I was hoping you would make and attach open shelving along the new teak cabinet to the ceiling, to create a divide/hallway! That would have been so cute! (Not that it’s not cute without it!)

I agree, the cabinet still looks a bit awkward and this would better integrate it. Or at least put an large upright plant on cabinet to create a bit more of a seperate space, something to draw the eye up

I was thinking itd be so handy to have a mirror there and then put it on hinges so it could swing open! Art would be sick too.
I was so hoping you’d extend the closet into the space and move the bedroom door in, I feel like you could have got so much more storage that way and you wouldn’t have had to cover the opening in the wall. Looked like the stopper for the small door you made could have been placed inside the wall facing the clothes then you wouldn’t have had anything jutting out from the wall. Seems like you like it though so I’m happy for you! Making closet changes has always made clothes feel like new for me! :)

…ditto….thought maybe there would be a little hallway into the bedroom…enclose that whole square space and incorporate the wall cubby into the closet…add a simple bifold door similar to the bathroom door…granted, a lot more work but the closet space would double - and be closed off….
I love how you made it work with the awkward space you already had rather than tearing it down & building a new closet. This is a realistic DIY & shows how to get creative without doing a complete gut
It is definitely an improvement, but here's what I would have done differently:
I would have taken the whole space down to the studs and extended the closet out into the bedroom (including the area where you have the dresser and the weird wall hole). In that way, there would be a short hallway into your bedroom (that is the back of the new longer closet). The walls in the short hallway could have been gallery walls or covered in a cool wallpaper. With the new, much longer walk-in closet, I would have installed a pocket door that matches the door on your ensuite bathroom. Unfortunately, I think the faux shoji door that you made looks a bit DIY when seen in the same frame as the bathroom door, which is similar. I also would have paneled the new walk-in closet with cedar panels so that it always smells fresh, and it protects any woolens you might have. Into the weird square hole in the wall, I would have created built-in wooden shelving, but just make them not so deep. They would have been great to hold hats or purses on display.
Agreed. The space does nothing and could easily have been incorporated into making a much larger wardrobe
Close to my thoughts. Only I would have opened the wall to the funny space and put a hanger like she has. But it would be so much easier to get to not this odd hidden closet space you have to dig things out of.
This. That whole cubbyhole thing is so weird and it's still a ton of wasted space that does not flow at all with anything. and that dresser cuts off a walkway and interupts the flow too.
It seems like Becky stated that there’s a stairway behind the long wall in the closet, limiting what she could do with the cubby. She didn’t show how far down the cubby went, so could have another obstruction there, as well.

That’s exactly what I was thinking! Adding a piece of art would blend beautifully with the space instead of a window next to another door. It distracts me. Everything else I love including the window but for a different project

I saw a hack that I think would be very useful here - to use the shorter, kid sized clothes hangers for pants instead of the standard size. It helps a ton with tight spaces like this closet - the pants fit snugly on the smaller sized hanger giving you extra inches of space and looks nicer too. Lovely job on the makeover! It looks great!

My family/parents lived in Japan for 8 years and bought most of our furniture there. Any furniture pieces with a paper element has always been Washi paper rather than rice paper and we’ve replaced it over the years as it got ripped. It’s made of fibers, is more transparent, and normally has some more texture to it than rice paper but is still very strong! Sometimes it can be inlaid with leaves or flowers etc but we have always used a plain creamy roll. Not sure where it is sold in Canada but I think that is probably more what you were going for with the panel!

The paneling looks so great in the main closet that you might want to glam up the little one, too. If you ever want to make the closet bigger, you could just extend the whole thing out into your room. It would look great.
The wood panelling and track lights are so cool! I think a midcentury room divider above that cabinet would be a cool way to define the space even more. Amazing makeover as always!

