I'm not surprised legends like Perez got screwed over one way or another. Nick Spencer and Hickman could've written some amazing stories but the folks in charge ended up ruining things. How unfortunate that social media has been part of the major problem too.
As a creative the story of George Perez is far too relatable. My heart breaks. When you get no support from management but they also want to ape off success. Like he just wanted to create something nice. Sigh
Fun Fact: It happened to him AGAIN when he started the New 52 Superman title, leaving after the first storyline because editorial didn’t tell him what was in canon or not, as well as Action Comics being the prequel series for the title and him having to line up with that and WOW DC can be an insane mess.
This book is so much fun, despite the mess from the book being cursed, especially if you know the surrounding mythology. Like, sure yeah the bits of Kronos can talk, he’s just bits! Tiffany did amazing on this, you can feel the love she brought and it makes George Perez’s love tangible and now I want to go back and read his run.
Alright, time to put on the "studied Classics in depth" hat for an informative comment for those curious, regarding the "Roman/Greek versions of gods." The Roman gods, (planet-names like Mars, Mercury, etc.) were originally seperate gods from the Greek gods. Early Roman sources have different myths about them (for instance, Mars was the son of JUST Juno, rather than Ares, who was the son of Zeus and Hera). But most cultures at the time were syncretistic (that is, they fused cultural and religious practices), so the Romans essentially identified their gods with the stories of similar-enough Greek gods. Some Roman gods didn't have a Greek counterpart (like Ianus and Terminus), and likewise, some Greek gods didn't have a Roman counterpart (like Apollo). You'll actually see the Romans do this as they spread through Celtic territory, fusing gods like Minerva with Sulis, a British goddess of healing and wisdom, or fusing Mars with Ocelus, a Celtic god of protection. So while, eventually, it became "Mars = Ares," that was certainly not how things were when the Romans and Greeks (specifically the ones who had colonized southern Italy) made contact. They had seperate-but-similar-enough pantheons that they worshipped and eventually matched equivalents up. As for the Hercules/Hippolyta thing, it's worth noting that their history is a reference to the mythological labors of Herakles, one of which was to steal Hippolyta's girdle. Antiope also factors into that myth, since Theseus was with Herakles and he kidnapped Antiope while they were on Themiscyra. 34:00 In case anyone's curious, the mythological sons of Vulcan were Philammon, Cecrops, Cacus, Erichthonius, Corynetes, Cercyon, Philottus, and Spinther 38:30 A reference to the Odyssey in which Circe turns Odysseus' men into pigs.
So, I believe they have done all 80s and 90s events of DC except for Eclipso, Genesis, One Million and Day of Judgment (they have done: Crisis, Legends, Millenium, Invasion, War of the Gods, Armageddon 2001, Bloodlines, Zero hours, Underworld Unleashed and Final Night).
Wow, this episode of Back Issues had everything. It was hilarious, insightful and ultimately told a tragic behind the scenes story. Poor George Perez. All he ever wanted was to do right by a great character, Wonder Woman. Great episode and great work, Tiffany.
As a kid, I remember seeing Armageddon 2001 annuals everywhere; but I could never find War of the Gods #2. It definitely wasn't their highest priority.
I love your description of Pariah. "He shows up and cries." Ha ha!! Middle school me thought he was cool because when he showed up, you automatically felt more intense about the bad stuff that was about to happen. It felt so epic. But adult me kind of finds him boring.
I have a few friends that actually worship the greek gods now. I have always loved Wonder Woman, her creation and myth is one of the coolest and different. So many Heroes are created out trauma but Diana was created out of love. DC just has such a hard time doing events with her when hers should be the easiest.
Ya its greak myths conflict happens all the time. Here is one the Faiths show up this guy will do something bad kill him Wonder woman but he hasn't done anything wrong yet Other hero but he will soon fight. The faiths yes we planed all this. Or hera wants to kill the sons zeus had out of wed lock. The Titans come back Zeus gets scard heros like superman will surpase him. Someone wants to take the throne of zeus
Very topical with "Trial of the Amazons" and pariah in "Infinite Frontier" and "Justice League Incarnate" and presumably "Dark Crisis" both happening right now.
Funny that this is so connected to/screwed by Armageddon 2001, since both Waverider & Pariah have the same "I just really, really, REALLY hate my family" backstory.
"Bwaaah! Its my fault! My poor family! I'm the saddest man alive!" Hey Pariah, you could move between Universes right? Yeah how about you go over to the Marvel Universe and talk to a guy named Peter Parker. He might be able to teach you a thing or two about carrying guilt without being THE WORST
Great episode! Enjoyed the history of the book and George Perez deserves a medal for even getting it out with all that stuff going on. I really wish we were able to see his original vision for the story, because it sounds like there was something there it just got muddled in all the craziness.
Look at how much George Perez loved Wonder woman. He walked away from drawing The Infinity gauntlet, one Marvel's most famous stories, because he wanted to do something special for Wonder woman. I love George Perez
I really liked this episode. Tiffany did a great job explaining the behind the scenes of this story. This makes me think that if DC had put their faith and effort into letting Perez just tell this story, it might be hailed as an achievement rather than a mess that Perez had to pretty much had to handle by himself.
This was fascinating to learn about this from Perez’ perspective too. It certainly explains a lot. Thank you guys for making such great content. You all get better and better each time. It’s a real comfort to continue watching all these years. Thank you!
I’ve read some the beginning of George Prez’s Wonder Woman run and really loved what I read. It’s upsetting to learn what happened at the end of his run. I’m currently enjoying Trial of The Amazons and most of lead up too (Wonder Girl and Nubia & the Amazons). I’m glad that DC is putting some faith in Wonder Woman stories. Great episode y’all!!!
Thank you for this review of the story. This came out in the heyday of my buying single issues, and I remember being very confused issue to issue. Now that I finally have the context, I'm only mildly confused. Also, YAY there's an omnibus. I hope one day you cover the DC Crossover Genesis.

Do you have a link to the WW volumes she mentioned
Whenever Sal or Tiff start an episode with a deep breath and then "alright" or "okay", you know we're in for a doozy of a book
Hell yeah we are, ain’t it great🤣
This is such a ComicPop trope, I love it.
Sal: George Perez loves Wonder Woman so much, he did an event that we will never cover on this show.
Tiffany: So, I took this as a challenge…
You know it’s a complicated book when Sal has to bring in Tiffany, the queen of explaining, to explain a book… and even she finds it hard lol
*Red Ghost shows up to Tiffany’s psyche with chocolates and flowers*
*opens door and sees Pariah is the new character she despises the most, living there, rent-free*
*Red Ghost drops flowers and chocolates onto floor:* “I thought what we had was speciaaaaaaaaal!”
Why do you like all the things I like?
I adore Tiff episodes because it’s almost like a history lesson through the lens of the creators.
I love when Sal and Tiffany go in depth about the background to these stories, theyre the best episodes of back issues by far imo
Clearly, Tiffany's ideal DC and Marvel Crossover is Pariah vs. Red Ghost
@@armintamzarian8222 spiderman symbiote first appearance

You just made me want a Hickman Wonder Woman series. Another reminder that we don't live in the best possible timeline.
Like Sal said a while back in the One More Day backissues, there’s no higher power in comics than editorial
@@TheGreatDevlin What a true shame Hickman hasn't joined DC for a few books. I bet he'd write some interesting Justice League or JSA stuff.
