    My Favorite Version of Wonder-Woman has got to be from the Justice League and JLU cartoons, because the amount of love and care the character was written with was so lovely to watch. Wonder Woman in those cartoons was dignified, kind, sophisticated, and strong but not overtly angry. Her design was great too, as she wasn't skinny or grossly muscular but looked like a strong healthy woman (plus Wonder Woman and Batman being an Item was the greatest and coolest thing no one ever thought about till Bruce Timm came along)

    You're not quite getting what Mala's gripe with Diana is.
    She's not just angry that Diana took her sweet ride, she's angry because for thousands of years, she's been the champion. And as the strongest fighter, she gets to sleep with the princess.
    She's pissed because the princess, her trophy, who is supposed to submit to her, is showing independence, taking her other status symbol, and running off with a man.
    Mala is a perversion of Marston's "Loving Submission" philosophy. She doesn't understand that the submission has to be given from a place of love and trust, not taken by force every year.

      Just to clarify. The black man is not Diana's boyfriend
      "We never play him as Wonder Woman’s ‘boyfriend’. He himself considers this immortal Princess ‘out of my league’, and she has no context for romance with a mortal man. They appear to be good friends.
      We almost showed Steve’s ordinary human fiancee in Volume 2 but preferred to leave his sexuality undisclosed. He’s Diana’s tough, dependable pal and that’s all he needs to be." - Grant Morrison the writer

    That's one thing I love about Yanick Paquette's art. the way he designs panels to kind of fit the time/events happening in the comic. like In his Swamp Thing run with Scott Snyder where vines are in between the panels , then bones and skulls when you see zombies and the story gets grimmer

    I've always thought Wonder Woman's costume is extremely practical. Since she virtually invincible, wearing "armour" is like wearing heavy tissue paper, there's absolutely no reason to wear any armour except for keeping her modesty.
    And if you want to balance modesty with mobility, covering her torso and exposing her limbs provide her with the maximum amount of mobility while keeping her body covered.
    There's absolutely no reason for her to wear anything more into battle.

    Having read this at the same time as I read "The Secret Origin of Wonder Woman," it's cool to see how deeply Morrison tapped into the original mythos/intentions for the character. It's not perfect, but it's traditional, which is cool.

    Rape in ancient Greece & Rome was very ambiguous meaning, not just focusing on sexual assault but could be considered something like theft, abduction and kidnapping *sometimes* with the context of committing a sexual encounter. So all the times you hear about rape in ancient Greek literature don't always think of the modern idea of the word.
    Marston was just a kinky guy, the bracelets were a reference to his lover Olive, who he and his wife(who knew and gave her permission) lived with. They were open to doing bondage.

      SuperNerdGavin not quite. In the original version, the Amazons were kind, loving, and peaceful. Like the female version of the Air Nomads on Avatar the Last Airbender (before they became more warlike). In this story, Morrison made the Amazons completely unlikable and prejudice. They are supposed to believe in love and equality, not judge other women by how they look. He also took away her clay origin and made her the daughter of Hercules, her mom's rapist.

  • @briannabrickey1772
    @briannabrickey1772 Před 4 lety +11

    As a lifelong Wonder Woman fan, I hated this story. I loved the art, the way the island looked, and that he had them be advanced in technology, but it pissed me off that he turned the Amazons into villains. They are supposed to be a loving family for her, instead he made them way more like the New 52 version that none of the Wondy fans like. Hippolyta was amazing in Post Crisis, but he made her completely unlikable. It also pissed me off that he made Hercules her father. Hercules, Hippolyta's rapist! What a disgrace. Gail Simone showed how bad that would be in one of her issues. I also despised the way he portrayed Diana. He doesn't understand her character at all. Perez had a great origin story for the Amazons and great Amazon characters, while Rucka was able to get the complexities of her character - the warrior and the healer. The live action movie portrayed her complexities perfectly, Morrison didn't. After his comments on the BVS trailer about him not liking the warrior side of the character, I was afraid this would suck, but I didn't think he would fuck her up this bad. He said he was bringing the character back to her roots, but that's kind of bullshit. All he brought back was the Amazon tech, the kangas, and the weird bondage, but he ruined almost everything else. In the original version, the Amazons were kind, loving, and peaceful. Like the female version of the Air Nomads on Avatar the Last Airbender (before they became more warlike in the Post Crisis reboot). In this story, Morrison made the Amazons completely unlikable and prejudice. They are supposed to believe in love and equality, not judge other women by how they look. He also took away her clay origin.

