Thank God for this video!! We have a 7 week old chick that was not acting well so I wanted to get some sugar water in her to see if that would give her a boost. I was at a loss as to how to get her to open up to let me give her some by eye dropper. Well I googled and found this video. I learned 2 things, they don't have a gag reflex so if done wrong I could've killed her, and also learned how to do it correctly! We got several drops into her and boy did it work fast!! Put her back in the pen and she started eating really well!! Thanks so much for this video!!!
Really useful video, after one of our chickens stopped eating and drinking and looked like she was going to have a premature end, saw this and started giving her water and also pellets by hand at very regular intervals , will give her a little grit later too. Very early days but she seems to be getting a little stronger. What would be useful would be too know how much water to give a day. Whatever the outcome the experience has been really useful in gaining experience of handling our chickens. Thanks Clare.
Thanks for your reply Alan. Syringe feed her carefully until she is willing to take water herself, give 5-10mls 4 times a day (at least) more if she is happy to take it. Make sure that she is pooing as well, so that you can see that her digestive system is still working.
I owuld also dose her with Nettex's NutriDrops - a wonderful product, which seems able to revive anything which isn't already 6 feet under! It's a blend of nutrients, probiotics and energy, and especially useful for any poorly birds.
You'll have to come on one of my advanced courses - they're on the website and folks come to them from all over the UK :)

Be very very very careful when you give water in the beak. There are safer method to do that.

Good vid!!
What happened to chicken if water enter the windpipe ?
Does it matter what side of the beak you put the water in? How much water are you giving each time?
No, it doesn't matter which side, an you just drip in 3-4 drips; the main thing is to go slowly and let them swallow between drips.

I gave my poor sick turkey water via syringe and she's aspirating :( I feel so awful. I was so careful to just give her a few drops and let her swallow it herself, but now I hear gargling as she breaths and she's trying to cough , is there anything I can do? There's no vets that see turkeys near me
I just came home from the vet who saw out chicken. Said can't syringe unless you go over the whole that's at the bottom of the mouth. If you just syringe like shown there is a higher chance of aspiration.
Did she live??
