Fun Fact
For those who didn't notice, Carol Danvers wasn't there at Marvel's last moments, in story reason was that she was having deep space adventures at the time and the message just didn't reach her.
Carol was one of Marvel's first, and dearest human friends on earth next to Rick, even her having romantic feelings for him. She only knew about his death like a year later (real) time when she came back to earth and hearing it in passing the poor girl ( I think it was in a Avenger or X title). If I remember correctly, Wonder Man was having a conversation with someone which led to him remembering Marvel's death Which Carol was in ear shot of.
Carol was like "What did you say", WM: "Wait you didn't know? I thought you knew? He died a year ago". I like her reaction to the news, she starts asking who could have done it, thinking it was one of his enemies who did him in, she was ready for blood until WM finally tells her it was cancer. Carol was shocked like Spider-man was when it was cancer of all things that killed him. She got even more depress when she was told that nearly everyone in the super community was there during his final moments but not her, one of his best friends.
Okay I know this comment is 5 years old at this point but I just read the story, and it's even worse: Carol joins a poker game with other superheroes and at one point the new Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau) drops in and Carol's like "whoa hang on did Mar-Vell approve you using that name?" and then she learns the truth (much in the way you described).
The moment Sal nails the question Ethan asked as a joke and Ethan is incredulous may be my new all-time favorite ComicPOP moment.
This story legitimately hits like a truck, it's beautifully done.
JoJo Talks Too Much I think I know who you are
The mighty averages vol 1 decision on your channel
To true
I love how quick Sal is to answer the exact issue of Avengers, yet when Ethan asks about “what kind of cancer?” Sal is dead silent.
Oh my god. For decades, comic book readers have known that Captain Marvel gets cancer. _But we've never known what kind._ I always assumed it was the, y'know, all-over kind.
I assumed it was the space kind.
Space Cancer is the third worst kind of cancer.
same here
Just Some Guy with a Mustache space cancer
I assumed colon cancer. Just... 'cause.
“You know the kind you eventually get better from? That ain’t the kind I got” WHERE is the quote from it’s killing me
Watchmen
ComicPOP Ah that’s it!
Cody Demchy moloch says it in watchmen. That quote had me laughing so hard

Ethan wants to call someone a fool. I've been on the fence but that clinches it. Ethan is a mad scientist confirmed.
I think the Skrull General was my favorite part of the story. That and Thanos. On his deathbed, two of his greatest enemies came, not to gloat, but to honor him. Not bad for a character that no one's freaking seen do anything
That comic crushed me as a 12-13 year old! Absolutely love it!
11:43 Sal YOU FOOL! it was lung cancer.
i just yelled "YOU FOOL!" at my brother like 10 minutes ago before i saw this video
my grandpa died of cancer so this episode hit home
Same here, and I have a friend who has dealt with it 4 times now.
Marvel’s first graphic novel, a ComicPOP historic moment.
Im probably the only one who wants a Monica Rambeau story :(
Nope down for more people to learn who Monica is
I said it elsewhere.. they gotta do Nextwave. I know they have it, and Sal's referenced it before.
@@HollowGolem nextwave, please!
Nope
Whos monica
It's not Attuma...classic lol
I appreciate Captain Marvel for the simple fact that hes stayed dead all these years.
You didn't notice that the Silver Surfer was there. He was still trapped on Earth when Mar-Vell died. It was explained years later. That Silver Surfer was a Skrull spy.
I'm tired of all these Skrull spies making my continuity nebulous - A Skrull spy.
In James Robinsons FF run, Reed actually runs into a villain who claims he cured cancer. He then destroyed it because hes evil.
What a dick.
Was it Doom? Because, let's be honest, Doom would do that. That sounds like a Doom thing to do.
Because Doom had some lost artwork and burned it because "it displeased him".
@@dinosaurusmaximus8506 It was an original Robinson creation calling himself the Quiet Man. He also indicated he had been orchestrating some of the worst things that have happened to the FF (like Sues miscarriage and Ben being the only member of the FF without an off switch.) His villainous origin story was that Reed had asked out Sue before he did, by the way.