    FYI: the Fates did not share an eye. There were three: Clothos spun the thread of life, Lachesis measured it and Atropos cut it. The three women who shared an eye were the Graeae; they shared an eye and a tooth. We meet them not with Heracles but with Perseus, who goes to them to learn the secret of where Medusa lives and how to get there.

    I really liked the story (big Grant Morrison fan so it would be kind of a given). But what I really care about is how the story is told and it's structure not if it's too feminist or not feminist enough. To be completely honest I could care less about all of that, a good story is a good story and this is one of the better modern Wonder Woman stories I've read in a while. The art is beautiful and I was never confused by the panel layouts. I also prefer this interpretation of the Amazons as I was never a fan of them being portrayed as blood drunk lunatics. And as everyone has pointed out below me, Beth is related to Etta Candy who is part of WW's lore. As for the bondage, Marston, as far as what I got out of the stuff I've read about him seems to have been into bondage play with his wife and their mutual lover (which is fine) so that's why the Amazons like to tie people up including each other. It's just a fetish.
    Oh and pants would be more restrictive in battle so I'm glad they kept to the classic look.

    • @agashi336
      @agashi336 Před 8 lety +5

      Pants might be more restrictive, but tights are not. Hence why nearly every male superhero wears them. If they're good enough for dudes, I don't see why they can't be good enough for women, but meh.... Fine, whatever. I agree with everything else you said.
      As a woman, I also think that comics about female characters tend to be so concerned with whether or not the work is feminist that they forget to tell a good, engaging story FIRST. This comic succeeds on that level, so overall, I enjoyed it. :)

      This was easily one of the worst modern Wonder Woman comics to ever existed. Grant Morrison thinks he gets Wonder Woman when he just doesn’t, he’s just repeating out of context golden age tropes without any real story, commentary, updating or anything new to add. And yanick paquette’s art, while obviously not bad and often stunning and imaginative, too often depicts the Amazons as overly posed and constantly pouting. All the characters, especially the Amazons, feel more like tropes and mouthpieces for him to repeat golden age stuff through rather than actual people. Even in George Pérez where they all talk in a rather convoluted and old fashioned way, they at least still feel human. It’s a shame because a story like this, a modern take on golden age Wonder Woman, could’ve really been something. This is just a male fantasy more than anything else.

  • @8mad
    @8mad Před 7 lety +28

    As a huge Wonder Woman fan (she being my favorite superhero) I sort of like and hate this story. The art work is fabulous I agree the gorgon is amazing, I love that Grant Morrison brought back the purple rays and the kangaroos which is hysterical. The culture looks Grecian-futuristic which is cool and Etta Candy is kind of funny (?). However, to me Morrison doesn't get Diana. The amazons are assholes not the loving and peaceful warriors I love they honestly remind me more of the Bana or like their New 52, Hippolyta is just a man hater who takes things WAY too far, Diana walked around pompous acting all better in man world and almost like a defiant teenager on Themyscira, instead of a person of compassion, justice, and humbled royalty with a unity with her sisters who helped raise her. Plus there was hardly a story for me here. Also nit-pick, I HATE Wonder Woman wasn't molded from clay and has a father.
    I will prefer George Perez's origin in God's and Mortals, though Greg Rucka my favorite Wonder Woman writer (and was supposed to write WW Earth One) is doing some great things that I love in DC Rebirth. Also, Marguerite Bennett's DC Bombshells WW origin is also pretty cool.

    It would be nice if there was ever a version of Paradise Island that was like Y - The Last Man. Something that more realistically showed a place where it was nothing but women, warrior women at that.....so a violent back-stabbing hellhole.

    i never understood the pants debate with wonder woman. She is basically a mix of an ancient spartan and a dominatrix, with a side of a philosopher. male pro wrestlers just wear trunks (underwear). wrestling has its roots in greece. why wouldn't she have trunks? as to the bondage, marston was all about female domination. he felt women would rule the world, and that men would be happier in "loving submission." chains also have roots in the suffrage movement, which martson was apart of, and he was adamant that whenever WW was tied up, it was portayed as bad, but WW tying up a man was good. marston's view on sex was obviously different in that he and his wife shared a mistress. if you ever want to learn about her author's creative process and the characters feminist roots, read "the secret history of wonder woman," by jill lepore. its a fascinating read. also, beth is based on etta candy, a classic golden age character who was basically wonder woman's sidekick. I felt it was a positive interpritation. she is a woman who is not obssessed with being a supermodel, but van still help WW save the day.

