my best friend is a doctor and my girlfriend is a tattoo artist and they both say that men have a much lower pain tolerance than women... i have always felt like women take pain much better but now i know for sure it's true.
Does he have any tattoos? If it's his first he's just cautious about the pain since he doesn't know how it feels like. I was kinda scared when getting my first, but ended up quite enjoying the feeling lol

people like ms patty were the reason some kids in my elementary class got fed. always kept a sandwich, granola bars and cheese-sticks in a drawer in her desk. technically theyd still feed u school lunch without money but theyd start hounding you every day at checkout and send letters to ur house. high school was worse cuz they started withholding celebrations n shit. super embarrassing and upsetting. i was lucky i ended up qualifying for free lunch but it sucked having to reapply every single year. by high school i just wouldnt eat at school cuz every day it was 5$ and i didn’t qualify anymore.
sorry for ranting i just feel very strongly about free lunches for kids.
I had lunch ladies who did the same for me and others throughout my 8 years in one school district. They didn't get fired, and I always told them how insane it was that a school was charging kids money to eat the food there. It should've been completely subsidized by the budget, and they would always remind me that as I grow up I'll learn even more insanely stupid things and they couldn't wait to hear about it lol

I grew up in Texas and I was in the bracket of kids who weren’t allowed to get free lunch. I remember trying to go through the lunch line with a tray because I had no lunch & the lady would take my tray from me & I would walk away with no food. Not to mention it would be highly embarrassing. Every once in a while, an old lady that was working the machine where you put your ID number would let me pass & I would get to eat that day. I always wanted the cafeteria pizza, probably had it once. Never realized how sad that was. I felt like I was breaking the rules trying to sneak through the line with my friends who tried to create distractions for me.
i cant imagine that especially as someone who has social anxiety. that kind of embarrassment in general crushes kids, i’m sorry u had to go through that. at our school they were discrete about it, they would just add it to a balance owed and they didn’t really press for payments back. but it was a nice district so i guess this kind of thing depends on how well funded the school is. no kid should be denied food though, no matter what.

I didn’t know what to do and I silently cried in line I couldn’t find a area to seclude myself, I panicked… and as I was silently standing there frozen and crying this elder lady with beautiful white hair came and hugged me and said “I’ve reported her mama, let’s get you some food ok.” And she brought me food, and the next day she brought me McDonald’s 🥺 I’ll always remember her! It’s so sad how the system has treated us. Now regardless if my babies school gives free lunch, I pack a extra little snack because I can’t ever imagine my baby going through that it’ll Hurt me so much more and I’ll rage!

For the tattoo pain, Cam is right. A good general use technique to mitigate pain is to embrace it: by embracing it you'lll actualy minimize it, realizing it is not so bad. It's a self-suggestion trick.
It's the opposite of fearing the pain so much that it amplifies it.
Agreed, you can't fight the pain, it makes it worse. Just gotta be cool and breathe through it

I didn’t tell many people this but Ethan is part of the reason I lost weight when I started college. I’m 6’2 but I was 230 and I always hated how I looked and last year when I started college I remembered Ethan going on his weight loss journey and it was nice to relate to someone in a similar situation. Now I’m 185 and much healthier and not only do I feel better about how I look, I feel physically better and more able to do things. Anyways thanks Ethan for helping me push myself to be healthy 👍

Every 6 weeks I get an infusion for the same autoimmune disease Ethan's mom has and before insurance it costs $46,000. Tens of thousands of dollars for something medically necessary. The healthcare situation in our country is wild. An emergency room visit in 2022 ended up sending my husband and I spiraling into debt, eviction, and now bankruptcy. $18,000 for one single visit wasn’t covered by insurance, and our finances were ruined. Double income both working full time, still not enough 🤷🏼♀️
I am covered in tattoos and one of my first tattoos was a 5 hour session. Having a room full of people to talk to and a whole show to keep you occupied will for sure be a great distraction from the pain. I think you can do it!

Before I had my first I had so many people tell me it'd hurt that by the time I got it, it wasn't that bad.
Uncomfortable sure, but it's not like a kick in the balls or anything. A good bruised shin is worse.
also heavily tattooed person here, and while I hear you all, I just can't help but think of the period simulator. I use something similar to help with period pain (basically just a TENS Machine) so between knowing that feeling and Ethan's reaction to it, and then having some black and grey realism pieces myself, I just don't imagine he'll be able to sit and coherently do the show for that long 😂. I know everyone has a different pain tolerance and even how they feel in certain places getting tattooed varies from person to person, but I just can't see it. That delicate realism is going to be a lot of working the skin over and over. I think he'll just be yelling the whole time.

Sophie’s team stayed silent for awhile. A lot of fans came with receipts too of all the times she’s talked about how she’d rather just stay home. And her old habits while filming GOT. there’s also this video of Sophie talking about asking him to spend time with her and how he sees it as a prison. It looks like his team didn’t plan out the smear campaign very well.

I thought he’d do a smaller black line work cartoon version of Shredder. I don’t know how shaded photorealism ages, but always something simpler might stay less ‘muddy’ over time. Have no real knowledge about all that though. Whatever he gets, I hope he Ioves it. :)
@@AVspectre if its done well with enough blackwork to hold clear lines, it can age pretty well! However it can absolutely go the way of those really wispy soft micro tattoos - with little to no bold depth, a design can go from "delicate" to flat vague shapes pretty quickly. I've seen some incredible photorealism age beautifully and then some very soft pieces look like butt a year later. I think he would be much better with a lil line work of him.

