@@ShusukeAmagaiBakoto He did.
Gotta say, the writing was at the top of its game with this one. Naming the main bad guy "ZumBADo"? *chef's kiss*
It's really rare to see your comments being this under the radar
The best description I’ve ever heard of for Constantine: “He’s not goth, he’s just an asshole.” Thank you Ben.
Bendis is a conundrum for me! He's capable of writing brilliance and I genuinely think he writes characters of colour from a really positive place as I think he wants his children to have heroes they can look up to, which enamours me to him but then he decides to take a massive dump on continuity and write pulpy mid tier storylines which take away his goodwill in the wider comic community.
I thank comicpop for covering this though as I don't think I'd have seen it anywhere else.
I feel you 100 on this. Bendis be having great ideas and I loved the introduction of Miles Morales as Ultimate Spider-Man was my favorite part of that verse but he dropped the ball with Riri and no one's continuity is safe from him. Like did we really need a shadowy council and a bad actor to be why Krypton was destroyed?
Hell at least the old reason of there being a civil war with one group deciding to use a doomsday device that failed but triggered a slow but catastrophic instability of the core placed it on the Kryptonians.
Personally I think that's why it end up bad, It isn't genuine. Just write something GOOD don't try to appeal to your children we don't even know if they even like comics. It feels like an excuse for him to write something mid to bad then he jumps ship and uses that excuse as a shield from criticism. DC/WB went hard with Naomi and it all flopped
Ethan not believing Ben would get superpowers at any point of his life is what I call friendship goals
I love Sal giving Jamal Campbell a shoutout, his art in Far Sector is absolutely incredible, and I think, even better than his Naomi work.
I hope that we get to see a back issues of Far Sector someday! :o
Good LORD is his artwork good in Far Sector lol
The first time I saw his art it was in an issue of Supergirl and HOLY SHIT it was incredible. Has he done some other major books at all?
Campbell is a modern master! It’s insane how good he is!
And in another case of Bendis being Bendis, meaning I can’t be bothered to actually READ any continuity aside from my own, he seems to forget that Adam Strange and his Rannian wife have a baby girl, thus throwing that whole Rann/Earthers can’t mate thing straight out the window. Sigh. Bendis is a chore.
@@jonathansoko1085 what does that have to do with Diversity?
@Ellisdv8 I was just thinking that when I saw the video. I was like “what about Adam Stranges interplanetary family?!” lol. I guess I’m truly a geek if I fact check others on Adam Strange.
I’ll be honest, I completely forgot about her up until she was brought in for Bendis’s Justice League run.
11:59 Bendis is a big Mongul fan apparently.
And even then he can hardly keep it consistent, showing him bodied without breaking a sweat by Superman only to then be able to take him and the United Planets on and seemingly have the upper-hand
It's ironic, because Mongul's also the big bad of the current Action Comics run, written by Philip Kennedy Johnson, and he's infinitely more complex and intimidating in that series than he was when Bendis was writing him.
"You could be you as a crocodile" is the best phrase and requires no context whatsoever.
5:59 Geoff Johns finger guns without even knowing
The slightly delayed Geoff Johns finger guns 😂
I can't believe I watched an 1 hour 29 minute video about Naomi, and my takeaway was "Wow, I should really read Far Sector" lol
You guys need to sing the jingle at the end more often. That was great.
I watch older back issues more than I watch any other tv, including streaming. I'm only halfway through s2 of witcher, I never finished Rise of Skywalker or Book of Boba, and I don't know what about ComicPOP [and RLM the only other youtubers i watch more than tv] makes it so constant in enjoyability. my best guess is i discovered both when I was getting off hard drugs, which cause anhedonia or lack of pleasure, and when experiencing a lack of enjoyment for all the movies and tv i used to enjoy, comicPOP was there to say, "we can entertain you despite your stupid brain making things unenjoyable" and for that I will be forever grateful to you wonderful people
I feel like the secret pitch that you made during the episode - about how everything around Naomi should be crazy superhero stuff, and everybody she knows is just some kind of castoff from another universe or an alien race, but she's just a normal human trying to find something that makes her special - would make for a much more entertaining story. Though I guess that would be more interesting to the experienced comic readers than the younger audience they were shooting for with... whatever Naomi ended up being.
Which is also weird now that I think about it, because I have a feeling part of the reason her backstory is so convoluted is probably just because Bendis and / or Walker didn't want readers familiar with the DCU to figure out her deal early and string those readers along with the mystery. Kind of trying to appeal to both audiences and then just pleasing neither, really.
