- Jim Clegg, ETTA Level 4 Qualified Coach, explains for beginners how to return a short backspin serve using the forehand flick. Jim demonstrates understanding spin, how to identifiy whether you'll need to move in to return the serve, the contact point and follow through for the shot before returning to the ready position.
Jim also demonstrates how not to play the forehand flick so you'll be able to recognise where you can go wrong with this shot.
Jim has recently retired as Preston Table Tennis Associations head coach and this will probably be the last video he agrees to make for us.
This video was filmed at our Table Tennis Centre in the St Augustine's Centre in Preston which is co owned by Newman College and Preston City Council. - Sport
This is probably the best forehand flick guide on youtube! Great job!
This is what I call proper teaching. Thanks!
Excellent video production with clear explanation & a great demonstration by Mr Jim Clegg & team 👏👏👏
One of the best tutorials. My concept are so clear now. Have been through so many tutorials but this is a gem.
ive been playing table tennis for a number of years , i recently returned to playing after an 8 years, during games i was having trouble returning the short backspin on my forehand side . i asked a couple of coaches at my club what i was doing wrong yet none of them could give me the solution . i now understand that i am lacking in point number 4 of the summary of principles . Thanks Jim
Of all the forehand flick videos I have watched, this one is the best for me. Surprisingly helpful detailed explanation and demonstration. I was able to adapt the basic principle taught here to produce a flick kill. Thank you.
Excellent video. I really appreciate the detailed explanation on what happens, what happens when you do it wrong, and what the intention is.
The slow-motion camera with the marked balls is also a great addition to understand what happens.
Thanks!
You sir, have just earned a subscriber. Really nice video, liked the fact that it explains why it is done like that and not only tells you how to do it
I've subed too...
youtube needs more great TT videos like this one.
this gentleman explains the matter very well
nice video I love it. The production is good and audio is great, which makes it easy to hear and watch; and most importantly the instructions are brilliant.
Best video.. no one..I repeat no one has explained it so well.. I will try and report back whether it helped me practically or how easy it is while practicing..
This works guys :).. tried and tested
Helping me out 10 years later. My mind clicked when I realized that returning a backspin serve like that retains the spin and becomes a top spin return.
Brilliant, well explained coaching video, thanks to Jim & team.
Wonderful teacher! Thank you, Jim!
Again, this is at the beginner's level...nicely done and clearly explained.

I really need a video like this for short topspin.
jim clegg is a very good instructor

Great explication. Thanks
you should make some more videos this is great, really helped me and others.
Excellent
Great teacher 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Amazing techniques
I'm much better at tennis so its nice to learn how to deal with all that confusing spin in table tennis and how to deal with it from this video! Like the other comments have mentioned I appreciate the explanation of how the spin is sort of borrowed from the serve! Very nice to know!
I have some questions though:
a. If I needed more control/less chance of hitting the ball over the table should I contact the ball on the paddle face closer to the handle?
b. Should I cancel the flip and go for a low push if I'm late on the receive because I've been told to take the ball at just before the peak of the bounce! Or maybe an advanced side-spin flip on the backhand? I know its harder to dig up the ball on the dip.
Excellent!!
if those kids are junior level, I am infant level
they are junior level because of their age bracket
And I'm still not born haha

Thank you Sir
nice video bro,the kids are really good
You are darn good...man :-)

Another option that you could use when receiving a short serve with backspin is to push it rather then applying topspin to the shot
Thanks
Hi Paul, Thanks for the nice video. I watched it before and watched in
again now. Do you have any video of returning short top-spin serve? That
I found difficult to return.
Thank you. I will try next time.
This video is very useful, thanks a lot
If my son Is a Beginner and loves to play offensive
What do you recommend in racket type, which he should use and the type of rubber
better use an All round racket and faster rubbers
Thanks from a beginner player
Which part of the ball touch you when use topspin serve? More bottom, middle or top ?
Thank you
Amazing video. Do you have a video regarding the advanced Forehand Flick ?
thank you. No sorry, Jim is hard to pin down for coaching videos.
grt video
Wicked vid! How does that serve compare to mine?
Intelligent analysis 👌
Good
I want to know how long the ball makes contact with the racquet at 6:40 . Is the pathway up correct or the changing racquet angle?
Done
Bethany only got a couple of minutes.
Sounds like David Bumble Lloyd
this good for heavy short backspin..but for light backspin we cannot start with open angle..need to start with straight angle
If it's on my backhand side, I usually like to push it
好的
Cqn someone help me to play with the grass, how? I play table tennis in wheelchair.
i thought you should contact the ball at the top of the bounce, or just before.
dommage qu'il n'y ait pas une version française
