a air field faster than a built gtr. I agree that Nissan hasn't made any significant improvements over the last 10 yrs and is in serious need of refreshing! It needs 600-700 bhp, 7,000+ RPM rev, CF brakes, and a 7 or 8 speed trans....all standard equipment and not special models. This would help bring it up to speed with a lot of the current super cars.

And the comparisons being made here which are supposed to downplay the R35 just bring it back up. When a Nissan is objectively being compared to 2x-3x priced luxury supercars, you can't pretend it's a fair comparison. And as for track and speed, AMS would like to have a word with you. You can throw 20k into a 2012MY and outrun almost anyone for less than half the net price. Lots of people like to compare stock to stock, but when it comes to high performance vehicles, that becomes useless. Different manufacturers have different restrictions and goals, and the absolute potential of different models shouldn't fall victim to that.
I do seriously agree that Nissan is long overdue to refresh the car, but when did car enthusiasts give a shit about age? I thought half of it was enjoying all vehicles, not just recent ones.

Honestly, sounds like you want to hate the GTR, but don't. Good luck

i mean the GTR is good if you ask me I loved it if its like JDM or rocket bunny but the controller can be even better if you just tune it

With $5K worth of mods (FBO/e85), the GTR can safely and conservatively get to mid 600hp/tq range. What's that using the industrial standard of crank HP? 750hp? + AWD!
I think I only knew a hand full of GTR owners in the GTRLife forum that actually took their GTRs to the circuit, all others were focus on 1/4mi, 1/2mi., and 60-120mph+ times.
    Good points, never the less.

With that chassis and this engine, it would cost an unholy amount of money. Especially for a "daily driven sports car".

@@ooohhenrybmblm no offense mate! But I own 2 gt car cayman gt4 and evora gt410 so nissan should have no excuse...
Ps: I know gtr has a awd powerplant but the weight is more on the chassis and exterior design specially the boxy look. 991 is in the same alley of gtr so come on!

As a true R35 fan boy (since 2007), I do believe and/or know everything you said about R35, however I don't necessarily feel the same way about these facts. Yes it's tall, heavy, soft, always trying to take the wheel from a pro driver, and most of all, 16 year old (to this day), and no, I would never expect a 2024 GT-R can stay anywhere near a 992... any model. But, before 2014, aka the year Mizuno, the guy who created R35 left Nissan, there are a number of direct comparisons held by 3rd-party medias that proved R35 can go as fast as anything costs twice or even three times as much. No matter how it felt to drive, it did deliver some solid lap records, that alone says that R35 doesn't suck at all. As for its age, well, I'm pretty sure Mizuno wasn't expecting Nissan to keep selling a single model for over 10 years, so it's surely not his fault, it's just Nissan being greedy, refusing to pull the plug (in some way it's a good thing).
Back in 2007, when GT-R was first time revealed, it was advertised as a car that can be driven fast by anyone, anywhere, any time, and later it was referred as a "supercar killer". You see the problem now? It was never meant to be like all the other supercars that can go crazy fast in the hands of a pro, it was never specificly built for a pro, if you are expecting a "supercar" instead of its "killer", well you are expecting wrong, and the reasons for you to think GT-R sucks, the steel frame, the soft suspension, the AWD system, for me, they are simply choices Mizuno made, not exactly "flaws".
If all these was not convincing, let me ask you this: if Nissan made a supercar that performs, feels, costs like a 911, or 458, or 12C, or Vette, only with a GT-R badge, will it be any better than the actual R35?

I like how you just conveniently left out the price difference, profit margin and how much of a downhill the company was going through at the time. the reason why nissan didn't update the car is simply is company is not making enough money to justify the r&d.

Gtrs get owned at track days by light cars with half the power and aero. It would be fast after many mods. It's a safe street car really. There's probably loads of parts for them if it's been made for so long, it'll probably be good maintenance wise and you could daily the balls out of it. I would imagine that there will be a large aftermarket following because there will be loads of the same car for all those years and people get bored and start playing with their gtrs. I reckon there will be gtrs with 500,000 miles on them that are 40 years old and have never seen a barn or a trailer.

I might agree with some points. Not gonna lie - I'm just a backseat guy and don't know every detail about any of these cars, but I think you missed a thing.
Japanese cars, especially the turbocharged ones, were always about tuning. It all comes from the times of the gentleman's agreement, when car manufacturers limited the amount of horsepower to 280.
Now, even with that amount of power, cars were great. But the thing is, if we're talking about GT-Rs, most of the R32-R34s didn't really have that amount of power, it was bigger. Much bigger, in fact (the famed Calsonic R32, HKS, the R33 400R and so on, not to say that your "regular" GT-Rs can relatively easy reach 350-400hp). Back to your point about that you don't have to install mods to get more performance - maybe you're right, but to me, this car, along with the legendary JDM cars of the past, is and always has been about tuning and customizing it to your liking. VR38DETT is a worthy successor (if you could call it that) to the RB26 and has the same traits. With enough effort this engine will produce loads more power - say, 800hp for "everyday use" is somewhat realistic, while the heavily modified VR38DETTs in drifting can make a 1000 or even 1200hp.
Obviously, it's not just about the engine, suspension also can be modified to handle such power, and so is many, many more parts and systems.
That said, the ATESSA and weght things you said are really on point.
