      What was steel was great.
What was plastic was bad after ten years.
      The leather was OK.
      Electrics were flukey like VWs
Interior panels fell off though and needed new clips after ten years. Glovebox cover fell off and the glue looked like dried peanut butter
I did the work myself, but you had to do something every week.
The plastic grew brittle much faster than a similar age Taurus wagon my wife had side by side with it.
For a "luxury" marketed car, i found it fun to drive and loved the motor but no more luxurious for the riders than a 1974 Maverick.

A Stewart Stainless Steel water pump will be the last one you need to buy. A Mishimoto radiator fan will cool better and help your mpg a little, an aluminum thermostat housing is like $15 on eBay.
If you haven't already, rear shocks, RTABS, and steel tubular rear toe arms. Front struts, strut mounts, solid control arm Lolipops, and a solid steering guibo will make it handle better then new.
Garagistic solid mount aluminum shifter with their steel tubular dual sheer selector rod, with AKG poly transmission mounts, and a stainless clutch fork pivot will make it shift way better.
A SuperSprint back box, M50 intake manifold swap with a 540i MAF, carbon fiber cold air intake bigger injectors and a chip tune will make it run better.

I had a 1996 318i when it was only 6 years old and had done 96,000 miles. When I regretfully parted with it in 9 years later, I had got it to 250,000 miles with only minor maintenance such as oils changes, air filter, coolant change and sparks. Easily the best car I have owned. Just look after those E36 cars and they are bullet proof. No surprise yours has got well over 300,000 miles. Heard of the early E36s having head gasket problems early on in their lives. You got to watch for corrosion on the arches as well and coolant and oil levels creeping downwards slowly over time. The service lights can easily be reset using a paperclip between particular contacts on that round plastic computer socket under the bonnet. Thanks for the video, brought back a lot of great memories for me.

e30's had better build quality in some areas, and some people just prefer the styling. Only thing I don't like about the 325i e30's is the timing belt.

These older BMW were great, especially their 6 cylinders. Their 90's era 1.6 and 1.8 liter 4 cylinders sucked. They didn't last long because they had crank bearings that wear out completely at ~100-130k miles. Low oil pressure warning comes on in idle and lower RPM which means bearings can't hold oil pressure and a rebuild is due.

I've always been interested in the 4 bangers but I heard they are not as robust. Thanks for the technical info!

I love the e36! I had a '98 328i white on black w/ aftermarket staggered 18s. Drove like a champ & always got compliments on her. Ended up selling because a $9 oil filter housing gasket that needed to be replaced was gonna cost me $900 in labor! But I just bought a '02 325i 5-speed with 227k miles for $800. CEL is on & she needs some detailing. But drives amazing. It just isn't smogged yet, but I got the 30-day TOP, so I'm on the road! I really enjoyed this review. Kudos to Scotty & the proud owner of that high mileage e36.

OHCUHC 300 , I have a 330 xi, that cost $3400 almost 5 years ago. I’ve put in a new battery and a fuel pump, plus regular oil changes. The newer BMWs can be money pits, but if you find one that was maintained well, with records and you do the simple things, like with any car, they can be no more costly than other cars. There are lots of readily-available parts that aren’t too pricey. My fuel pump cost $49 brand new. It depends on how you use and take care of your cars. I also had a Ford Expedition up until a year ago. It was a 2001 I bought used. Bought tires and a battery for it, plus oil changes. I owned it for 10 years and it had 240,000 on it when I sold it. It was still in great shape, I just didn’t use it much any more. Most cars depend on how you care for them.

Stuttgart up mate have you watched the video entirely ? ??? The guy said in the video that if you can work on German cars it's great because you are going to save a lot of money however if you go to a dealership you will regret badly

@tyvek05 Yes, they are endless money pits, that is ALL cars. Some (BMW) cars just cost more than others. Basic physical law are in play here, namely Entropy. Study up!

I work at a gas station and one of the guys drives a 90s one (don't remember which model right now) and he has about 250k miles on his. Know another guy who had 220k before his engine blew. Early beamers were great. It's just now they're terrible

Why do people abuse their cars like this? I had a 1994 325i that I put 290,000 miles on and I only put a thermostat, water pump, and 4 wheel bearings during the time I owned it. I sold it to a friend and he put another 150,000 miles on it with another t-stat and water pump. Do your regular maintenance with high quality fluids and these car will last forever. My friend only sold the car because he started a family and needed an bigger car.....it was still pristine inside and out at 450,000 miles!
