    Our guinea fowl broke his leg. We used popsicle sticks for the splint and followed all your recommended directions! After 2 weeks, our guinea is now fully recovered and reintegrated back into the flock! Thank you SO much for sharing what you know! Glad I found you!

    Thank you for the video! My 11 week old silver Lakenvelder got out and the dogs got her. Only appears to have a broken leg luckily. As a prior vet nurse I am familiar with splinting. How long should I crate her and what do I give for pain from home? I’m very hopeful to get her healed as I also treated her wet neck when she was just a week old.

    • @CotswoldChickens
      @CotswoldChickens  Před 4 lety +4

      Hello Lucinda
      Sorry to hear about your girl - I take it that you have treated her for shock - warmth, darkness and hydration. Some Nettex NutriDrops would also be brilliant as the B vits in that are calming.
      If the break is clean and not displaced, then splinting is straightforward with padding needed to protect their bony legs and circulation. On the advice of my poultry vet, we used Metacam for the pain, and then isolated her to restrict her movement for an initial 2 weeks. The bone started to set pretty quickly and she had a further 1 week restriction with the splint still on and then one more week with the splint off... just to make sure that she didn't do anything stupid when she suddenly had more freedom!
      Please feel free to ask any further questions

    I live in an area where any vet will suggest you put down an injured chick as opposed to treating or just not see said bird. My hen will not but any weight on leg or use toes. after a week of hoping it would heal on its own we created a traction contraption to keep her immobile with legs slightly extended underneath and supporting body. Any other suggestions for diagnosing at home would be great! Thanks for the video

      Hello Jess
      Sorry to hear about your chicken, I hope that it's getting better.
      It is very hard to diagnose at home unless you have some experience with livestock diseases and injuries. In the first instance, I would recommend finding a chicken-savvy vet in your area. Personally, we wouldn't recommend treating serious injuries like breaks at home and possibly causing pain to the bird. This isn't an instructional video, and we are lucky that Clare knows what she is doing, so the chicken wasn't in pain.

    We have a pullet with what looks like a dislocated leg at the 'knee' bend (the one right above the ankle). She was walking with her foot facing almost completely backwards.
    We've confined her already, what else would you recommend us doing? Does she maybe need a splint?
    There's not many vets around her that know what to do with chickens.

    • @CotswoldChickens
      @CotswoldChickens  Před 4 lety +2

      Hello Robin
      If the break is clean and not displaced, then by all means splint it, be careful to pad the inside of the splint so that it doesn't put too much hard pressure on the leg. She will need to be in a crate - see my video on broody cages for an idea of what's needed - for about 2 weeks. I would put it in the run so that she sees the others, and avoids too many problems on re-introduction. Best not to put another hen in with her as she needs to rest and not weight-bear on it. Be sure to put something on the roof of the crate to stop the others sitting on there and pooing on her.
      Good luck, Clare

      @CotswoldChickens  Před 2 lety

      The break in the video is a bit of a 'lucky break' in that it was not displaced, and easy to splint if you have the experience. Generally, I'd advise that any breaks are taken to the vet. Like with us humans, any break near a joint is much more difficult to set and heal, usually requiring an operation and a pin or two.

    • @CotswoldChickens
      @CotswoldChickens  Před 4 lety

      OK, so you have 2 issues here:
      Firstly, and most importantly, you need to get your chicken to a vet as soon as possible, it will be in a lot of pain, and needs urgent medical attention. More than you can give it at home.
      Secondly, if this bird has mites or lice, then they all will; please ask the vet for a non-licensed spot-on treatment to treat them all. You will also need to clean out the coop thoroughly and spray it with Nettex's Total Mite Kill RTU spray, then powder with Buz Busters powder. Repeat this every 3 days until the infestation has gone, then use this alongside your weekly cleaning routine to ensure that they don't return.
      It is important to remain vigilant when you are doing your weekly clean-out and to treat every week. Your birds will need more than one treatment on themselves, and possibly a spray too - these are off-licence in the UK, so please be let by your vet in this respect.

      It is not a good idea to keep chickens in solitary confinement indoors - they are flock creatures and need company of their own kind, preferably outdoors. The welfare of a bird is of the utmost importance.

      Hello Yvonne, sorry to hear about your young bird what sort of age is it? This will help me to tell you how it needs to be treated.
      As I can't see the bird, it's hard to diagnose accurately, but in any case, I would recommend that you isolate it in something like a dog crate, with food and water, to restrict its movements so that it can't do any further damage. If you think that the leg is broken, and the fracture doesn't look displaced, then splinting or bandaging carefully may well help. Having said that, I am reluctant to recommend treatment for any injury that I haven't seen; you really ought to take the bird to a vet for a proper examination and treatment.

He naturally had bowed legs, but now that he has gotten too heavy, his leg is bending out way too much and it seems to be breaking. He won't put weight on it either. Is there any way to fix his leg and save him?

    • @CotswoldChickens
      @CotswoldChickens  Před 4 lety

      Hello, I am afraid not -- a lot of table bird breeds are 'designed' to pack on weight in a short space of time to get them ready for the table. Sadly this has a very negative impact on their structural health and they can go off their legs. The kindest thing that you can do is to cull him - I am sorry.
      If you are rearing meat birds, you might like to try crossing a traditional table breed with (say) an Indian Game bird, which is muscly but slower growing and produces a denser, more tasty meat.