I think there are ways to make this space more effective - but I LOVE how you decided to makeover the space. It's much more unique and has so much character and intrigue. You're so creative and I love your style, but mostly I have a deep admiration for how you commit to the vibes and use your ingenuity to bring your vision to life. You are seriously one of my favorite artists out there - and that's what you are! You make beautiful art ❤️

Have you considered making a grid pattern with extra pieces of wood on the 'back' of the cabinet? So it matches the wall door? I think it would add a lot of cohesiveness to everything 😊

You said the hole goes into the basement? It's probably a laundry chute then. So your dirty clothes go straight to the basement to wash
If it has an actual metal longing almost like a ac vent it might be a laundry chute. They’re the bomb if your washer and dryer is in the basement. The size is more like an old dumb waiter very interesting.

She said it the STAIRS to the basement directly under her, which means it's likely structural and can't be moved. If she cut a hole in the hole, her clothes would just land on the stairs. 🤪

I would definitely stain the bathroom door on the inside of the bedroom the same colour as the stain you’ve used to bring it all together! Other than that it’s amazingggg, I love it xx

Okay I have ideas!!!
1. So I like the cabinet separating the space but it would be so cute if you added shelves that run parallel to the cabinet. You could display decor, accessories, books, and maybe even some stack of cool tees or denim.
2) I would extend the sheet wall that you used inside of the closet to the other wall. Basically elongating the closet. You could still have the cute sliding door but I would create a whole new feeling
3) the little nook with the sliding door would be so cute if also finished in the sheet wall and stained. But an added thought would be adding shelving or some sort of organization for accessories or for makeup. Also the sliding door being changed to a mirror- that could be like a whole hidden vanity/ getting ready space.
THIS 👏🏼 I’ve never had this many EXACT same thoughts with a stranger before!! Like wow, I was thinking the same design edits as the reveal shots were rolling. Well said and great eye girlie! 🤗
Additional alternative ideas that snowballed from there…
1. Use that taller dresser/credenza (to the left of the door in one of wider room pans) instead To create an actual “wall/divide” top to bottom.
2. If keeping the shorter credenza in place, put the mirror on that wall behind it (next to the door) so it’s kind of like a dressing table and you can look directly across…..which could then reflect a nice piece of art (as others have suggested) over that little stairwell cubby space. Very boutiquey.
3. Throw some supports in that cubby space, more of that same paneling, and then install and slide out “trays” (slim drawers) for accessories (think ikea pax).
Obviously an all-out reno with new/moved walls would be great but I could understand that being a later project after just completing the bathroom.
Nevertheless love the commitment to this aesthetic and how it’s cohesively coming together. 😊

This looks much better, and groovier! Love the vintage pieces. I'd probably paint the inside of the funky cupboard so it looked less creepy inside, but that's just me. So glad you replaced the bedroom door for something much more appropriate. I love this series.

Have you considered doing a full new “walk in built in “ cupboard? If you ever could, try build it out past tiny cupboard and main entrance.
Anyway I would have placed the hanging rods on the small back wall and shelves on the side . Perhaps even vice versa . Some more space for garments and accessories.
Look there is many ways of doing things but it is what suits you and your needs. Maybe one day both of your closests would be on the wall next to the new bathroom door with a ottoman and cute dresser with all the accessories or get ready things and the closet you just build is something else ( winter cupboard/ gear cupboard…).
Just keep growing with your home!

I love this! What a great redesign without having to go to the trouble of tearing down walls and expanding the closet zone - the cabinet also uses up the empty space in front of your closet so nicely! Like a fancy boudoir to dress at, but also a great spot to hide little things like socks and shorts.
I was literally just planning a total reorganize of my small cluttered closet and 9x11 bedroom when i took a break to eat lunch and this video came up! Great ideas!
This makeover looks so good Becki! I love the cabinet divider, the wood paneling, the new/vintage track light system. I think your shoji screen idea and the track system for it is amazing, but I think it would have been even cooler if you made it to mirror the look of the windowed door you see being it (to your bathroom?). I also love the pendant light, but I actually think you should use it elsewhere because it's kind of covering up the cool track lights behind it.

