Bird art by Cass: www.casswomack.com
Fashion is a fickle beast that molds and shifts with time, spawning new styles ranging from the modest and practical to the wacky and eccentric. This video will focus on the latter, and with the birth of human civilization giving rise to social structure thousands of years ago, there are no shortage of bizarre trends throughout history! First we'll dive into the bizarre trend of a fake limp, taking after an iconic princess of the age. To follow that up, we'll explore one of the pointiest fashion trends: Crakows. Finally, we'll learn why there was a period of time where everyone was crazy for pineapples! - Komedie

Fun fact: The reason pineapples are called pineapples is because "apple" used to just be a synonym for fruit in general before becoming the name of a specific kind of fruit.
ah, now it makes perfect sense. the pineapple: the fruit of the pine tree.
I thought it was because it looked like a pine cone.
This is why people often think the forbidden fruit in the Bible was an apple because the King James renders the word "fruit" as "apple."
@@childofnewlight Pretty sure KJV says fruit. Perhaps the Tyndale Bible?
Like how 'meat' used to mean 'kinda any food'?
Fun-fact:
I come from a small city in Germany. Our cityleader had successfully grown by himself pineapples in a orangery in the 18th century. He was so proud of it that he built pineapple-statues on every building he possessed. They're still on the roofs to this day.
What's the name of the city? Just so I can ogle the pineapples on Google

That painting by king Charles is actually a massive honor for that gardener. To be immortalized forever like that is difficult and it's likely the gardener couldn't have afforded a portrait like that anyway. Pretty cool
Dude, the gardener wasn't painted by King Charles. He was literally part of the painting to show the glory of the King. It's the same as when white people were painted with slaves pointing to them or handing them something on a platter. It was to glorify the white person and show that they were rich enough to own slaves.
The gardener is literally just set dressing. I don't remember if his name is remembered or there is a record of it, I hope there is, but he will have been completely overlooked by much of history. It was an honor, yes. But it's not exactly the way you described.
@Headache Chronicles obviously he wasn't painted by the king lmao I didn't say that. And no, he's not just set dressing, he's painting to intricate detail, whether he's the focus or not. Royal gardeners are also anything but "slaves" it's an esteemed position that pays quite well
@@skyetoddmakeup Ah to be so stupid and out of touch. This is what happens when you have no intelligence and just fake reddit values.
@@skyetoddmakeup The gardener is Jonh Rose and painting does not show that white people are rich and slave owners and wealthy because they have pineapple that's stupid and why would you even think of it they are both very obviously white persons in the middle of England and you are pushing agenda for no reason. Painting was probably to comemorate the death of Rose who was respected man on the court that is what RCT wrote as description below the image.

That thing with the Pineapples is actually very similar to Tulips. Beloved for their beauty, prices for still living bulbs skyrocketed during and after a tulip plague, causing them to be seen as status symbols with the wealthy having massive sects of their gardens dedicated to them. Funny thing is that tulip sellers eventually began taking pre-orders for them, proven in the form of vouchers which could later be turned in or even sold to someone else for a profit, leading to an actual speculative market on tulips... a speculative market on flowers, which obviously eventually crashed.
The original and best market bubble. The standard bearer for all to come.
Kinda the same with lobster actually. For a while it was seen as peasant food.
Then the wealthy tried it and capitalized on it.

