    After installing the kitchen unit in the small barn, it was time for me to fit in the sink and the stove. I've tried my hand and plumbing for the first time!

    Goncalo, about the plumbing job, I would install a jay trap under sink to prevent or minimize (sewer gases, although not applicable here) bugs and other critters from entering your home. Good job recycling materials that otherwise would be piling up in the landfills. 👍🤩

      I had to look up what a jay trap is!
      That sounds like a very good idea, thank you for letting me know! 🙏

    Hi, I live in Portugal as well and have also installed the water and drain myself. I saw you using teflontape with the compression fittings, these fittings are supposed to be used without any tape. Just have a good look at how these fittings work, the two rubber o-rings actually seal it on the inside of the tube and the compression ring is making sure the fitting is secured onto the pipe, now when using the tape you are actually weakening the compression fit. So... just thought you should know this. Anyway, congrats with the water! it's a major upgrade, I know. 🙂

      Thank you for your comment! That's interesting, you might be right about that! I wonder if it'll give me some trouble in the long run. We'll see! Again, thank you for letting me know!

    For your drainage from the sink it is probably fine the way it is. Just sink water. But if you connect to an actual septic system you will want a trap below the sink (also called a P trap). And you then would have to have a vent pipe after the P trap. The P trap holds a small amount of water which prevents sewer gases from coming back into the house. And the vent allows the gas to escape rather than pushing the water back or bubbling through the water.. Again, it is fine for what you have now, just something for the future if you hook to a septic system. You're doing a great job on the plumbing and it will be. so much nicer to have water right there where you need it! You are very good at figuring things out that you haven't done before.

      Thank you so much for this comment, I really appreciate the knowledge and the kind words. That sounds like a great idea, I'll keep that in mind when developing the final sewage system!

    The drain water from your sinks and showers is called graywater. You can let graywater drain on to the soil or at the base of a tree or shrub. put the water to good use and keep it simple 😊

    • @goncalovalle
      @goncalovalle  Před 9 měsíci +1

      I’ve been looking into a lot of sewage treatment systems that include plants that help clear the water, maybe that would be cool!

      @@goncalovalle Typically, individual and small groups of homesteaders are using composting toilets (black water is what a toilet produces. The sink produces gray water). That's where I would encourage you to look. A composting toilet can be as simple as a 5 gallon bucket with a seat and a bucket of dry organic material (sawdust, wood chips) to cover the deposit. Try to direct deposit all urine on tree and shrub roots as fertilizer. When you need to empty the bucket you can add it to a compost pile or dig a hole where you would like to plant a tree and dump the contents into the hole. Cover with a little soil until you have a tree to plant. The word to search is "humanure". A septic tank and drain field is a big expense. What I have suggested can be done for next to no $. One more thought on gray water - you have public water - so if the drain/soak area gets muddy, pipe the water away from your building (in the area of a tree's roots) dig a small pit, fill it with loose stones and cover with landscape fabric and a few inches of soil. Plant grasses or flowers on top of the pit. With this arrangement you are watering the tree and plants every time you use the sink. 😊 These are "next step" possibilities.
