With less than 1 month to go until the release of Hogwarts Legacy on PS5, PC & Xbox consoles, the drama and controversy over a potential boycott for the game is becoming more and more prevalent on social media. Many people have voiced unhapiness with J.K. Rowling and her attachment to the franchise, urging others to stay away from buying the game and calling anyone who doesn't a lot of names in the process. In this video, I share my thoughts on the situation. Thanks for watching! :) - Hry
Which style of videos do you all prefer? Scripted or on-camera discussions?

@@Arriss2121 Thanks for the input, Jeff ;)
Depends on the subject really, if it's just news or your opinion about something happening in the gaming world recently it fits better with a spontaneous approach, but if it's a more in depth video analysis or review/retrospective with some research and such involved then scripted is definitely better.
It's not just Hogwarts Legacy's Drama, but basically 98% of gaming related Drama... heck, it's basically 98% of internet Drama that isn't real.
I basically only find out about this endless new drama through CZcams content creators discussing the drama.
Leaving Twitter and all other social media has really severed the ties that kept me in that loop, and I don’t mind at all.
@@HumanPerson_final
i'm still there, but primarily foe shits and giggles over those overly sensitive wokies 🥰
98 % of it is people trying to chase attention, recognition and a sense of power by hypocritically complaining and virtue signaling about a bunch of shit which never concerned them in the first place, being offended on behalf of others and attacking people based on their race and gender while proclaiming to be against racism and sexism.
100% internet dram isn't real nothing that happens on the internet matters the only reason it looks like it dose is because people are fucking stupid
@@addex1236 untrue. Some of the drama which happens on the internet is spawned from things that happened irl
That’s the real fallacy right there, that we “live in a world revolving around social media.” That only happens if you let social media run your life. Turn off your phone. Get off of Tik Tok and Twitter. Your life will be much simpler and less drama filled.
My tik tok is just videos of cats and borzois 😂
Problem is our political world runs off it too, it’s such a problem
I've never used TwAtter And the Chinese spyware app will never ever grace my phone with its curse. I've only ever been to reddit when I'm looking for specific information of how to beat a certain boss in a game or find a hidden item. And the rest of them are so small I don't even bother paying attention to them. As far as fake book goes they've had me shadow banned since I turned from supporting Bernie to supporting Trump. Social media has never ran my life because my life is too busy to be bothered with looking at it all the time. And I think that's probably the problem with a lot of these local millennials they spend too much time looking at it because they don't have anything productive to do with their lives. I guess when you have to work a job to provide for others and yourself You tend to have a more focused mindset. Worrying about the necessities in life as opposed to the dreams. And what little escapism People who work get to enjoy is being constantly destroyed by this woke ridiculous alphabet mindset. So when I see A game an IP an author or a actor who stands firm on Opposing That's societal destructive ideology. The old meme comes to mind "SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY"!
Also I think I should went the other way and said JK Rowling was personally involved in the work, because that would make d*** sure she got a h*** of a lot of sales! People are sick of this woke mind virus destroying every good IP there is for escapism. To have at least one that stands up to it is a godsend !
Look out the window I always say, there's a world outside
That's not just with gaming drama. It's all drama, everywhere, all the time.
You're not wrong lol
People also say that the LGBT communty are on twitter are the worst, if they have no one to hate they will hate on eachother
@@paradoxzee6834 thats any social media addict honestly 🤣
Always helpful to have people sort out the Twitter debacles from what they primarily are just a rabbit hole of excessive labeling and derailment.
What genuinely annoys me is how media takes these takes from twitter and spins it as headlines as if they were somehow popular opinions. They aren't, even if they come from echochambers that garner thousands of virtue signaling likes from those who specifically seek out every confirmation bias for their newest trending outrage.
Mainly it's an annoying frustration, because there are plenty of people who see it in the media and then adopt that view, think it is true, join a "movement of the week"...
@@sarcasm-83 At the end of the day its 2 echochambers arguing against each other - twitter libs vs gamergate.
But I do hate how the media lampshades "outrage" culture, and lets the propaganda seep into the casual audience.