Oh my god, Sal referenced that art of Lois being weirded out by Superman's privates. I remember seeing that on Deviantart once.
Congrats on 100K guys!! Keep up the awesome work!
LMFAOO the fact that Sal explained the whole origin exposition in just a couple of sentence when the book took half an issue and a full blown novel-like explanation to do it 💀
The Lex Complex… that should be the title for an event. Your welcome DC
I don't think Bendis understands how the ozone layer works...
Naomi's parents not being able to conceive is actually funny when a major plot point in Adam stranges origin is that ranns needed earthlings to repopulate their planet lmao
These guys make this book sounds easy more interesting than it probably was. Good job
A lot of new comics are backdoor movie/TV pitches, I guess the most we can hope for are that they're well written and don't abuse continuity
What a sad statement for the comic book industry
20:00
“Oh my god, it’s that singer from that one super obscure brit punk band in the 70s!”
The writing here is like a parody of itself... With wonderful art.
Hey just came from a blue superman vid it was an absolute blast
After reading comics for so long I think I’ve noticed all of Bendis “quirks”:
-in any team book, you can bet there will be a scene of them eating Chinese food and or pizza
-someone on said team will be joking about how they nearly are on the verge of tears or how they really gotta pee
-in a solo book there will be a parental figure that gets strangely aggressive at the drop of a hat
-has someone explain how said character is awesome without him showing us how that works
Whenever he creates a character I typically wait for another writer to take a shot at them as they will take whatever foundation Bendis laid (no matter how small) and then do something with it.
The last few characters he created were blank slates with bland or little-to-no personality but that somehow every supporting character present said were “perfect” or “flawless”. Guess it was too much to actually show them doing something to merit that, but yeah, other writers typically are the ones to make them work
@@rabl3535 that was my biggest problem with Riri
Bendis really gave Naomi the Roman Reigns push... It's just so blatant...
Someone has to do fan art of her doing the Reigns arm wanking thing ✊🏾
It's the same energy of somebody whom isn't over with people getting a wild push and a lot of people do not like it.
I have a proposal, if Ben has read Robert Kirkman’s Firepower, which I think would be right up his alley, I’d love to see him host a back issues
Edit: also COMIC POP TO 100k LETS GO BABYYYYYYY
HELL YES!!!! fire power is actually one of my favorite comic series ever! :)
1:14:08 C'mon Sal, you robbed me of Ethan's reaction! I would like to see that whole bit of the father being tactitian because gamer as a short
I love it when you do Bendis books, they're either great or horrible or in that in-between that can only be called the honey bendis don't give a fuck realm lol. Regardless, a wonderful episode indeed
I just read every issue of Bendis' Young Justice run, which had Naomi in it. The original Peter David series is one of my favorites of all time, and I love the animated series. I have no clue what her powers are other than flight and glowing. And she has adoptive parents. Literally knew nothing else about her from all those issues.
I don't think Bendis does either. She's just generically 'super powerful' and like you said 'glows'. But that's a Bendis trope in it's own 'Here's this idea....w-why doesn't anyone else want to develop it?!?!"
bendis’ Young Justice, man that’s rough
“His name is D?”
“Yes.”
“Is that a first name? What’s his full proper name!?”
“D… DEEZ NUTS!!”
GOT EM!
Your idea of her not having powers is really funny tbh
I've listened to Kevin Smith's Superman story so much that when I hear "Thanagarian", i automatically think of giant spiders. 🤣
Jamal Campbell’s artwork is the only reason to pick up the book lol. I felt letdown because we learn nothing about who Naomi is because Bendis just wants to build out a supporting cast and focus on the space mystery aspect. Congrats on 100k subs!!
Wait but Adam strange has a daughter with Alana, who's from Rann.
I gotta throw the flag at the whole human/rann non hybrid thing. Doesn't Adam Strange have a family with a Rann woman? Like the queen of Rann even?
Yes. The next question is: Does Bendis care? The answer is no.
Wow, not to be that guy, but I think this is the first time I've ever actually been the first comment on a video. Love you guys by the way.
Gasp! Foiled again!
