I have a hat signed by him and another one signed by Federer. So I would consider myself to be quite a lucky guy. AKA What Would Happen All The Time If Court Speeds Hadn't Been Slowed Down to A Crawl. Every fast hard court Roger and Nole have ever played on - Dubai, Cincy, Shanghai? Roger has won all but 2 matches - Dubai in 2011 and 2018 Cincy final. The slower courts (hard courts and the now excruciatingly slow grass at Wimbledon!) is where Roger has trouble beating Djokovic. Otherwise Roger is 8-2 against Djokovic on fast hard courts - 3-1 in Dubai, 3-1 in Cincy and 2-0 in Shanghai. As I always like to say - what would Roger's Slam total be in the tournaments hadn't slowed down the courts in 2008-2009 because he had dominated the previous 5 years? I know some people are going to say that's not the only reason the courts were slowed down - but the end result was the same.

  • @williamabaker12
    @williamabaker12 Před 2 lety +481

    Federer was unbeatable when he didn't sabotage himself with his mind. That's what Novak was better than any of the big 3 with. I think he was forced to master that given crowd's affinity for Roger and Rafa. He almost does it out of spite. I think Fed showed in many matches against Djoker that he was the more talented player, but sometimes faltered mentally at the end, making Novak the better mentally. I guess whoever you pick as the GOAT depends on which of those things you value more. For me, I'll take Roger, because it's fun watching him in beast mode, where literally no one can stop him, even prime Novak. I also think Fed's more "human" mental strength, if you can call it that (I mean, the guy has 20 slams, ffs), is what appeals to many about him. Knowing that generally, the win is on his racket if he keeps it together, but that he may not at times, makes you pull for him. I Think the fact that Fed was so much better and so dominant over the field for multiple years may have actually stunted his growth. I mean, look how long it took him to switch to an updated racket that helped him massively once he finally did. Pride may have played a role in that.
    This doesn't take into account the changing of the courts over the years (drastically slowing down), the difference in the field during that time, etc. For example, I think Novak would've been an all time great regardless, but he wouldn't have won 20 slams had the courts remained the speed they were in the early 2000's, and Fed likely would've had 5 or 6 more, given how scary he is on faster courts. Either way, Fed won nearly 10 more slams after the speed started decreasing.
    So much goes into picking "the greatest" in anything. That's made all the harder when you're still in the moment. I think only history will pick between the big 3, and regardless of my own opinion, I don't fault anyone who picks Rafa or Novak as their greatest. Let's look at everything again in 20 years and see who says what.

    When federer is on, he has dominated novak like this many times when he’s past his prime and novak is in his prime, usually on fast hard courts, dubai and cincy mainly (and shanghai 2014). Masters 1000 and atp 500 hard court tournaments in 2014/2015 he would often destroy novak but froze up in the slams and a lot of important finals. He’s had very good showings at the round robin stages of the atp finals. But novak doesn’t seem to have showings where he thrashed federer (outside of AO). Many of his recent wins over fed have been extremely close, their match at the Paris masters where it was 3 tiebreaks or whatever, wimbledon finals, uso final and semifinals. Indian wells. I think fed can do this bc the nature of his aggressive game which is dependent on getting flow and rhythm and he becomes unstoppable when he gets that rhythm. Fed pushes the play and creates the tempo of the match. Novak is very reactive and tends to counterpunch and even if he’s consistent and gets the majority of their recent matches, he can’t blow fed off the court like roger can to him. He just doesn’t have the aggressive and attacking game that federer can produce. And when federer does, wowwww it’s magical. It’s an honor to be alive when he’s playing.

No. Novak got the better of Roger late in Roger's career - because Roger got OLD. Is that "mental"? No. Roger, Rafa, and Novak are all very close in greatness. That's why there is always a debate about the GOAT among these three. To me, Roger is the best of the big three - because he is the most skilled. He is just a better tennis player - period. Federer's ability to take the ball early and flatten out the returns is impossible to handle.

    The thing is: the pressure was not high enough for Federer to choke. If this were the 2019 Wimbledon final he now also would have 21 Grand Slams.

      Humiliation is not being able to convert match points. Getting dogged by your rival in RG final. Getting bagelled in your final match.

    Agreed -hard to imagine a higher level of tennis than this match-slice, cross court, overhead serve, placement and pace impeccable.there was nothing wrong with jokers game that night, but this might revealed jokers game is fundamentally a defensive one, fed was hitting winners all over the court in every situation.hitting lines crushing shots, getting depth….
