    We've had a lot of news surrounding Naughty Dog over the last couple of weeks. Neil Druckmann talked about the development process for their next game, assembling a writers room and turning it into a more collaborative effort. A popular leaker by the name of ViewerAnon on Twitter suggested that Naughty Dog's next game would not be a new IP, but in fact be The Last of Us Part 3. In this video, I talk about what I think the consequences would be of choosing to go with another sequel to The Last of Us 2 after its controversial reception. I also discuss a little bit about its sales, and the future of Factions 2, which should be coming out in 2023 but still hasn't seen any trailer or gameplay. Thanks for watching!

      There was not much controversial reception to The Last of Us Part 2 outside of some snowflake hysteria about the leaks. More Game of the Year awards than any other game in history, ten million plus in sales, 93 on metacritic, and obviously enough succcess for Sony to bet on the series more than any other series. Just because some hysterical babies online got upset about girls kissing and review-bombed the thing doesn't take anything away from the near uniformity of the approval it got outside of the more sensitive corners of the web

    I am one of the people who never actually asked for a sequel to TLOU. The first game worked perfectly as a standalone experience. Not everything needs to be a franchise.
    There are three main reasons I refuse to appreciate TLOU2. First, it's the crunch. I will never understand how this game won the Best Game Direction when it got leaked before it released and Druckmann forced his employees to overwork 100+ hours on the game, thus causing employees to leave the company. If you defend something like this, you are not a good person.
    Second, the story was done with favoritism rather than using logic. Joel's death was never the problem, it's the way it was set up. The fanboys will always use the excuse of "He got soft for five years, which why he is trusting strangers now" but it seems like they forget that Stranger Danger is relevant no matter the setting, the time and the location. Abby never did anything for Joel and Tommy to earn her trust. I'd take "show, don't tell" over exposition anyday. Also, Abby's campaign feels like it could have been done without Joel and Ellie involved. Most of the events have nothing to do with them.
    Thirdly, this game did nothing new, both gameplay wise and story. What new things did they add within the gameplay? A jump button? Been a thing since Mario and it's so useless in this game. Going prone? Metal Gear Solid 3 did it first. Dodging? God of War would like to have a word with ya. The story itself is just a boring revenge story which steals the plot concept from Silent Hill 3 and the risks from Metal Gear Solid 2.
    The game isn't necessarily bad but it never deserved the high reception. I will never listen to critics ever again and you shouldn't too.

    • @EyobFitwi
      @EyobFitwi Před rokem +3

      I didn't play the game but your take is similar to my conclusion based on what I've heard and read, perhaps except for the gameplay which many think is good. I would've given TLOU2 a chance, but Druckman's arrogant marketing, aggressive woketivism and his fanboys turned me off (though disgruntled gamers also played a significant role in adding toxicity to the controversy).

    • @Dass_Jennir
      @Dass_Jennir Před rokem +4

      Agreed with the no need for the sequel. TLOU was a self conclusive masterpiece. It's sad the only games that don't get a sequel are those that sold poorly or were outright bad.

    • @DarkAttackYT
      @DarkAttackYT Před rokem +2

      @@EyobFitwi I didn't say the gameplay wasn't good. It's just nothing original. It's the same as the first game, but with a jump mechanic, prone and dodging. That's pretty much it. The gameplay can be a lot of fun, no matter if it's new or old.

    • @DaPeasant
      @DaPeasant Před rokem

      What new gamplay mechanic would you suggest? A character that levitates constantly? They shoot out their mouth instead of a gun? I mean I understand your argument if someone says "we've never seen a character go prone before". But people say those things are new to the TLOU franchise, not gaming in general and are an improvement on the gameplay and world exploration of the original. An example is the semi open settings in part 2, they are an absolute master stroke on how to make improvements on a previous installment. Is that concept original? No. I'm not defending the narrative of part 2, but to say its gameplay isn't an improvement on the first is flat out incorrect in my opinion.
      Besides, what is fresh and new these days? If you live by your reasons to hate on TLOU 2 because it "stole" ideas from other games, then you should be applying that to 99% of any art created. It all steals ideas from something that came before. Without that we wouldn't have great movies, tv shows, games, podcasts, books, etc releasing as regularly as it does. What is important is to continue acknowledging the sources an artist borrows from, but not say something is crap because of that practice.

