    For anyone wondering, Minotaur was able to be born because his mother was a imortal goddess. Pasifae was a daughter of Helios and the Oceanid Perseis, she was part of a family of magicians (her sister was Circe and her brother was Aeetes, the father of Medea, all of those were magicians). So since she was a goddess she was able to gave birth to a minotaur that a regular human would not be able to.

      Is this also why the gods commit multiple acts of incest with no problem? I heard it's because they are made of the same divine substance called ichor which kinda cancels out the biological limitations of mortals.

      This also comes up in some variants of the story of Procris -- Pasifae curses Minos to ejaculate scorpions during sex, which doesn't bother *her*, but kills his mortal mistresses.

    • @sonofcronos7831
      @sonofcronos7831 Před 8 měsíci +28

      Yes. The sun god Helios that always appear in the East joined with the Oceanid Perseis (whose name means something like "destruction", a proper name to a nymph mother of magicians). From them were born Circe, Pasifae and Aeetes. Circe and Pasifae, who were immortal, were taken in their father Sun chariot to another islands, Circe to Aeaea, and Pasifae to Crete where she married Minos. Aetes however was mortal for some reason (sometimes you are unlucky and can be mortal even with imortal parents), and to him was given the land of Colchis. Aetes was the father of Medea, another witch, that appears in the Argonautica.

    • @jamessirot854

Typhon and Echdina were also imortal but their monster children were mortal (they would not die by old age but could be k1lled). River gods and Oceanids were imortal, but from their union were born Naiads, river nymphs that were also not imortal.

    Fun fact for why Crete keeps coming up with Bulls: Crete's original bronze age civilization, the Minoan civilization, wasn't actually Greek at all, it was its own seperate society we know very little about. One things we do know, or at least think, is that bulls were very important to their religion, because we keep digging up ruins and finding frescoes with Bull iconography, most notably depictions of "bull leaping", with people jumping over bulls.
    It's possible that Minoan civilization is also where the 'Labyrinth' myth originated in the first place: The Minoan civilization had these massive fortress-palaces that would have been very maze-like, especially to Greek visitors who didn't know about the 'rules' for getting around them.

    A maze generally works like a troll bridge, preventing you from getting to the other side.
    (Dude. I get you. I'm just getting revenge because I'm not a native English speaker and in Portuguese we have just one word for both: "Labirinto" whether it's a maze or not, and I had to learn that difference the hard way)
    I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. PLEASE KEEP UP.

    • @JakeDoubleyoo

      Yeah it occured to me at one point that, if the classical hero myths had to be placed at some point in irl history, it would be during the Greek bronze age. So it makes the most sense to draw inspiration from those civilizations. Minoan art is so beautiful too!