That small space would be an ideal place for a hidden safe box to store expensive jewelleries,$$, etc. With an art / mirror to cover it.
Hi Becky, If you go to The Paper Place on Queen Street in Toronto, you will find the paper you want. They are very knowledgeable and there are oodles of choices. Would you consider finishing the inside of the cabinet closet? The other one looks soooo good, I just feel it would be an extra treat for you to have a well-finished interior of that space too. You could also add shelving above the unit outside the closet to make it look like more of a built-in, but it might make things claustrophobic. The lighting is amazing and I can't believe how resourceful you are! You are an inspiration for saving money!

People say "I hope you extend the closet" "waste space" clearly no idea how the budget works, or they don't closely follow the makeover journey from That 70's house series. Listen, they just did a big makeover on their bathroom, and now y'all asking for another expensive makeover immediately?

Hey Becky, I'm Japanese and I didn't even know what shoji paper was made from so I looked it up in Japanese and apparently most of it is made of regular pulp (for making paper) lol. Technically it's "washi" AKA Japanese paper - you might have heard of washi tape. Best bet is to search for "washi paper". Even then, modern Japanese shoji have a plastic coating over the paper because as you can imagine it's easy to rip or even bust through them like the Koolaid man (like in old Japanese historic films). Loved your idea! I think its great to see appreciation of other cultures and being open to learning. Peace XOXO

I think the wall hole closet was probably used for extra bedding and pillows. Just seems like a perfect space for it. Easily accessible when it's cold but not taking up space in the closet or dresser. And it's also a space I'd come up with to DIY if I didn't have storage for bedding.
Yes! Pre-80s homes had so many of these nooks turned linen closet/ winter closet/ hat closet! (70s homes not so much on the off season hat box storage but 1900s-50s yes!) Great point.
So many modern homes they drywall nooks without putting the frame and cubby door on it because it squares a room off and takes less time etc. & buyers find the space and then get so surprised by the "waste" or "secret room".
I love how you created the space outside of the closet incorporating it into the closet. I personally would have hung a full length mirror on that wall opening and put it on a hinge so it opens and closes and then add jewelry caddies to the dresser top and you have a whole area to "finish" or admire your outfit in your new extended closet space! ❤
Fantastic solutions. As for the rice paper, you can make it more transparent by rubbing some oil like baby oil into the paper (not edible oils). The space behind the rice paper looks like it doesn't have a floor, so you might become annoyed if stuff falls off the hangers. 😆Love how it all looks!

This looks amazing! I love the color of wood in the end - really changes the vibe of the area! I like how you repurposed the rods in new spaces vs throwing them out for something new. Also, I'm pretty sure washi paper is used for the shoji doors/dividers/windows! (I would also recommend the 'Washi Transformed' exhibit if you ever get the chance - I think y'all might especially like Horiki Eriko's Ishi/Tane series of lights)

I love everything about this❤, but my only "concern" is clothes falling of of their hangers in the weird space and then not being able to easily pick them up or forget about them because they fell of without you knowing. 😮
For the diy that is Japanese inspired there is paper called vellum. It's like a thicker version of trace paper but you can still see through it, it's at most art stores.
I love the stained walls, it really gives 70s glam. I also love the idea for the cubby hole, but maybe it‘s better suited for storing winter coats or the bulky, not often used clothes. Personally, i‘d store suitcases in there.
I think your closet would‘ve benefited from building a wall closing off the extension. You can hang a full-length mirror on it and storage for accessories. Also, it‘s absurd the amount of bulky lamps you have in that corner of your room 😂. I know it‘s not the aesthetic, but led strip lights are just better for the closet, and those lamps are too gorgeous to tuck away in such a tight space.
Great stuff! As someone who lived in Japan, the paper on the doors has no transparency. It will let daylight through, but you cant see anything through it at all. So without a light on in the small closet space, it will look the same as a traditional door in Japan :)
Also for the stopper piece, maybe it would be better to have glued it to the back of the frame of sliding door, so that it catches the bottom ledge of the opening when lowered down. Of course, it would need to be just low enough so that it doesn't also catch the top of the opening and be able to close fully. But I think it would look a lot sleeker to have that hidden.
I think a runner rug extending out to where the teak dresser is at would really add to that whole long entry space idea that you were talking about! 🥰 Plus bring in some color and texture to add to the vibe you’re curating here!