It's not easy to tell without seeing the bird, but it could have either splay leg, where the legs splay out to the sides - you can find videos of this and also the remedy, which is easy to apply. Or it might have perosis, which isn't fixable. If you're not near us in the UK so that I can see the bird, I would suggest that you take it to a chicken-savvy vet.
      Hope that this helps

    Hey I really liked the video. Do you have any experience with baby chicks? We got three and unfortunately one got attacked by a cat. We weren’t able to see exactly what happened. We heard a very distinct cry from them and when we got to the scene all three ran away and the cat was left there and we shooed it off. I don’t the severity of the injury but we immediately noticed a limp. It has gotten better but she still has this waddle. She mostly keeps to herself. She still eats a bit of feed but she doesn’t scavenge for bugs or anything. The other two have become flighty and do these quick darts from place to place. She occasionally preens but rarely. She mostly just stays in this ball and lays down a lot. When we try to pick the chicks up they still run but she doesn’t really move. I hope she hasn’t gone into a state of helplessness. It’s only been a couple of days, but I’m just wondering if she’ll fully recover and catch up in development with the other two. Thanks if you were able to take the time to read this.

      Feel down both legs, starting at the hip, very gently feel for possible breaks, hot spots or pain when you articulate the joints. Compare the legs as you go.
      I'm afraid that it's not easy for me to diagnose the problem without seeing your bird, but a good start is to isolate it in a crate with food and water (something like the crate in our broody video is fine). Minimise movement, examine her and see if you can get an idea of what's going on. If the hen in the video is the same breed as my BSL....I think I'll start calling her a "Jasmin" instead! Sounds way nicer than Sexlink! lol

      Hello
      I'd like to help you, but it's impossible to tell what the problem is without seeing it. Is the cut near the body, or closer to the foot and how long is the cut?
      I would suggest that you bathe it to assess the damage, and then clean it with some antiseptic spray, like the Nettex one. If the wound is longer than 1cm, then you ought to take the bird to the vet, otherwise, dress it and assess it in a couple of days. If the other birds are pecking it, then you will neeed to isolate.

      Broken toes aren't uncommon, and like when we break our own toes or fingers there's very little that you can do. Provided that it isn't setting crooked, I would use a large-ish pet carrier or medium dog crate to confine her movements so that she isn't jumping around and it sets better.
      It's hard for me to tell without seeing her, but if you are at all concerned, then i would take her to a chicken-savvy vet.

    I don't feel any swelling, but it definitely feels twisted out of place.
    She's about 4 months old, and I think this might have happen from her slipping on laminate floor. (She's more of a house chicken, and she ended up this way over night so we don't really know what happen.)
    Do you know how we could maybe help her?

    • @CotswoldChickens
      @CotswoldChickens  Před 7 lety

      It sounds as if it could be a break, but I'm more inclined to think that it's possibly dislocated. It's not possible to tell without looking at the bird, but you should take her to the vet soonest.
      You are quite right; chickens and slippery floors aren't compatible - I would keep her outside where she's more at home :)

      You can fix a dusk's leg in the same way, so long as the fracture isn't displaced. However, unless you have plenty of experience, like Clare, then we would suggest that you take it to a poultry vet for assessment and treatment.

      Unless you know what you are doing, we really would suggest that you take your chicken to a vet for treatment, otherwise it will be in considerable pain.
      We are lucky in that Clare has considerable experience handling and treating livestock, particularly chickens, so ensures that they are medicated and treated with care. This s not an instructional video, and we would not suggest that you attempt this treatment unless you are experienced.

      Hello Melissa
      Thank you for your video - I have looked at it and can't see - from the footage - what the problem is; I would need to examine her. Was the vet a chicken-savvy one? Often regular vets know very little about Avians, and may mis-diagnose or even miss a problem.
      How long has she been like this? If she's been limping for some time, then it may not heal any further now.
      Without being able to see her myself, I would suggest that you restrict her movement for a while - put her in a crate (see the broody video) or something to stop her from moving around too much so that she can recover. Leave her in this for 4 or 5 days, but put it in the run so that she can be with the others. Let me know how she gets on.
      Do you have a pecking problem as well?

      I am sorry that you feel that way Phyllis
      There are many chicken ailments and conditions which can easily be treated at home. Unless you are competent and an experienced livestock owner, I wouldn't recommend treating any complicated breaks at home yourself. This is the job for a vet.
      Sadly, quite a few of the people who post on here have been allowing their poor bird to limp around in pain for some time, which is absolutely not tenable. If you don't have access to a vet, which would be unusual, then I'm afraid that the poor bird should be humanely despatched as it would be cruel to allow it to remain in pain.
      I hope that this answers your comment

    • @phylliskirkby9716

      do you even read your posts? it is not UNUSUAL for vet access in many areas of the us. there are none here that will see chickens and even decline to euthanize them. Yes most of us aren't stupid and know that the chicken may be in pain but we want to help if possible that WHY we turn to videos for help, ideas, and others who may have experienced the same issue. yeah quite a few of the people of post on here have birds limping around in pain that is WHY they turn to youtube and other sites. I do happen to be an experienced livestock owner but with large animals, cows, horses, etc., only turn to videos to see what others have experienced and found different ways to help, I realize that you are covering yourself with take it to the vet stock answer, but almost every post informs you that THERE ARE NO VETS that they have access to. that was why I commented. its no help.