@@dinosaurusmaximus8506 Dooms contribution to the story was that he took in Valeria when she ran away after the Quiet Man reawakened the Malice personality and Sue became verbally and emotionally abusive towards her. Sue actually stormed Latveria, defeated Doom and his army, and actually almost wiped off Doomstadt in its entirety to get her back.
You destroyed the cure for cancer? YOU FOOL!
If you do a Monica Rambeau story, it has to be Nextwave. I'm sure Tiff loves it (I mean, Elsa Bloodstone? What's not to love!?), and I really need to see the guys react to that craziness.
Have them listen to the theme song, too. Just to set the mood.
Just realizing the weird coincidence/continuity(?) of the ending of this & the Death of Spider-Man episode you did. Where Thanos shows up as a like, raisin faced St. Michael looking for a fight. Weird.
Finding out about this story as a kid was the first time I realized comics could carry so much weight.
Definitely do a Monica Rambeaux story - there is so much Carol Danvers stuff out at the moment, it'd be nice to have a look at Mar-vell's first successor!
I second that as Monica is my favorite Captain Marvel.
Monica wasn't Mar-Vell's successor, in fact she never even met him. She just kinda got stuck with the name some time after he passed.
This story is one of my favorite comic stories of all time. It is the perfect way to kill off a character in comics.
Would love to see an Actual Monica As Captan Marvel story, But i'm sure it'll happen some time if we are all lucky.
i made a comment 2 weeks ago about how you havent done this yet....and egg on my face.....you have.... and i thought ive seen EVERY episode. somehow missed the one i asked for 6 years ago!
Such a fun episode as always. When Sal made a joke about Rick making a song about their adventures in the Negative Zone I immediately thought of the lyrics to Danger Zone and was like, “Welcome to the Negative Zone”😂
AND A FOOLISH SAMURAI WARRIOR!
Mar Vells son Genis is my favorite version of Captain Marvel, loved seeing that panel from his series here.
I fell in love with Captain Marvel years ago. To this day, it just irks me this was how they got rid of him. The man was Cosmically-Aware and they killed him with Cancer! (Takes several deep breathing exercises, like my therapist taught me). Now, that being said, I have eventually fallen in love with Carol Danvers and I will be there opening day for her film.
That's kinda the point.
And the movie was a disappointment.
"Spider-Man?! WHERE ARE YOU GOING, YOU SON OF A BITCH?!"
I love how Ben Grimm is depicted as such a fucking idiot in SO MANY stories that involve emotional stakes. It's so funny... Especially when summed up by Sal.
FUTURE SPOILER ALERT!
Apparently Jude Law is NOT playing Mar-Vell, he’s playing StarForce leader and Captain Marvel villain Yon-Rogg! Sounds like in a roundabout way they are giving Carol part of Mar-Vell’s origin: Kree soldier on Earth winds up betraying “their people”, etc. Im curious to see who and how they play out the Mar-Vell to Carol power transfer? I hate this supposed new origin of Carols mom being Kree all along or what ever nonsense that dull Life of Captain Marvel book retconned! Great episode guys, nice and concise. Cheers!
So Sal, when can we expect a "the reign of the captain Marvels"?
I would like a Monica Rambeau Captain Marvel story just because she doesn't get enough love
She was in Secret Wars and a good chunk of Bronze Age Avengers olive like Under Siege. They’ll probably talk about her Sooner or later.
@@MusaMansu Secret Wars like the old one or the one before ANAD
@@99jmaster The original.
This episode was great, I really want to get a copy now. Mar-vel never seemed interesting to me but in this story, they treat him very well and give him a good death
You fools!!! Definitely adding that to my everyday vernacular. Love you guys! Another amazing episode. And love bens “end line.” That was hilarious.
Anyone ever notice when Ben says a funny joke that everyone laughs super hard and then once it calms down, he smirks to himself and kind of shakes with pride. It is the highlight of every episode lmao
I never read this one but was super curious about it for years. Thanks a ton Sal!!!
