  • UK to Deploy DragonFire Laser by 2027: Laser Weapon Era Underway? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
    Britain's Defence Secretary, Grant Shapps, says the country will deploy its indigenous DragonFire laser weapon by the year 2027. The UK says the DragonFire is a "World-leading" laser weapon. A number of countries are developing or testing new laser anti-drone systems. Israel has the Iron Beam. The US has the DE M-SHORAD and HELIOS. India is developing the Durga-2. Laser weapons are poised to change the face of drone warfare. Lasers are more cost-effective when dealing with cheap, kamikaze drones, like the Iranian Shahed 136. Laser anti-drone systems may turn the tide, and bring an end to the era of drone warfare.

    UK has been developing military lasers for at least 20 years to my knowledge (I used to work for the defence research organisation involved). Back then it could blow a hole in a breeze block wall, so taking out aircraft and missiles should be little problem. Once locked on to the target, there is no escaping a beam moving at close to the speed of light

  • @colorado841

    Not exactly a steal. You have to count the cost to develop the system as well making it and installing it as well as maintenance and upgrades. Then you divide that by the total number of drones shot down by it. Just using existing weapons is almost always cheaper. The cheapest way of dealing with drones is probably just using some world war III flack guns with some modifications.

      Mirrors wouldn’t make a difference, unless they fitted military grade mirrors used for lasers… at which point would make the drone not cost efficient in the slightest. Normal mirrors would melt very quickly, due to there atomic makeup not being designed to absorb that much energy, as you must remember a mirror is never 100% reflective, so if the mirror is receiving 500kw of power and it is absorbing let’s say 5% of that, that would be 25kw or energy that would be converted into heat which would then melt the mirror.

      @Pieces93 Před měsícem

      If they can invent a material that can withstand 1000’s of degrees C over the course of several seconds and still be light enough to use on drones, that would be Impressive… but think about this, even if they did find such a substance, the cost of the drones would skyrocket… they wouldn’t be cost effective anymore.

      War is very critical and bigger than life and death. Already thousands of crores are pour into. In such a case, cheaper laser shots may not matter.
      Anyway they are talking about imaginary running cost. In reality it's not true. This weapon system itself will be thousands of crores. Many parts will wear very fast. It will need to be protected by normal systems, causing hundreds of crores. This system will also be bulky. Then it's purely defensive system. Due to small range, line of sight limitation and very limited effect on material or probably mirrors or deflectors, it doesn't attracts.
      Just imagine how many seconds if it has for flying target. Probably not even a second, target will hardly come or remain in its range.
      This is just a concept. We have to see feedback from military. Send it to Ukraine or any war zone. I don't think military will want it. They will prefer pistol or a nice instead.

      @@vikasrai338 Yeah many new agencies are comparing these to missiles. That being said, missiles aren't the only defensive weapon modern warships rely on.
      Dragonfire is more likely to replace something like Phalanx CIWS, this costs $3,500 per second to fire and is basically a last ditch attempt at destroying incoming missiles with a wall of bullets. A laser can far more accurately and reliably target objects moving at speed, since you're not taking all kinds of other things into account like when firing a projectile.

      I tend to think, it's a lot of hope and all political justification wouldn't bring any real outcome. In armed forces, I believe, you may find lots of such projects where they are forced to justify that a particular thing is working when it actually not.
      We hit target with explosives, and some hit with impact i.e. huge kinetic energy. This thing is none.

    • @Benjd0
      @Benjd0 Před měsícem

      @@vikasrai338 "hmm is it going to work on tonns of weight falling directly on target."
      Why wouldn't it? It doesn't even have to completely destroy a drone or missile, just disable it, these things have a lot of sensitive equipment on board to guide them.
      At least with a laser, you can much more reliably hit a target, and even potentially a specific point on an aircraft. The question is how well can they focus the power onto as small a point as possible.
      Of course like any other military project it could go nowhere, but how would you ever advance if you never took the chance to try these things?
      We can only really speculate as we have very little knowledge of this laser and its capabilities.
      Personally I think initial iterations may not fully replace something like CIWS, but it could help lead to more powerful and refined versions.

      Hah seems you are just a hater… seems cause the brits are gonna be first to invent something game changing (yet again) and all we hear is someone like you getting all butthurt!
      Which country are you from Josue??? I’m interested to know why you have so much hate for innovation.

      Why so offended??? Do you not like innovation, or are you just salty cause the brits beat you to the punch?

    Where is Iron Beam from Israel? Propaganda is massive for several years.

    • @ZuulGatekeeper
      @ZuulGatekeeper Před 16 dny

      Iron Beam is an installation & as such it's too big to be anything but a ground static defence system. The company that makes it also does smaller mobile devices for use on ships or large vehicles but they're not in the same power range but they plan to have systems like Dragonfire operational in the next few years.
