Teaching 2 Year Old Toddler to Snowboard is Harder than I Thought

  • Teaching a 2 year old to snowboard is hard.
    The day before Brady's 2nd birthday, we headed to the ski resort for the first time to help him get more comfortable with the real thing. Since he's done so well riding at home and at our local hill, I assumed that he would handle it just fine.
    It must have been all the new surroundings and people in their gear because he wouldn't even let me pull him around at first. He enjoyed riding up the magic carpet but didn't want to ride at all. I knew this might happen so patience and snacks were our best friend.
    After a rough morning of Brady refusing to be pulled around (and some chocolate), something changed in him and he started to have fun. We ended the day with a few longer runs on the bunny slope and he was as happy as a clam.
    All in all, the day was a total success. The goal was to get him some exposure to the ski resort and we did just that.

    What's up everyone!? So stoked to have you here at the Active Dad community! My name is Jimmy and I have an amazing wife named Meg. We live in Arizona with our son, Brady, that was born in January of 2020. He such a sweet, happy boy and has learned a lot already. We got him a helmet to fix plagiocephaly around 5-1/2 helmets so be sure to follow along with his progress! My wife and I are both very active people who love camping, hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding, wakeboarding and many others. Probably the thing that I'm most excited about with being a parent, is teaching my kids about all the fun activities there are to do in this world that I love.

    Great video! Our 2.5 year old started last season and has been enjoying it but the first part of this video resonates well with our experience in the mountains with the screaming and protesting out of the blue. He loves it though and is pretty amazing already when he wants to, emphasis on "wants to".

    It's possible that he had an expectation that snowboarding on the hill would be just like the snowboarding he had experienced in the backyard. Maybe in his mind he was thinking, no this isn't snowboarding, this is different. It looked just the same to you but everything was new and different to him.

    Good to see as fellow dad out on the slopes teaching their kid. It encourages me to teach my boy who recently turned 4 to snowboard instead of skiing as I'm a snowboarder. I can't ski so it's good to see how you've got the equipment set up to teach a toddler, the backpack harness, hoody, board with pully etc, not something I've seen here in northern Spain.

    First year was a piece of cake. Second is similar to yours. My little one wants me to always hold him. If i try to find compromises, saying "let me hold you for 50 seconds, then you go on your own for 5 seconds", it doesn't work. He just falls down on the ground intentionally. No snacks or resting helps. It's just from the start of the day like that. I've tried to make it more playful, but only managed couple of minutes of "alone" riding, although he knows how to do it. I'm afraid to continue to hold him and i'm afraid to insist on trying it by himself... So far 3-4 weekends have been like that. I'm sticking to holding strategy, at least he rides with me and likes it. At least he now says "powder" where it's at and i can team him some ice and snow. And he recognizes the heel and toe side and names them while riding. So, it's not that bad :)

    • @funkylosik
      @funkylosik Před rokem +1

      upd: couple more weekends and... success. He's riding on his own suddenly in 1 day, can stop on my request multiple times. Rides a bit straight sometimes, but of course, for now mostly on the heel side. Not sure if the "magic fanta that gives strength to ride on his own" or introduction of sweet "plumes" helped... or just timing. So, don't give up :P

    ITS NOT YOUR KID JUST SHUT UP!!
    To the AWESOME DAD!! You are doing a really good job!!! There are hurtles to be jumped in raising a child and you are jumping them perfectly!!! A 2 year old doesn’t need the option to choose what his dad is teaching him that the dads job!!! All kids will cry and be whiny!!! It’s the parents job to show security and comfort to the child!!! The people complaining have zero lives, and their kids run their lives!!! that’s why they’re so miserable!!!! it’s so funny how most of you think the dad is forcing his child. Y’all have no brains!!!! and I’m pretty sure you guys ask your young kids that are probably five and younger what they want to do with their lives, even though they have no idea of what they want to do!!!!! I can’t wait until y’all kids get older and shit on your heads and you guys just agree with it!!!! to the dad doing an awesome job. Keep up the hard work it’s not easy but one day you will be very thankful.!!! haters will always hate on progress.

    As a father this was incredibly disturbing to watch. Kid is obviously having zero fun, but dad kept pushing and pushing and pushing while the poor kid is crying the whole time screaming "ALL DONE, ALL DONE". Gonna traumatize your kid away from the sport, dad. Its gotta be fun, ESPECIALLY at 2 years old. That's kid coaching 101 stuff. Its cool you're trying to get him out there, but reel it back a bit and let the kid do whatever is fun for HIM. It will payoff in the long run.

      I completely agree with your comment. The kid didn't seem to be having any fun at all. Most kids are not whining and crying when they are having fun. I know the dad meant well but his kid wasn't ready for this just yet. Maybe in another year or so, that kid might be ready. Support your kid and don't force your kid. Who knows what sport this kid will grow up with and choose? It could be football soccer basketball or dirt bikes. In any event, it should be the kid's choice because sports are supposed to be fun. Dad meant well but he pushed that baby boy too far on that day.

      @JF2it Před rokem +2

      Of course your name would be Karen! 😂 there is nothing wrong with pushing your children/toddler. He is not forcing his will on anyone he's his Dad. In fact that's a lot of the problem these days with kids if they don't want to do try something or do something lazy parents are like perfect here's a tablet/tv and off they go to do what they want. Will your child sometimes push back of course but in the long run it's worth the little push as long as your not living through them. This teaches confidence and bonding time can't be replaced. Majority of parents won't realize this until it's to late and they never get that time back. It's always great when the select few know what's best for everyone, you were probably first in line with your toddler to get them the jab💉. Stay in Florida KAREN and worry about what's best for your own instead of others.

      @@lilphitz99 It did didn't it. My bad, I don't understand someone telling a parent how to parent. There are times that is necessary in cases where the parents are not involved at all with their children. When I grew up in the 90's early 2k's you could drive around and there were always kids playing outside. Now way to many parents are quick to shove a screen in their child's face for convenience. I don't think it's a good thing when you go places and see families, adults, and kids sitting together with their faces nose down in a screen. No interaction to busy glued to their devices. I drive around as an adult and you don't see a lot of kids outside playing or running around. It's crazy to me to think we lived on our bikes exploring getting ourselves to our own activities. I walked to school as a kindergartner up until the point we could stay at home by ourselves like 3-4th grade. Now people are besides themselves when they see such activity may even try to turn you in because they know what's best. People need to detox from devices and get out and enjoy the outdoors. I coached 3-4 grade flag football and I always wait until the last kid is gone to leave. I asked my last player where he lived while waiting for his ride he didn't have a clue. Blew my mind at his age we could get ourselves anywhere home from anywhere in town. I digress have a good day.
