  • Our objective was to climb the highest point in Wyoming: Gannett Peak. We trekked into Titcomb Basin and set up base camp. On the early morning summit attempt, my climbing parter Royce got altitude sickness atop Bonney Pass. So I scrambled up to the top of Miriam Peak to watch the sunrise on Gannett and surrounding peaks. Insane amounts of mosquitoes below 10,500 feet. Overall a great trip and beautiful place.

I was in Titcomb Basin in early August, but never got up onto the surrounding peaks. You got some beautiful shots from the heights! While we were there, we had a major thunderstorm roll in and outran it (mostly) back to Little Seneca Lake. It mostly just cooled us off. You are right about the mosquitoes, especially around the lakes. I was praying for wind -- any time it slacked off they were swarming. Still, it was by far the most beautiful place I have ever hiked.

Been there. Done that. Most amazing experience in my life. It was in 1980, before wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, so it must have been coyotes we heard singing at night. The mosquitoes were nothing for us denizens of the Great Lakes. We should have paid better attention to the vertical dimensions on our map. We got as far as you did, with the intention of going to Gannett Peak (the tall boxy one). The horizontal distance wasn't far at all, but we would have had to go down several hundred feet, then up again, even more, then back to our base camp near yours by the lake. Too much. We only gave ourselves a single day to hike back to the parking lot (22 miles). Easy, because it's all downhill, right? Wrong! Every step was a shock to the feet and gave downward momentum to the weight on our backs. Don't do it! We hiked 2 days to get to that base camp. We should have done the same for our return trip. The pain was well worth it and forgotten, but never the sights or the memories of the exhilaration.