@@343ishill Yeah.. well said

You made a good point with the gaming community being so politically vocal about boycotting this game, yet we don’t carry this same energy for other franchises that have blatant anti consumer practices. How much money have we given away to overpriced season passes, microtransactions, copy and paste yearly sequels etc. yet some people seem to be so “split” on whether or not to support this game.
What boycott? Last I checked the game seemed to be doing very well (steam preorders) and there's a lot of interest for it.
I personally don't expect much of it but am curious to see how it fares (obviously won't care much for the gaming sites reviews, their opinions don't have much value for me).
HP universe is liked by a lot of people and the game will probably sell well (sadly, even if the game sucks), regardless of subreddits filled with propagandists.
@@xtrwq there’s a vocal demographic of people who are against this game. It’s funny because despite this, the game has already made a lot of money on pre orders. I’m just saying that we need to have this energy for other negative practices
The thing is gaming is so large and fragmented and certain big IPs so valuable that even if you make a sound ethical argument, it's not effective on a macro scale.
You might convince 5 people, maybe a couple hundred or thousands if you're a big social media person, but it won't make a dent on anything.
Personally, I don't vibe with bad greedy monetary practices, devs being treated poorly and all the other nasty things companies and people can do.
But I'm just one guy, I'm going to give my money or not and that's pretty much the end of it.
I feel like fighting for your own ethical viewpoints on social media is admirable, but ultimately, you're just taking the mental health damages no matter which side of any issue you stand on.
I swear some folks have the mental fortitude of a superhuman when it comes to arguing endlessly online. They're just built different I guess, introvert me could never.
@@xavierarial24 You hit the nail on the head. You can waste your time arguing on social media about what’s ethical and what’s not, but the fact of the matter is that people have already made up their minds before they engaged with you. The people that are you to buy Howgarts Legacy are going to buy it no matter what you say, so it should be “to each his own”. There are plenty of people AND KIDS that just want to enjoy a great Harry Potter game without the political backlash of JK Rowling
It's not the gaming community it's r/gamingcirclejerk
So many articles describe the game as "controversial," but I have yet to see anything from the game that truly fits the bill. It's only "JK Rowling hates trans people," which I don't think is even mostly true. I think she does support trans people, she just feels that there's a fundamental difference between women and trans women (there is), and she's advocating for women's rights and women-only spaces because she's a woman. I don't think that's too crazy of an ask, honestly, and it's insane that there are people so radicalized by their postmodern ideology that they're painting her as the devil himself.
I wouldn't describe myself as being on Rowling's political "side," some things she's looked to change about her work after the fact to be inclusive makes me roll my eyes so hard it hurts, but she's entirely in her right to have her views and those views do not diminish her contributions to pop culture. She's my generation's George Lucas.
In the grand scope of things, Harry Potter is so big that any anti-Rowling sentiment amounts to a superminority. When the books first started to release, she had to contend with uber-Christians looking to get them banned because it depicted magic. The religious right lost that fight, and the commotion only helped it succeed. Today, the progressive left will lose the same battle for the same reason, and the only difference between then and now is how much bigger the fanbase is after over 20 years, 8 books, and like 11 movies. There was no hope of this hollow "boycott" winning.
Hell, the anti-Rowling people are so dumb that they'll buy her books just to re-bind them without her name on them to sell on eBay at a premium. I suppose it's an easy way to make money off of other rubes, but I don't know how legal that is.
I pre-ordered my copy of Hogwarts Legacy on Friday. I'm gonna enjoy it. Radicalized Twitterers will seethe. Nothing of value will be lost.
even in some of the comments people calling her trans phobic but she us not. what needs to happens the trans community needs to stand up and fuk all these extremist off before the whole of the trans community get a bad name
I have no doubts that the vast majority of those screaming boycott never had any plans to buy the game to begin with.
Guess I'm a transhphobe
Yeah me too
So what hey
Wtf are they going to do about it.