This was a great story. Thank you so much for going over this story.
Wow what a sad and touching story. It is super well done and I'm glad you guys covered it
Sal's wide eyed look at 11:44 is great. I always assumed either lung or heart cancer. Edit: I also don't think scorpion could beat a guy with cancer. He fought eddie brock who had cancer, with the venom symbiote and still lost.
I'm extra appreciative for Back Issues today because I had to walk through a blizzard from my train station to work. It was nice to listen to you guys on the walk!
I love you guys so much. Just lost my aunt, seeing this video and your heart full discussions has brought a tear to my eyes. You guys are the best.
Great episode. Sal did a great job covering this story with respect.
LOL!!! Really thought this is a Shazam Story. 😂😂😂😂
Man I've been looking forward to you guys doing this story since I started following your channel a few years back I am pumped!
You guys knock it out of the park with this one. Beautiful episode.
The background for your set looks great now, guys. Good job.
I would LOVE a Monica Rambeau story!
Me too. She's my favorite Captain Marvel too.
WOW "evil death worshiping garbage" nice reference to Batman: Under the Red Hood.
Probably the best Captain Marvel story and that’s not saying much
That's not true There is... Uh.... Uh.... You got me
adam quenano I can’t even think of a good Shazam story.....
Have you read a captain marvel story ?
VanXanaX For marvel I meant. I love both male versions more than the current one
Yeah, there is ,of course, the book Sal has but they also put out a trade that was called The Life and Death of Captain Marvel that featured a few stories of his. They're okay.
saw it posted 20 seconds ago, very hyped for something i am currently watching.
is that Etrigan, The Demon at 25:07 in the bottom left corner?
Nope, that's Gargoyle who is a part of of the New Defenders!
This is such a beautiful story
This is my favorite story. Beautifully done. I read it at my local book store. Back Issues answered our requests and delivered. I REALLY want to come on the show with you guys and talk everything comics!! I sound like Arron Quionnes from Vvariant Comics: "Next time when I talk about ALL THINGS COMICS".😂😂😂
Another great episode you guys, but a cosmic character like mar-vell has me thinking...maybe you guys could do nova one day?
Another comment form me: Please do Monica Rambeau😊🙏🏻
Love the slick titles!
Great episode. It's often very difficult to make a funny episode that captures the pathos of a story like this, but you struck a great balance.
For Jude Law's Mar-Vell, how about this? Since the movie is set in the 90s, don't do anything at all. But, if the second movie is set in the present (and she got there via time travel), have her discover that he passed away of cancer after she left.
Seeing works informed by personal loss (Jim Starlin and Jeff Loeb as major examples) elevate the typical comic book storytelling structure is a big reason I love this medium.
‘It’s not Atuma’ got me, ngl
PLEASE DO A MONICA STORY!
Love the channel! I hope to see X-Men The Death of Sabertooth one day Sal! X-Men is my favorite.
MOONIE'S GOT THIS SHIT HELD DOWN!
Nevermind, his back was just broken again by The Fly...
Excited you did this book, I’m gonna come back when I read it. Still hit the like tho
One of Marvel's first graphic novels and a great one at that
Not having the best day. This show always manages to put a smile on my face!
I love your icon!
@@BrightBlue925 Thanks, I drew it a while back. :)
Please do Monica Rambeau
You guys should do Peter David's Genis-Vell run.
I loved this story. If you can, please do a story from Monica's time as Captain Marvel. Even though it will come after Carol,It will be cool to show her after.
I’d like a Monica Rambo back issues 🔥🔥🔥
Me too, she's always my favorite growing up! It’s Rambeau actually😂
Mar-Vell is my favorite hero. He was someone I looked up too. He was Superman of the Marvel Comics lore. But instead of a killing machine like Doomsday that killed Superman in the 90s, a “killing virus” like cancer takes Mar-Vell out and he never comes back.😔😢
Still the best Captain Marvel comic...