LOVE IT BECKY!! ❤ my suggestion is not budget friendly, but I thought it would be so cool to add a wall where the dresser is allowing for more hanger space. Or, adding a fluted sheet of acrylic to the middle of the dresser would be neat to give further division of spaces 💕 but it’s perfect as is! Love it so much
The small door is a laundry chute. My grandparents' farmhouse, built in the 1950s had one, but much smaller. They still had the old washing machine in the basement, with the mangle and the basins that were rolled out into the middle of the basement floor on laundry day. It was much faster to pop the laundry into the chute and have it land in the basement, instead of walking up and down all those stairs with it, especially when you had bedding to wash for 30 house guests. The laundry was dried on a long wire clothes line in the apple orchard.
Loooooove it. Gasped when I saw the stained walls to match the dresser, came together beautifully
Nice job. I wouldn't have all those breakables on the shelf over the bed though. We were visiting friends overnight the day a plane crashed. We weren't close to the airport but the explosion knocked a picture off the wall and the glass shattered. Thank goodness it was on the wall opposite our bed, not over the bed. Lesson learned. I have a picture over my bed but never any glass.
When ever I'd buy or thirft furniture; my Hubby would always replace the back cardboard piece with a nice plywood. Up-grading it to a more study and function piece.

in regards to the random mystery hole in the wall - some family friends growing up had something similar, and it was essentially used as a way to make doing laundry more efficient (throwing your clothes down this chute that leads straight into the laundry room). not sure if that’s what yours was initially intended for but the idea just crossed my mind!

Staining.
Wide foam brush (not roller).
Lay brush down put a dot near the foam on the handle.
- Dot is either the reaching stroke or the pulling stroke, you'll choose it just helps.
Once you load the brush it is designed to unload stain in your stroke, and then like wipe in your stroke back.
Dot keeps it consistent.
When staining a flat wall get like a 6inch foam brush for $3.
The transformation was pretty incredible and it’s a very unique and modern space now while still respecting the past. I need to dive back into my passion for interior design! 😊 The classroom in person setting tedious though.
Geez I thought it was great and I love it. It bothers me that so many people were suggesting their own ideas. And that is it just it. They are their own ideas. No DIY project should look or function the same. It all depends on personal needs, likes, and wants. (example: all hangers the same) just doing that in my closet made a heck of a difference. So paint the walls orange if you want. It is your choice. Also, while it will help you keep more organized there will be times when it gets messed up again, but now you already have it arranged which will make a lot easier to get things done.
I love this! As someone also trying to figure out how to make my tiny closet more functional, this is EVERYTHING! My only thought is what if you put a see through cube storage piece on top of the dresser to further separate that space? I’m thinking one of those funky mid century ones that are used so often as a half wall transition piece/space divider. But honestly love the idea of bringing the closet out to the room without closing it off!
Rice paper goes almost clear when you paint an acrylic matte medium or watered down glue (don't know if the glue may discolor over time though) I used the matte medium all the time with rice paper on collage. Also, if you don't mind the mini "closet" door not coming all the way down you could attach that small piece of wood to the back of the screen with a screw. It would just need to be attached low enough that it won't block you closing it when you push it up- probably about an inch and a half or so I'm guessing?

What amazes me is how beautiful you made the closest in just a few days! Everything you did seems doable for those of us just starting out. I need to cover the walls in my guest bathroom (there are three layers of wallpaper, the first stuck to the sheet rock and is not removable), so we are thinking about putting up paneling, adding trim like you did. The problem is cutting around a window. I also loved what you did with the hole, although I wonder how far down it goes if you happen to drop anything? The rich color of the stain and the piece of furniture are amazing!!