Kinda tired of this subjects, but you have good points and handled it in a mature way which honestly is refreshing in todays kindergarten politic landscape. Thumbs up for being better 👍
Preach brother. My awakening was leaving Twitter 2 years ago.
Absolute bliss
Fact: Cancel culture made me pre-order this game.
Cancel culture doesn't exist in the wqy you think. Stop swallowing all that propaganda and think for yourself. I'm going to love this game but I'm not as delusional as you.
@@kennymarket2428 Nothing you wrote changes my stated fact.
About a year ago I saw some trailer and decided that this game was not for me.
Videos responding to calls for cancellation exposed me to more recent game content and I decided to await the reviews first.
Checking the Steam discussion board to ask about Linux-compatibility, I saw that about one-fifth of the topics were from people calling for cancellation and that made me rage-buy the game.
I still don't even know if it will run on my OS.
I like both types of videos. Your videos have been entertaining but also thought-provoking. Keep up the good stuff.
Thank you for the information and I agree with your opinions!
Excellent points and well spoken. Subbed.
This video inspired me to make a video on the topic. Great vid.
There's a difference between criticizing a game/developer because a game is bad or not ready, and criticizing them because you don't like the creator of the IP. To choose to let the devs, who put trans inclusive features into the game and who could use bonuses received from the game selling well to donate to trans supporting causes, suffer because you think there's a chance a billionaire will donate royalties to transphobic causes, is asinine. There is always some piece of shit involved in the making of the greatest pieces of art. The only difference here is that we know the details. It's also super weird that the people saying you should boycott it never mention that you can just buy it used instead. They act like Harry Potter is transphobic just because the creator is and it makes the trans community look cringe.
Hi Robin, wondering if you are going to finish your Uncharted retrospectives and do Drake’s Deception?
I completely agree with you.
I like point you made where people should probably be doing more “boycotting” against these companies. A lot of them just don’t make their product good anymore or don’t care, but have the nerve to charge $60-70.

That article said JK is not directly involved in the game that doesn't mean that she's not Consulting on Lore and character information. It's her series of course they would want her input to some degree. Also just because you don't agree with her views doesn't mean she doesn't have the right to Express them. That's freedom of speech. Wise words my friend
The fact that their willing to show us so much of the game shows me that they’re proud and want to show it off. Most games now it’s like they don’t wanna show you anything because they know how bad the product is
There are so few games these days with good graphics and a good single player story. I have to get this game just for that.

Solid video! Love the non-biased, and logical approach to the topic. It’s rare to see games media coverage that isn’t so reactionary and partisan.
It’s simple. Respect differing opinions, and if you can’t do that, remove yourself from the discourse.

Completely agree with you on this one mate. Allowing a game to get you this worked up isn’t healthy imo, they need to log off and get back to regular life.
It sucks cause at the time this was fairly true. However, things did escalate quite a bit and I think this situation is what started it. People started to get creative with how they harass others. Doxxing, real threats, mailing things to people's houses, and a constant barrage of harassment until people left the internet completely. The ideal situation shouldn't be just don't engage with the internet at all cause it's just not a realistic ask. Especially if you make your living online.
The saddest example is probably Jocat

Chiming in as a nonbinary person here. I am exactly the type of person that JKR has tweeted against, I was AFAB....and you know what I just dont care. At the end of the day JKR has no idea who I am, she never will know who I am, I'm going to play the game and enjoy it because that's what I want to do. I despise her views but I can separate her views from the game. If someone wants to boycott it that's fine and I totally get it but whatever man, it's just a game at the end of the day. There's far worse things out in the world to worry about. Those same people tweeting out against JKR are doing it on their iPhones made by literal child and slave labor. The disconnect is just so extreme.
Buying it couldn't care less about the transgender stuff. If people don't want to play it that's fine but vilify those who are looking forward to it.
people are allowed to have an opinion, nobody is required to agree. Those who understand this tend to think thier own thoughts, not someone elses.