Being a former wardrobe consultant I told that story so many times.
Although slight nuance, nowadays suits aren’t designed to be buttoned, so it throws off your silhouette to button the bottom button. It’s less faux pa now and more “you’re making yourself look worse.”
Does it really look that bad to button-up all the buttons??
@@chee.rah.monurB depends on your figure, how tailored the garment is, and what you’re going for.
If you’re heavy set, not wearing a particularly well tailored suit, and wearing a looser fit it won’t make _too much_ of a difference.
But if you’re slim, it’s very well tailored, and/or you wear a tighter fit it will noticeably mess up how it flares at the bottom, mess with the tension on the buttons, and possibly pull on the shoulders of the garment.
As an expert, how long do you think until we are saying the same thing about everyone flaunting their """""super unique mental illness""""" of the season?
@@tcp8946 it’s laughably ironic that people like you will cry out that Mass shootings are solely caused by lone wolf crazies and yet also mock anyone seeking help for mental health, call any efforts to help them socialism, and insist that guns stay freely available to them.
Let’s say 10% of people claiming a different _nuerotype_ (not a mental illness to be ADHD, for example).
I’d rather waste some resources on a handful of people _while ensuring the safety of everyone else_ and making them better utilized by society (a healthy mind and body are required to work at peak efficiency) than have hoards of less effective, less happy, more dangerous people going around undiagnosed, unmedicated, and self-isolated.
And make no mistake, I support gun rights. Therefor I must support mental health programs- you can have bad national mental health, you can have easy access to guns, but you can’t have both in a stable, safe society.
@@Jessie_Helms No, I don't care even a little bit.
First of all, most of those shooters are likely government experiments (James Holmes, Ted Kazinkski, etc.) And the ones who aren't NEWS FLASH: SIHT HAPPENS.
If you want mass shootings to go away (anything over 2 people killed or wounded) then get rid of gun free zones and allow people the right to defend themselves. Over 95% of mass shootings (if you don't include gang violence which accounts for almost all gun violence) happen in Gun Free Zones. These maniacs know where to go so they can get away with it. You can't control crazy. That's the definition.
While my comment was obviously referring to people like you who claim to be an advocate or victim of some nebulous "mental illness", (no one ever has a single disease these days, just """""mental illness""""), you brought up something completely irrelevant to shoehorn in your faulty politics.
The second amendment is a god given right to defend yourself. Your feelings aren't. Deal with it.
Also that literally is not what irony is lol.
Idk I don't really agree with the comparisons being made of Bluejay and Sam O' Nella. Bluejays artistic style, writing and delivery are distinct from Sam. I love both of these channels and I hope both keep uploading quality content like this 🤌
Yeah I don’t get it, either. I found Bluey before someone pointed me to Sam, so I may have a confirmation bias, but I much prefer the tone and candor of the former. Faking having a crippling disability sounds eerily like the 19th century version of lying about mental illnesses in your twitter bio...
That's exactly what I thought!
You should read the Wikipedia articles on anorexia mirabilis and “fasting girls”. This online trend is actually nothing new! People (usually impressionable teenage girls) have been imposing illnesses upon themselves for clout for centuries.
There is this subset of historical female saints who essentially would torture themselves and make themselves ill and be applauded for it, names such as Catherine of Siena, Angela of Foligno, Marie of Oignies, etc.
I think it's basically termed Munchausen Symptom, where people legit are such narcissists that they pretend to have delibilating diseases, mental or physical, to the point it becomes psychosomatic. Pathologically lying on the level that it manifests into truth because well... I dunno I can't tell you. Sadly I'm too attached to reality to understand what the true gain of such self-imposed Hell is.
Apparently the number of US kids & teenagers being taken to the doctor for tics has sharply increased.
History might not repeat itself but it often rhymes

Second “Charles” portrait is of the English Charles and his gardener.

The y is really used to substitute for the letter thorn (Þ, þ), derived from the runic alphabet of Futhark, and it's pronounced like "th", as in the word "the". The alphabet wasn't always 26 letters. It has gained and lost letters over the years

From what I recall (A story told to me by a Spanish receptionist many years ago), the reason Spanish has so many 'strange' sounds is one King has a lisp, so his court copied it and it was spread throughout society. (That's the short version).
Possibly, but Spanish has interdental sounds in all dialects. Remember "cada dia" is "catha 'thia". There is a precedent for an interdental "s". Interdentals are rare in European languages, and rarer in the rest of the world. Spanish and Greek have them. Germanic languages once had them, but only Icelandic and English retain them.
The pineapple is still a well used symbol in Charleston, SC. You'll see it everywhere in the historic district of the city.
The Chales II that you showed in portrait isn't the same as the painting with the gardener. The portrait is of Carlos II of Spain while the painting with the gardener is Charles II of England.

Actually, the pointy sabatons (armored shoe cover) worn by knights were often just hooked on over a regular sabaton and could easily be discarded. Additionally, they would only likely wear such pointy sabatons when parading.
Meh, I like the other sabaton better
I made a replica of the cover variety out of foam for a costume, and the foam wasn't bent at the right angles over my shoes, so they were sliding all over the place. I ended up taping the sabatons to my shoes and threw them away after the comic-con.

Annapolis has quite a few. I have seen them in Charleston, NYC, and New Haven as well. Never been to Boston, but I bet they have cast iron pineapples. Some places in Alexandria have cast iron pine cones as a less gaudy sign of hospitality. The cone variant was popular with Quakers and also some Catholics who were kinda like how Bono is now.

The three-button "rule" is actually just common sense - if you have to use the buttons, and just one of them, on most people the suit/blazer looks better when the middle button is used. The upper button causes a quite big gap to occur lower down in the front, and use of the lower button only may cause the upper parts to be a bit bubbly.