I like the added cabinet - it does extend the space. You were fortunate to find one with a finished back. The lights in the closet are too much, however. You’d be better off mounting a few more of those motion sensitive lights (I have the rechargeable ones that are magnetic - you just mount the metal plate). The small lights are enough to see everything in the closet without waking a still sleeping partner. They also don’t require a switch to be flipped, and they wouldn’t overwhelm the space like the current ones do. Personally, I’d have opened the weird space above the stairs to make it more accessible (a bigger opening would help. Hanging the bar from the ceiling was something I hadn’t thought about, but I still think that space could be better used.
I love it so much, all that’s missing is a cool runner rug. I think you could also put a hanging rail above the teak cabinet if you need more space or to display your weekly outfits. Go Becky ❤

You should add a Mid Century room divider on top of the cabinet! It'll will create a wall and I think that would perfectly tie the space in. I diy a mini wall using an actual wood room divider, and hung it from the ceiling using screw in hooks. Either way I loveee this. I'm a retro lover myself, so I really look forward to your videos for inspo! 🤎

I'm currently working on a "kitchen island" and using a dresser - so, that has left me with the same issue as your dresser not having a finished back. My plan to get around that is to either finish the back with a tongue and groove or to do a raised stencil design on the back. I think it will be great. I agree, that sliding door for the stair storage nook was brilliant - well done!

Maybe I'm crazy but I would have covered the hole with a large floor mirror mounted on drawer sliders. So you could check your look in the mirror, and to access the hole you just push the mirror to the right to open it.
looove the vibe, the dresser divider is so smart. If the sliding door gets annoying, a floor length linen curtain could be cool! I did that to cover a small closet inside my main closet - looks like it’s a window and somehow makes the room seem bigger!

Great choices. Great learning moments. I think you guys are so bright that people expect you be know it alls but you're so great for showing the developing of new skills. Ofteb things people say they would do, is something they have never even done, so I really appreciate how accepting of strangers ideas happens here too.
These projects take so much time and you make such fun choices.
I think in a dressing area I totally dig keeping it open, not just expanding the closet so its less claustrophobic but also clean/restful from other vantage points in the room. (My surfaces are puled with clothes but I have goals of simple...😊)
1. I would love to see a full length mirror maybe an atomic/ 40s/ omeba / square oval.
2. A runner or oversized large rug? So hard to get right but something might work for all of yhe traffic going on there.
If it was me I need a non bathroom space to sit and do my hair and makeup (without humidity interfering) so I would need a different cabinet and probably a vanity mirror and outlet in the room.
I like the idea of tambour where the dividing cabinet is and like on the dressing side could be a million lil nails for necklaces and jewelry. But not 💯 on if it is needed.
I love the sliding solution for the built-in cabinet nook turned closet rail.
I might have gone to the hassel of re-framing if somehow able to make the bottom ledge level with what is likely an uneven base of the winter-cabinet but thats moot if it isn't that big of a reach up with your particular items.
It seems a little crowded, but I think thats because the rest of the room wasn't involved yet for filming.

I love this transformation! Your home is so custom and suits you perfectly! Awesome before and after! And I think some of these comments are from people who have never done renos. Why create walls when you find something so perfect as that cabinet. Very retro and fits perfectly with your design.
is the "unexplored hole" (lol) a laundry shoot? in the 90s the american movies had this, and it fascinated me. now i think it is actually so useful, when you think that this goes from your room to your basement, where usually americans had their laundry room (according to the films, lol). would love that now! instead of a hamper that takes space, just a door on the wall and here it goes!
Since the slide door for the tiny closet in the wall seems a bit like a delicate solution, I would have probably used the closet probably more for things that I don't gravitate toward that often. You know, like storing winter clothes in summer or something like this. Other than that, the whole space does feel more open and beautiful and I love the shoji door idea!

I was imagining you raising the cabinet up and adding shelving much like you have in your kitchen/living area. That hanging back was epic for the tiny cupboard too, I was just sad it didn’t get a full paint out to brighten it up more
Try a piece of white silk stretched over your innovative sliding door. You should get the sheerness you desire.
For the little door, try finding a pull out clothes hanger! You can probably store all your incredible pants in that space :)

for that hole in the wall spot: i feel like you should build out a little box with the back wall a bit closer to the opening, and then do multiple shops! that way it's not too deep for you to be able to access things, and then have some open shelving for bags or other accessories!