    • @ssgsorrels
      @ssgsorrels Před 8 lety +1

      ***** it still appropriate. She is the same basic character she always was, and her roots are still greek, not to mention she knows wrestling. Also, it feels like we are missing one of the messages of wonder woman if we demonize the female form

    • @ssgsorrels
      @ssgsorrels Před 8 lety +1

      ***** very few wrestlers (male wrestlers) wear pants. the ones that do are attempting to have their costume stand out. of the trinity, superman and batman have pants. wonder woman having trunks makes her stand out. and yeah, they used to wrestle nude. so her wearing trunks is already conservative. besides, are you telling me starfire or powergirl doesnt have even more revealing costumes? no one complains about them anymore, but WW still needs pants for some reason. what about harley quinns corset and fetish gear in the arkham games? zatanna and black canary with their fishnet stockings? face it, wonder woman wears more clothes than lot of teenage girls and women in the real world. I've seen plenty of women in boyshorts and a tube top. thats way more revealing than WW's costume.It makes sense for her culture, it make sense from a historical perspective, it makes her stand out, and i still say you are demonizing her body for no good reason, which I'm pretty sure the whole "this is my body and I'm proud of it," message of old school feminism would rally against.

      @ssgsorrels Před 8 lety +1

    I thought the kink aspect of Wonder Woman was to do with her creator's belief in female supremacy and that he was a 'slave' to his wife and her lover? He was trying to encourage a world where women rule and men served.

    Wow Grant, Just wow. Idk how to feel about this. I hope yall do another WW story though since she doesnt get as much love as I feel she deserves. The Hiketia is a good WW story with some Batman in it too. I believe is was a Greg Rucka book but dont quote me on that one. The current Legend of Wonder Woman series is on issue #6 out of 9 and it does a great job of retelling her origin and weaving in some other DC characters. It also has a MUCH BETTER BODY POSITIVE CHARACTER in Etta Candy than this book's Beth Candy. Just a suggestion though. I really enjoyed this back issues though like I do all the other ones. Keep up the good work everybody!

    My interpretation of the depiction of Themyscira and especially the scene of the wine/water pouring over another woman to be indicative of how their society has grown so stale and monotonous due to the same couple hundred people being around for 3000 years that they have lost touch of the concept of social morays or shame and that they just engage in pleasurable acts. It became normalized within their secluded and immortal culture to the point it became accepted behavior. I take it less as a sexist take and more of an evidence of why Diana was so excited to see the rest of the world.

It's a 60 page graphic novel that is drawn by Romita JR and written by Miller. It's supposed to explore how Jason Todd was killed by the Joker and why Batman quit. Though it's not a needed story, I'm still pumped for it. Miller said in an IGN interview he was a lot more hands on in the story so hopefully it's off the wall insane!

    The one thing I notice about female complaints towards female characters is that they aren't portrayed "manly" enough. Writers get flak for putting any femininity into the character. They really just want a male character but in a female body but doesn't that kinda take away from the whole point of having women in comics? It's really just the aesthetic appeal rather than the writing behind it. you really just want superman but you want him to look like a girl but with a key difference.
    There's this constant need to show dominance over male characters. Male characters will often fall in love with female characters or rescue female characters but they don't really show dominance over them in the sense that female characters often do. Like the scene in the book that Sal described where she's picking off these male police officers and women are smiling about it. That makes no sense to me. Yah she's showing her dominance over a force but to smile at it is kinda weird. Just because she's a women doesn't mean she's good. She's obviously a possible threat that we wouldn't be able to stop. We the readers know she isn't but they don't and for the female characters to idealize her just because she's a strong independent women is kinda stupid.
    Writers need to go beyond the scope the feminist ideology of what women are and kinda go off their own experiences. Go beyond dominance and independence and look at every day moral decision and life lessons. When there's repetition of preachy feminist nonsense it just gets boring and it's not relatable at all and it really doesn't teach young women anything about how to be women other than to be dominant and independent which is weird as men are taught through fiction to see themselves on the same level as those around them and to rely on them when they need them. If a woman in a comic book is ever shown to need help from anybody, especially a man, it's considered sexist. I just can't wrap my head around it, honestly