Which is really sad if you think about it
Nah, since Monica got screwed by marvel , I'm fine with this
I mean its a great story right so
Its not really sad
@@theringsragingflameinciner3901 the sad thing is that there haven't made stories even close this good since it
@@liverusrock6789 well thats......one way to look at it
@@AnarchicArachnid whos monica?
There are only a handful of characters whose most impactful contribution to comics is dying: Captain Marvel, Uncle Ben, Gwen Stacy, and (trigger warning) Jason Todd
what about the Waynes or krypton?
Logan Flowers those aren’t exactly “characters” though I suppose in that vain Uncle Ben might not be consider a “character” as much as a plot device
Jason Todd LIVES Forever & Never.
Also Goliath. To be specific, the one who got a hole blown through his chest during Civil War.
Please do a Monica Rambeau story!
Oh man why do I never have any snacks whenever a back issue is uploaded?!?!?!?!??😫😢😅😂🤣😂
I’d love to see a Monica story I’m really curious about her character.
An absolutely beautiful story
Yes Monica Rambeau please!
The trade is out next month, but would you guys be able to do Tom King and Mitch Gerads' Mister Miracle?
I call my partner a FOOL all the time !
I actually read the "What If Captain Marvel had not Died" book before reading this one, so you can imagine that I was a little confused without the context provided by this book. Turns out Captain Marvel would have become a bit of a prick had he lived.
Will you please do Starlin’s run on Captain Marvel or his Warlock run? I think you guys would have some fun with how wild and heavy it is
So i picture that Moon knight is on earth when some fucking aliens show up and he's just standing there like wtf
Would you guys ever do The Walking Dead volumes
I always assumed that Captain Marvel had lung cancer. After all, he got cancer from breathing in nerve gas. It only makes sense.
This is not the Captain Marvel I was hoping for.
Gah! I'm so excited! I love this story!
I remember reading a return of Captain Marvel in AvX Secret Avengers tie-in. I don’t think it was a fake one? Does anyone more about that ‘return’. All I remember is he dies at the end of it anyhow and rejuvenates a planet.
He comes back, but it was only temporary. He sacrificed his life again in the same issue.
Oh, so this was the mistery comic, great!
I actually really like Mar-Vell pre more superhero look. Felt very different from all the other Marvel comics going on at the time and had him appear a lot more militaristic. Those early issues when they give him the red suit are also just not very good they actually make him into a SHAZAM/Captain Marvel rip-off with him swapping with Rick Jones (even at one point saying SHAZAM to transform) which he wasn't prior to that.
I reread my copy of the TPB and I was shocked that Carol Danvers wasn't among the heroes at Mar-Vell's last moments. I know Carol got her powers while trying to save Mar-Vell's life but apparently the two weren't that close. This is strange since the reason why Carol's origin was retconned recently in _Life of Carol Danvers_ was because Margaret Stohl insists the two had a huge connection.
She was originally a supporting character in his comic before she even had powers, they were pretty close. Sounds like more of an oversight than something deliberate.
It feels even weirder when they say the whole galaxy hears about him having cancer. I think they just forgot about her
Monica Rambo would be good to in the lead up, but not right as the movie is released
Huh ok I’m gonna be waiting for a announcement by Sal and Tiffany in the near future
I'd love to see a Monica Rambeau story on back issues!

Okay so, I've been searching for ages, does anybody know what episode the "imprinted onto him" gag came from? I've been searching since Fall.
I don't know if you know the origin, but they are referencing a moment from one of the Matrix movies. Unfortunately I don't know the first time they make the reference on camera, but I am pretty sure they've been doing it since they were filming at the comic shop. Hope that helps!
"You know the kind you eventually get better from? Not that"
What was that reference from? It's on the tip of my tongue. Is it Deadpool, maybe? I can't remember.
It's from "Watchmen"
Antonio Medina Ah, thank you
I clicked on this thinking this was Shazam, and didnt notice hulk there until the 10 minute mark.
that's beautiful...
Ooh the death of captain marvel awesome
Wasp dies... captain marvel sacrifices herself ....with the avengers to erase the marvel universe and save humanity