Joel can definitely die but in way that honors his existing character and wit. All you need is to create another scenario where Ellie learnt the truth, got emotional, put herself in danger, Joel again wrecked havoc but sacrificed himself at the end to save Ellie's life and finally earned her forgiveness. No NPC that Joel or Ellie kill in these games gets a honorable death, why should they then be a exception? Had Joel’s daughter a honorable Death? Saying the story is garbage is garbage. You're sure 10m copies sold is profitable?
    Well let's go ahead and go the extra mile:
    TLOU2's budget was 200m (100m production, 100m marketing), this is already a bloated budget for a videogame. However, a full-priced AAA copy of a videogame only brings 14 bucks for the developer, the rest going to distribution and publisher costs. That brings us to only 140m for 10m, which is not profitable given the bloated budget.
    But that's not all: This is 10m *lifetime* sales, meaning not all copies were sold at full-price. Some weren't even sold for any price given it went free on PSN for a time, meaning that number only goes lower. Now: Pair this with Sony's unreasonable expectations for games, where Days Gone is considered a failure despite having sold *exponentially over their budget.* Kinda shows why Naughty Dog's game projects are being handed to other studios now. Funny enough, despite being a "failure," the Days Gone studio was trusted with the latest remaster of TLOU.
    They needed Avengers-level returns on an Avengers-level budget, instead they sold as poorly as the Avengers videogame. But it doesn't stop there: Why don't we bring up that the latest remaster sold *worse* than the Saints Row reboot, likely as a direct result of this game's abysmal performance.
    We're still reaching the same conclusion, that there's dismal times ahead for Naughty Dog under Neil Druckmann, but the results of his leadership are *immediate.* They're hemorrhaging money, and if Part 3 has a similar budget to TLOU2, it'll be a legendary embarrassment.
    *And no TLOU2 fan will bring numbers to contradict this.*

    One thing I really hated about people’s defense of tlou2’s story was how they said Joel doomed humanity by killing Abby’s dad and not letting Ellie’s operation go though which justified Abby killing him. Like the world is already way past gone by that point. There’s groups like the seraphites, a crazy cult, and the wolves, a crazy and ruthless paramilitary, and murderers and thieves hiding and living in cities and towns that kill other survivors that go through their territory. Plus a cure wouldn’t even cure the hundreds of millions or even billions of infecteds still roaming the world. Also I doubt much people would even care for a cure because by that point every human would most likely be part of a faction that would be more focused of taking care of their own.

    • @dorkangel1076
      @dorkangel1076 Před rokem +2

      The story (or part of it) is just the Fireflies view of it and their view is valid to them and reflected in their actions. They all felt Joel deserved it because of the cure but without Abby's driving force they wouldn't have bothered after 4 years. Abby was the driving force because for her it wasn't about the cure, it was about her dad which is why Ellies revelation in the Theatre has little effect on her. For her, it was never about the cure or Ellie (who tends to blame everything on herself being immune). Nothing has changed about the original story. At the end of the game we can have the same discussion over the merits of Joels decision. The only difference is we have a little more context on the Fireflies that we didn't see in the first game. Aa an aside, anyone who got bitten would certainly care about a cure.

    • @DejayClayton
      @DejayClayton Před rokem +7

      I agree that even if a cure was devised by killing Ellie, access to the cure itself would be weaponized. If Fireflies had the cure, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't hand it out to their enemies.

      @kieranarmstrongproductions4743 Před rokem +5

      I have this conversation a lot about the game and think this is something that has to be recognized if you are to enjoy this incredible tale to the fullest extent. By hypercomplicating and postulating on the merits of what the fireflies WOULD and COULD do with a cure, you lessen the impact of the moral dilemma the first game pulls off. I always urge fans to stop focusing on using current world logic and hypotheticals and instead take the story as it is; Joel makes a complicated decision at the end of the first game. Is it right? That's not a yes or no question, the complexity IS the point. As people I think we always search for a definite answer, but if there was one we wouldn't really care much about the game would we? You can assume the Fireflies would weaponize the cure, you could probably support your claim, but truth is we don't know what would happen.