It's a sad state of affairs if we got this far that we cannot just purchase a product we are interested in without feeling the social pressure to apologize in advance to a toxic mob lying in wait to jump at us with their torches and pitchforks.
Why apologize? Screw those freaks.
Dam that 1st sentence of the video is very useful these days
If being transphobic means buying your dream game about your childhood franchise. then I’m the most transphobic person ever.
I really wonder whether Rowling does actually earn royalties for every sale of the game or not. It's entirely possible that she simply sold the videogame-rights to WB Games, and now it's theirs to use within this project. That way it wouldn't even really make a difference if people buy the game or not because she would've been paid up front for the rights.
It all depends on the actual contract between Rowling and WB/Portkey Games and unless we see that or if anyone involves actually states that she earns money from this yes or no, then it's no use speculating I think.
From what i took from the first minute, people should get off social media and spend more time in the real world
This is one of the biggest psy-ops in gaming history
I like this guy, he's based. People these days see unable to separate the art from the artist...
I'm a fan of H.P. Lovecraft's works, so I've learned to do that for awhile.
Meanwhile, JK Rowling sipping wine and preloading Hogwarts's Legacy....😂
If buying a product from a disagreeable source makes the consumer a hypocrite (or lumped into the same category as said disagreeable source), then we're ALL hypocrites for the exact same reason, because of corporate ownerships. To simplify: Say there are 50 companies, all owned by one of 5 corporations. Say that's 10 companies a piece. However, they don't all advertise who owns them outright. All 5 are going to take at least one disagreeable stance. Are you going to boycott all 50 companies? Who do you buy from, now? I hope I've made my point clear enough.
CP2077 got me with the hype...Gonna wait for reviews to decide if I buy or not.
Like I care what others think. Looks like a fun game and I am most likely buying it. Want to see the early gameplay first.
If anyone truely thinks that not buying this game is going to impact J.K. Rowling's finances, after the amount of books, movies and infinite merchandise across the globe, they're very mistaken.
Everyone else in the production would be affected and that'd damage the wrong thing.
Also, going around harrassing people who buy this game is only ever going to increase the amount of hate in the world, not reduce it...
So if any of those people who think this way read this; Please consider your battles more carefully if truely aiming to do good. There is no scenario in this entire thing where something is somehow gained or improved. There's no good to be achieved from making a campaign of hate that touches so many more people than just the one you dislike (Rowling) and it will NOT advance anything in the trans community either, as it's very likely to show up as one more rather misguided outrage that will likely increase the prejudiced disdain for whoever is prone to judge entire groups at a time in that prejudiced way.
(I wish we could finally start to try and learn to treat all people as individuals and not punish all similar people for the actions of the worst in their "peer group"... but I guess that's a bit too much to ask for from humanity.)
Oh and I don't know if I'll buy it. If the reviews say good things, yeah, I likely will. I always wanna wait games to actually release these days before making my decision. (I've been a happier gamer ever since I decided to have the patience to wait for all the info I could ever need after release. Can wholeheartedly recommend to everyone...)
the streissand effect
Appreciate the level-headed analysis. I definitely agree about promoting the idea of being judicious with what you purchase. People would get exactly (or close to exactly) what they want much more often if they did this. I’m fine with products being more polarizing if it meant less of a compromise for those who want a particular thing.
Great opinion 👍🏼👍🏼
People like to try to control people's money
I agree that the people boycotting this game are a few people with very loud voices. And I could care less about this quote on quote drama surrounding it. All that matters to me is if i want this game, I'll get the game as simple as that.
Now I'm all for a Boycott if it's warranted but this ain't it for me now it might be for someone else.... I'm not about to deprive myself of something I wanna play just because a few people have beef with a woman that didn't even make the game.

People are too lazy for any boycott in general. Wasn't the last one that actually did something during the Nelson Mandela situation? That was ages and when people actually stood up for their values and were willing to give up convinience for the good cause. Today, no one would ever do that, unless it's literally personally affecting themself.
How about Boycotting first person shooter games.
It's a buy for me I'm not getting involved in all the political nonsense I love harry potter and the world it had built its a defo buy can't wait to explore the world people have no right to be little others simply because they enjoy a product that has nothing to do with the actual person other then making the universe.
i preordered the game a while ago, and i honestly don't give a damn about the ppl complaining.
I get what you are saying and I somewhat agree, but turning off the phone is not a solution in my opinion.
Saying that 'this doesn't concern me' is like putting your head in the sand and ignore the problem.
I don't mean we should take one side from 2 arguments because life is not black and white.
It is as you said that we should vote with our wallets, and that is what you should talk about instead of ignoring the drama.
We should turn the drama into an informative debate and not dismiss it altogether.
If you like the game but don't agree with the person behind it there are other solutions beside buying or not.
I just think and ignoring the drama won't make it go away.
What's the commotion tbh
