They are a shady company owned by another shady company, who have a vested interest in data collection. Half of the VPN's are just fake proxies, use ExpressVPN if you want one. @jasonklein4376 Před 3 lety +53

    A few things to note:
    1) It's not cheap but it's not crazy expensive compared to other capable platforms. The F-35A (the version Israel purchased) costed the USAF ~$82 million each in 2020. That's a very similar cost to a 4.5 generation fighter in the F/A18 Superhornet and the latest F-16 models.
    2) The real advantage of the F-35: SENSOR. FUSION. The amazing capabilities of the F-35 allow it to act as forward air controllers for other assets such as guiding in missiles launched by submarines while being undetected. They also have amazing jamming capabilities with their radar being as effective as dedicated EW aircraft in some circumstances. This is where the F-35 pulls ahead of the competition and I'd really appreciated it if Covert Cabal talked about the sensor fusion capabilities a lot more!

    • @DragoBoss
      @DragoBoss Před 3 lety +1

      IIRC, he did talk about it in one of his earlier videos. Sensor fusion isn't something that only the US has, although it is ahead of others at the moment.
      As for the price, it's not just about the price of a single jet, it's also about logistics. Tech teams need way more time and dedication to make an F-35 ready for action than it takes them for an F-16. RAM needs to be applied to the jet, because its design alone isn't enough to make it as stealthy as marketed. This takes time and it also increases the maintenance costs, as well as making maintenance more difficult. High-tech isn't cheap and it's not easy. Otherwise, everybody would be doing it. The Russians have the same problem with the Su-57. It simply doesn't fit their military doctrine. That's why the RuAF prefers the Su-35. It has all the advanced sensors and avionics, but it doesn't require as much attention. And it's the same reason why the USAF is getting the shiny new F-15EX.

      Not totally the same, battleship's problem is at its core not with the stealth fighter which problem is component (price). Of course, it's more expensive but it also opens more option for the attacker which 4th gen simply can't do it without lost even more than 5th gen (especially pilot). Stealth is just another tool, the new tip of the spear to help break enemy defend first before other, more venerable assets get in.

    • @Aaron-wq3jz
      @Aaron-wq3jz Před 3 lety +4

      @Drew Peacock any drone with effective ew suites, loitering capability and all the bells and whistles you just asked for is going to cost as much as a missle anyway and even if you go for the cheapest possible drone, which is buying one from the store and strapping a grenade on it it can be taken out by a cheap shot gun round, military airbusrts round or flak used back in WWII. They can also be shot down by Lasers which are getting cheaper by the day and electronic pulse weapons. It would be more effective to try and make a glide bomb with cluster munitions that disperse far away from a target but are guided by the most basic flight controls. Or use small diameter bombs shaped to not reflect radio waves without adding stealth coating.

    • @Aaron-wq3jz
      @Aaron-wq3jz Před 3 lety +1

      @Drew Peacock I'm not sure you understand. Just about everything you said should be on the drones are already on missles and glide bombs. We have surveillance drones and attack drones right now that cost more than actual fighter jets. What you are suggesting is basically a missle with different propulsion systems and made more complicated by giving it the ability to RTB

    • @Aaron-wq3jz
      @Aaron-wq3jz Před 3 lety

      @Drew Peacock actually yes glide bombs can attack mobile targets. IR imaging and other targeting systems can the guide bomb/missle track a target by itself and the plane that launched it can use data links to feed it targeting info mid flight. We've had missiles that do this for 40 years glide bombs that do that for 25 and the SDB II can track moving targets aswell and only costs around $30k-$45k. In order for your drone idea to work the drones have to be able to fly at least 1000 miles and cost less than $250k then we have to engineer recovery systems for bombers which would add to the cost and having bombers loiter would waste fuel and be in danger of interception. If you ditch the bomber recovery system you have to double the range.
      HARMs are already effective as they should be, they can air burst over targets and the decoy radar idea doesnt make sense we already know what chinese and Russian radars "sound like" and making a decoy radar is a waste because if you'd ad a few parts you can just have a real one. Half the mission of HARM missle is to force enemies to turn their radars off so we can get closer and kill the site with glide bombs and cheap SDB II.

    I find that people tend to forget that the F-117 that was shot down flew in a known attack path which had enemy radars locked on and expecting it. It also flew without it's electronic warfare escorts, further enhancing the risks that it took. Modern 4++ gen fighters come with ECM capabilities either built in or in a pod. The F-35 has ECM capabilities built into and could fly with other Electronic Warfare aircrafts and work with AWACs for missions that requires stealth.

    • @itspersiangulfmoron.repeat2242
      @itspersiangulfmoron.repeat2242 Před 3 lety

      If they were stealth their path wouldn't be known no mater how many times they used it. ECM are a flaw for stealth planes, they make normal planes being spotted sooner let alone the plane over which you have spent millions to make it almost invisible. RQ-4 has the same/even better ECM since it lacked maneuverability but still Iran shot it down.