Hi Black nerd and avid comic book fan here. Miles was introduced perfectly and integrated well into main 616. Riri was introduced in Civil War 2 and is a mainstay of the teen team that isn’t but wants to be Young Avengers. I think these things matter in how both characters are received 😂
True. I absolutely agree. Although, I do think if they had to replace Iron Man, James Rhodes has a brilliant daughter. She could have easily been that character. She would be a brilliant, already established legacy character. Especially after CW II. It would make a lot of sense.
@@nikcantsnipe “but I don’t own that character, so I wouldn’t get royalties from the Rhodes’ Daughter Show.” - Bendis
@@nikcantsnipe your right. An established character taking on a legacy role for another character out of commission temporarily would have been a much better recieved way to inject new energy to a series while still respecting its roots.... However if you do that then you don't get paid whenever that character has to be put in the books now so obviously you can't do that.
@@SpiralSine6 Seems legit. With Naomi, other than the parent bit, I really didn't feel any heart in this run.
Miles really earned his place in Ultimate Spider-Man and has a connection with Peter, plus the readers didn't lose 616 Peter. Riri appeared from nowhere and had no connection with Tony so it felt jarring and out of place when she was supposed to replace him. Replacing a beloved character with someone totally new is alwasys going to be a tricky thing to do well.
Ethan busting up when Sal reveals that Naomi's father was _a videogame developer_ fucking killed me! 😂😂😂😂
Oh, Bendis... My God.🖕
Oh god... hey i have a game, take a shot everytime Sal say's "I'm special!" During this episode.
These videos have been getting me through a very stressful time, appreciate the frequent uploads
Bendis is a real mixed bag for me. On the one hand, I love that he tries to write stuff for his kids to relate to, it's super wholesome like y'all said, and it's something we need more of.
On the other hand, he hasn't written anything good since 1610 Peter Parker was killed off 11 years ago. He *can* write good stories, I've seen him do it. But he hasn't in a very long time. So he just really annoys me
While the ending is meh. I thought his Infamous Iron-Man run was good.
@@TheCosmicFailure Infamous Iron Man definitely had some cool moments, I'll give you that
Batman Universe was fantastic which is his only good DC work and the Miles stories were good until right after Ultimate Spider-Man 200. The Venom War was awesome along with that subsequent arc. Ultimate Cloak and Dagger with their origin was great in a very small amount of time in an issue he wrote. Let’s not be so hyperbolic now.
I think he may be burned out, been working in comics for what, 30 years, can only imagine the kind of mental fatigue that'd cause after a certain point.
@@someonewhocommentsonyoutub3779 He might be now, but he's been like this for about 15+ years in my opinion, and he didn't really take off until Ultimate Spider-Man, so I imagine the stress didn't really begin until that took off like it did.
Love it!
"Here's a number to a therapist" I laughed out loud!
What a mess. This feels like one of those 90's events that sometimes are covered in Back Issues where like stuff just happens. There's no reason to it, just stuff is there and it happens and it doesn't serve the story in anyway or relate to any thematic element. Like could you imagine if Superman was not only the last son of Krypton but was also adopted by two separate aliens that had nothing to do with each other or with Krypton and they lived in a town with other Aliens. It's just a mess to even listen to.
lol oh man, the snark on this is just too good.
If Rannians and humans can't have kids, then where did Adam Strange's daughter come from
Don't ask that question. They will provide an answer that no-one but an incredibly small, niche fetish of sexual deviants will like.
Bendis doesn’t know or care about that. He’s trying to make his own story.
40:21 Ben, being the comedic legend he is, expertly and ironically in one phrase demonstrates just how forgettable & terrible Invasion was by calling it DOMINATION! Lol #Legend 🤣❤️👍🏾
Oh boy, here we go
Sal doing the cat noise was just hilarious! So unexpected
45:47 Wonder Comics! Ya know… FOR KIDS!! 🤣😜
You guys singing the outro was cute
Amethyst is just DCs clone of Illyana Rasputin. I didn’t think Illyana would have a clone lol. But hey O.G Amethyst was interesting and it delve into the Lords of Order and Chaos so that’s something.
I love how you guys find it hard to believe that any of us wouldn't abandon an intergalactic war for a hot goth gf. That's literally the most relatable thing I've ever seen in a comic book
That was a fantastic Korg impression
Man, Naomi loves Superman? She must hate Bendis.
Congrats on 100k guys you earned it.
Usually my favorite episodes are ones about characters and stories I have no idea or context about. We're in for a ride.
Funny enough coming from someone who actually is adopted this is the most I've ever heard the word adopted used within the span of 20 minutes
Is this their first 100K Back Issues. If so, yeah that’s about right.