My dad owns a tattoo shop and I’ve spent the last year getting a bunch of tattoos in different places, so here’s some advice for Ethan’s first time:
-There’s NO WAY Ethan will be able to go the entire 5 hours for the entire portrait and make a watchable podcast. I recommend doing the outline in one sitting and the shading in a second sitting. Once the artist starts going back over the lines it really starts getting rough, especially because (like AB said) your adrenaline runs out.
-The lidocaine cream works SO WELL. I’ve only ever used it for my inner arm where the skin is super sensitive. I felt basically nothing until the shading and even then it wasn’t nearly as bad as going in raw. I recommend caking it on between 30 minutes and an hour before you start and covering it with plastic wrap. You’ll feel next-to-nothing. Ethan said “the cream is bullshit” a bunch of times and I promise it’s not. It feels like cheating.
-Without cream, I really doubt Ethan will be able to make a watchable podcast. His brain is going to be so scrambled the entire time. I like what Cam said about being present with the pain, that’s what I do too, but I can’t talk much when that happens, and I definitely wouldn’t be messing around on my computer.
💯 for a watchable podcast, outline would have be smart to knock out as photorealist tats are ALL shading.
Don't compromise the size or quality of the tattoo for us, king; we'd still love a 2nd podcast.

Being one with the Pain was key for me, they were shading over my spine and I'm a thin person
I've sat for 4-5 hour sessions and have talked the entire way through (just having a lil silly convo with my artist) 😆 like yeah sure, it hurts but I'm very much coherent lol.
I realise that not everybody is going to be able to take pain very well but it's kinda funny to hear them talk about it so seriously and planning ahead 😆

I have almost every part of my body covered in tattoos. Ethan, I would plan for the crew to carry the show and just check on you occasionally. If you are trying to go for 5 hours you need to conserve your energy and you for sure won’t want to be talking or thinking. It’s a good idea to get into a calm zone. Maybe have headphones for music. Be sure to have some sugar and carbs on deck so that you don’t get lightheaded and get a good night sleep and be fully hydrated. Don’t be embarrassed to tap out. Plan a ride home too, you won’t want to drive after.

The only reasonable advice. Chat suggesting ketamine or even thinking about talking or sedation is ridiculous. He shouldn’t be trying to talk or even think much unless he wants his tattoo ruined. Hopefully he just powers through it sober without doing the show. Let the crew run it.

As someone who's sat through tattoos as short as 15 minutes, and as long as 9 hours, I think you'll be fine. Dan was right saying pain is a right of passage, it's an important part of the process. Some tips- Have one FULL MEAL a few hours before, and a snack right before you start and bring one of those multiple litre water bottles to just down the whole time. Bring sugary drinks & lollies- you'll need all the stamina you can get. You HAVE to treat it like an open wound, at least for the first two weeks- so get as much sleep as you can, keep it covered, re-apply cream the minute it feels dry, and make sure it doesn't come into contact with any concerning bacteria such as sweat, and for the love of god don't get it sunburnt!!
I started my weight loss journey with Ethan probably around a year ago now and I was almost 5’3 and 240 pounds (too close to the song for comfort) but I am now 60 pounds down and so happy both Ethan and I have seen results!! It’s always nice to reflect on the past and see where we’ve come because I definitely have the same problem of having thinking I’m a chunky monkey now and thinking I wasn’t that fat back then. Glad we got to look at that together!!!!!!

tattooer here! if you’re trying to do the tattoo in one session the numbing cream is not the move. the best one i tried still wore off after an hour and a half. and the pain is SO MUCH WORSE when you do start feeling it more because the skin is so tender already and it feels so much worse. if you really wanna go the numbing route talk to your artist about the shot. in my area numbing shots aren’t a thing for tattoos lmao. i’ve always heard it as a thing only rich people do

My first tattoo session was 4.5 hours (a full outline and some shading on my chest, shoulder and upper arm - the color was added a month later). My pain tolerance is quite low. I had to take about three 10-15 min breaks from the pain. What made it more bearable was my tattoo artist applying witchhazel when we paused. I don't know how common a practice that is, but it is _so_ soothing! It hurt like crazy when she started up again, but no more than it already was. Good luck!

Tattoo numbing cream absolutely works. The brand I used when I got my ribs tattooed was Painless Tattoo. In the directions on their website they say you must apply the cream and then plastic wrap the area for 45 minutes. And brother. It was dead numb for 5 hours

Ethan, I have two tattoos on both my upper arms where you want your portrait of shredder. They both only took about 3 hours. For me at first the actual tattooing just feels like pressure, as AB said, your adrenaline is pumping for the first 2 hours. It does start to get uncomfortable around this time but push through. my biggest advice is to not take any breaks as this gives time for the skin to actually realize that you are carving it with ink. You love Shredder, it will be easier to think of him and why youre doing it when it starts to get painful

I'm a tattoo artist! My best advice is to remember to hydrate and eat plenty before your tattoo, moisturize the area you are getting tattooed every other day before your appointment, ask your artist if they're okay with you guys filming (it can stress out artists sometimes), and remember to breathe and chill throughout the process.
It feels almost exactly like a cat scratch on a sunburn, but it's a mind over matter process. If you feel like you need to take a break, let your artist know. Don't push past your pain threshold because it can be damaging! Most tattoo artists prefer a quiet environment, so I'd consider headphones with a mic haha. Cheers Ethan! You'll have fun!!

I have eleven tattoos so far, mostly on my arms. Behind my ear was actually the least painful, and the wrist has been the worst. I think it's so sweet that you're getting such a meaningful tribute to Shredder. ❤ I honestly wouldn't suggest getting your first tattoo live. 😂 You should be in the most comfortable position possible and take breaks for drinking water/the bathroom/stretching your limbs. Sometimes having to hold still and stay in the same position is honestly more uncomfortable than the pain. You should be super hydrated and eat a decent meal beforehand, and bring a blanket or cushion to your session!