    • @dorkangel1076
      @dorkangel1076 Před rokem +1

      @@kieranarmstrongproductions4743 Good point. I see it as a version of the needs of the many vs the needs of the one and what if that one was someone you really cared about. The doctor and Joel were stuck on opposite sides of a terrible dilemma with no happy outcome. No Ellie or no cure. Arguing whatsboutery over what the Fireflies might do is just the other side of what Marlene tries with Joel. What if Joel saves Ellie then she gets killed by a clicker or murdered by hunters. No Ellie and no cure. To me weaponising the cure would be poisoning it and it giving to your enemies. Using it as a bargaining chip in some sort of ceasefire or treaty is a perfectly reasonable proposition which benefits everyone.

    I honestly didn't enjoy TLOU Pt 2. While the gameplay was fun I just didn't care for the story nor how it was told. And like you said, I had a different picture in my head of what pt 2 was gonna be based on the trailers they put out and when I played it I felt like I was lied to.
    What made the first LOU game so good was the relationship between Joel and Ellie and I wanted another chapter with them especially after what Joel did at the end of the first game. But we didn't get that, instead Joel is killed two hours into a 25-30 hour game and then we get a couple of flashbacks with him, which were the best part of the whole damn game. Not to mention we play his murderer for the second half of the game and she basically gets a bargain brand version of the first game's story, almost like it was a reboot.
    As for what ND could do to bring me back...I'm honestly not sure. I'd rather for them not to do a pt 3 and just let it die and maybe do a brand new IP but even then I'd be worried about that too.
    If they did do a pt 3...maybe if it was focused on completely different characters and maybe even set in a different country during the Apocalypse would be interesting and maybe I'd be back on but as long as Neil Druckmann is still involved with ND, I will be way more cautious than I was before.

    I think it honestly makes the most sense for Naughty Dog to be developing The Last of Us Part 3. They're right off the heels of working on The Last of Us Part 1, The Last of Us Factions Multiplayer Project, and the TV show will be ongoing.
    Part of me wonders if the multiplayer project will launch alongside The Last of Us 3, Similar to Call of Duty Warzone. Perhaps the multiplayer maps will take place in the same game world that the single player game takes place in. This would also make sense, because the concept art indicates the game will take place in San Francisco, which is part of that California bay area that the end of the second game implied the fire flies are in.

Saying their artworks are being stolen or style framed by another user. That being said...no style is copyrighted. Artists take the likeness as inspiration from each other for years. Imo, them taking time to announce their new project is for the better. Both Uncharted 4 and TLOU II were announced too early and it resulted in multiple delays and leaks which made people spoil the hell out of the games on the internet, I suffered it in both cases. I remember back when U4's last delay occurred, due too Rachet and Clank's release, a lot of stores already had the games on stock and rightfully told Sony to f*ck off and starting selling copies regardless, which resulted in more leaks.
    So, if they are finally learning their lesson, I will applaud them. When it comes to favoritism, I've also moved on to other studios such as Respawn and Rockstar. Also, Happy New Year everybody.

    The false marketing was incredibly important to be able to tell the story effectively. The player should NOT know that Joel is going to die, or that you're going to play as Abby. These things need to be surprises for the story to affect the player's emotions in the way the writers intend. I am completely okay with deceptive marketing when it serves the storytelling.
    A game should never be judged by the marketing. In fact, if you're already planning to play a game, you should just stop watching trailers anyway, as they can only potentially spoil parts of the experience. Same goes for movies, TV, etc. Personally, I never saw any of the trailers past that initial teaser, and avoided all of the leaks. My experience was better for it, and I've been doing the same for movies and TV for like 15 years now. I highly recommend it. As soon as you know you're going to watch or play something, stop watching trailers, stop reading news, leaks, reviews, etc. Go into it as blind as possible.