Congrats on hitting the 100k sub milestone! Been watching you for 2 years now.
Bendis named his bad guy Zumbado? did he really call his bad guy SOME BAD OH?
He is the man that created one of the worst Superman villains in a long time and named it after the doctor that saved his life as a thank you! Good ol ROGOL’ ZAR! I can only imagine his doctors reaction! Lmao!
@@langleymneely oooh that's his name, i thought it was robo-tsar or somr shit lol
I thought it was a reference to Zimbardo, the professor who conducted the Stanford Prison Experiment, is obsessed with "evil" as a psychological condition, & looks like Satan. I think Bendis also created Zsasz who is also named after a psychologist
I sincerely hope I'm the lamest version of myself in the multiverse and the multiversal versions of me are just living their best lives or unlives.

1:15:40 "I have to go. My planet needs me."
Ethan's reaction to an entire issue of backstory
Seems like DC has become the Netflix of the comic book world. Green light everything and then cancel it hard and fast.
See I was hoping Naomi wouldn't get powers, but became like a skilled meta-human investigator. Seriously how cool would it have been if Dee trained Naomi to fight like a Thanagarian while her dad taught her how to use Rannian tech. Her book would have a Gravity Falls vibe with weird meta-human stuff happening in the town, with Naomi being the one to investigate and put a stop to it. Her friends get tangled up in the adventures, she could team up with other heroes passing through, just gradually becoming apart of the DC universe from her small town.
Imagine a scene where Clark Kent comes to town to write a story about an earlier adventure, and runs into Naomi in the diner. Naomi could be a fan of Clark's work while Clark secretly knows what Naomi's been up to and tells her she's a smart kid.
100k guys!!! CONGRATS
Bendis should retire...
Or at least make his own indie group and write about any of his own craziness, without any of his usual "demands"
I don't know much about the character but I'm glad she exists. I have a friend who relates to her so much and I'm glad he has that.
Why is she getting a show??
@@ShawnWeeded510 It’s 2022 and there’s currently a show going on that stars Peacemaker, any comic character can have a project now lmao.
@@superheroedits1315 regardless of how obscure Peacemaker is it makes ense because he was in arguably one of the best comic book films ever made imo so itade sense that one of the stars would get a spinoff. Naomi just seems random🤷🏾♂️.
@@ShawnWeeded510 There’s many factors to it, I think. Bendis wanted to get into movies and TV with Marvel, but couldn’t. DC is giving him a chance, apparently. There’s also the fact that DC most likely wants to make more YA and teen shows to compete with Marvel, since they’re doing stuff like Ms. Marvel and Moongirl. They’re not investing as much, but since Naomi is a story that doesn’t require much of a budget, they’re making it to see if it works out.
@@ShawnWeeded510 Could say the same about GOTG & Eternals

I'd like to request that every episode end with you guys... singing(?) the theme.
Not to be that guy, I don't get Naomi. Is it supposed to be a power fantasy? It seems like a bit of power wish fulfillment. She's like got everything going. Everything's is well, "barely an inconvenience". This was so underdeveloped and just made for TV.
It kind of annoys me that this is going to come out before any other developed poc heroes that have had development for decades. But sure, Bendis. Do your thing. They really don't want to give his widow some money and bring Static in, do they?

I mean… Bendis made both her and Riri so his adoptive daughter could have role models to look up to. As sweet as that is, it doesn’t make for a good story. Naomi is all right, but she’s very obviously just Bendis trying to do Riri or Miles again.
Yeesh, this story is no bueno. It makes sense that BMB wanted to write something for his kids, but this book feels like it was written for ONLY his kids to read. I was half expecting at 1:14:05 for Sal to say "her mother was a teacher and her father was an award-winning comic book writer who totally also made movies and stuff"
That's why it's so bad, he's trying to hard to appeal to people that might not even care really. Then he does it so poorly over and over it's like a hasbeen trying to get their spark back yet they keep doing the same thing that didn't work.

I completely forgot the DC universe app was a thing holycrap. How hard did it fail? Also this feels like when you guys did the Jubilee book a few years ago
They split the content. The tv shows and movies were moved to HBO Max. The comics stayed and they called it DC Universe Infinite
I did too and have now been reminded of my comment on the Streaming Service honest trailer

I'm loving the DC Infinite app. They overhauled it to get all new issues six month after they're released. I'm reading all my comics that way instead of buying physical.