    • @kerblingtime
      @kerblingtime Před 3 lety +6

      @@itspersiangulfmoron.repeat2242 this comment shows a lack of understanding. ECM is only meant to break the enemy's potential for a good radar lock, forcing manual launch of SAMs which is ineffective. ECM however increases your visibly range by 2x. The path can be known even without the visible ECM pathing because of the multitude of missions flown prior can be traced by the enemy to begin with.
      Being spotted vs being targeted are two completely different things. Once you're spotted, you expect an air sortie which doesn't exist because in the case of the F-35s being supported by the F-22 would have already shot down the incoming aircrafts. Then lets say we have a combined strike group with F/A-18s and F/A-18G Growlers, F-22s, F-35s, F-16s, and F-15E or F-15EX.
      The most likely scenario is the F-35s penetrate enemy defenses and take out early warning and important fire control systems. F-22 supports the F-35s while also shooting down aircrafts at BVR. F-35s datalink with F-15EX and take out all enemy fighters BVR, F/A-18G is in-charge of scrambling enemy radar to confuse enemy on direction of attacks, numbers, and other ECCM (Electronic Counter Counter Measure, yes that s a thing). F-16s and F/A-18s and F-15Es are in-charge of delivering the mission package.
      In this scenario, an enemy like Iran would literally be obliterated because they can't even get a shot off. You can SEE but they can't fire. Even the S-300s and S-400s would have problems shooting down F-35s without proper targeting radars. F/A-18s can carry HARMs and shoot in the general direction of the radars blindly. This suppresses the enemy radar as turning on would risk a HARM locking onto the radar radiation.
      And say they do turn on and fire, given that they can land hits, the number of F-35s available would be replenished rapidly since they have been built to be mass produced.
      Capabilities combined with the ability to be mass deployed makes the F-35 almost omnipotent against low tech nations like Iran. But nations like China and Russia would have more ways to deal with it, although at a very high cost.

    Important point to note here is Iran was able to TRACK and then force land a stealth drone. That drone is a LOT stealthier than an F35.
    Long wave radars can detect stealth targets from a long way off but are not good for targeting them. HOWEVER if you have a number of these radars then advanced DSP can paint a pretty good picture of the target and you can guide a missile towards it. This coupled with active radar/IR missiles and your stealth plane is going to have problems.

    One of the most concise explanations there is without having to explain the signal processing or the physics of radar very well done. People don't really know what is meant by invisible it just means that sensors lose track of the object easier and make it harder to destroy. Of course the frequency at which targeting radars need to provide enough information to track is the frequency range that is most optimized for the stealth geometry and stealth material absorptive properties. Another is radar jamming which is very good on the F35 since a lot of air defense radars rely on radar returns from a ground radar which is stationary and more prone to jamming by the radar that just uses it to actively send incorrect returns in that direction. This mainly has been countered though given that information gathering sites usually sample from multiple radars and make multiple angle decisions to track the target along with active sensors on the missile itself or passive sensors that hone in on radar signatures in general.

      @@Kauppi2 Yes, of course stealth planes have a stealth mode for combat missions calling for it, and a mode they use general flying. Some may have multiple levels of stealth configurable depending on the situation, and then of course there's loadout. Even still, the natural shape of these planes makes it hard to spot them sometimes. The B-2 is notorious for disappearing off air traffic control radar screens even when it's trying not to be stealthy. China proudly reported intermittently tracking some F-22s on patrol over the Pacific a while back, and those F-22s were carrying very unstealthy fuel tanks, showing China's radar systems their side not their stealthier front, and probably wanted China to see them since they were on a mission to show the flag, so to speak. Intermittently. They only were detected intermittently.
      Anyway, they've definitely thought about it, and try to change up the signature and hide what the plane is truly capable of, but in a real war they'll be so much jamming and anti-radiation missiles and decoy drones flying about it's hard to imagine any air defense system is going to have an easy time of it even if they have clean data on the real thing. The idea that a single plane is going to go up against a single radar system in some lab-conditions 1v1 is absurd. Most real wars, the defending countries keep their radar systems off so as not to become targets, and the radars best able to detect stealth planes are big and immobile and easily destroyed in the first few hours. Stealth is mainly for surprise attacks at the outset of a conflict and doesn't matter much one way or another after that. The US likes to maintain first strike capability, so it makes sense from that standpoint, but I think it's obvious by now that the F-35 is trying to do too much and other specialized weapon systems can do everything it's designed to do, but better. Stealthy cruise missiles, stealthy drones, they're going to have much more optimized profiles because they don't need to dogfight and keep a person alive on the inside.
      99% of the F-35s going to other countries are going to only fly in training, and the other 1% will be interception of civilian aircraft straying off course because the pilot had too much to drink at the airport bar or got distracted looking at his iPad. The stealth is totally useless for them. It's probably a good thing they didn't get the good coatings. Besides the security risk, it'd be a complete waste of money.

    I read that the F117 was shot down because they kept opening their bomb doors at a predictable location day after day. So the shoot down wasn't they fault of the equipment but of the operator. Testing your doors at the same location everyday and thus losing your stealth is a sure way to be seen and shot down.
