Rules and Explanations
Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch. - Hry

You mixed up your thoughts. Normal does get stab. What you’re thinking of is due to oversight, glare and body slam cannot paralyze normal types.

I swear Raticate is a pokemon who seems OP when weilded by NPC trainers. Hyper Fang & Super Fang is scary at the wrong time.
It's a nuzlocke nightmare
They get it quite early - you run into STAB Hyper Fang before your starter gets anything stronger than Ember, Water Gun or Vine Whip unless you are significantly overleveled.
Alohan Raticate is just busted. A dark/normal type in Kanto? That thing is the best Pokémon in the game behind mewtwo or maybe some of the megas.
The goon with the level 16 Raticate in Mt. Moon was a full-on boss fight for my brother and I as kids! We were super underleveled and kept beating our heads against it until I finally won with Squirtle. My brother freaked out afterwards, and we learned what evolution was! Such a magical time in life!! 😊

The fact Raticate was actually underleveled for most of the run is pretty crazy. People really unnecessarily hated this mon back when this was current gen, dismissing it out of hand

Seemed to take a lot of experience to level up
in standard gen 1 play if you wanted a normal type you'd likely have access to clefable long before you could evolve a rattata. beyond that normal types easily get hit by status moves and can't do super effective stab damage for most of the game. so all the effort would be better spent on a nidoqueen/nidoking.
Many Normal types have the same or similar movepools since Game Freak tossed basically every TM at them so it becomes a matter of stat comparisons. You say it's "dismissed out of hand" when everyone else would just say that's a simple matter of statistical inferiority.
Its one advantage is early Hyper Fang, but Body Slam comes not long after and is a superior move. Tauros just does everything it does but with better stats and a slightly better movepool due to Earthquake.
No one hated Raticate, it just wasn't designed to be a permanent teammate.

Raticate learning water-type moves by TM actually makes sense. Their dex entry says they're very good swimmers, so I imagine they spend a lot of time in the water.
The only problem i had on my raticate run was when it ran out of pp for its water fun in Lavender.
Not to mention real life rats are capable swimmers too.
@@Toast_94 Raticate is heavily inspired by the coypu, a South American rodent that was introduced to Japan and thrives there. And wouldn't you know it, they're also strong swimmers.

Most of the Gen 1 Normal types can learn a strange assortment of special TMs, in fact most of the fully evolved Pokemon can learn random TMs you'd never expect in later gens

i remember using Raticate on my first run as a child back in the 90s. I basically just used whatever first 6 mons I found cause I could barely read and didnt understand the PC LOL. I still remember my Raticate using struggle all the way through the elite four and me just stuffing him full of potions over and over, good times
Raticate is a very underrated pokemon! It carries the early game for... well, pretty much every game in which it's available!
I remember using a Raticate against Morty in Gen 2 with Dig and completely wiping his team. It's a good all-round mon that can fill a role in about every battle!
In gen 3 with guts it can carry the league too

Would be interesting to see just how fast Raticate can beat gen 2 honestly. He eradicates everything with Return, and you can teach him Dig for Ghost/Rock/Steel types. Really funny how a Pokémon you can catch on the first route in the game can become stupid broken very easily.

@@youtube-kit9450 Human speedruns in Gold/Silver are done with Feraligatr. You're probably thinking of the Gold TAS which uses Raticate. Crystal speedruns (both human and TAS) use Raikou since you can get it really early as a level 40 roaming Legendary in that game.

Fun fact: You mentioned fire emblem Jegan being a throwaway unit in the late game, but a majority of the fire emblem characters the community counts under the Jegan archetype are among the best units, even in the game, by players shooting for efficiency. This includes FE6/7 Marcus, FE8 Seth, FE9 Titania, and funnily enough Shadow Dragon's Jegan. This is mainly because difficulty in Fire Emblem tends to be extremely front loaded, and Jegan units start with such high stats that even with poor growths their stats are usually good enough to at least contribute for the entire game. From an efficiency perspective, "good enough" is almost the only thing that matters

And then you have Frederick who is both really strong early game and has good growths, but all the units in Awakening can become broken due to how easy it is to grind levels.
I thought the consensus was that Seth and Titania were Oifeys, no? Since they have great bases and amazing growths

It's been done for Weedle on the unevolved tier. We can't do it for Magikarp (or Caterpie or Metapod) because it's actually impossible for them to finish the game; they can't hit ghosts. It's theoretically possible to finish with Weedle, but it would require such extreme odds that will never be seen in our lifetime.

Rattata (later Raticate) was one of my first Pokemon as a kid. Always thought it looked awesome and it was so easy to catch. Awesome Pokemon and so underrated. So glad to see it getting some love

I remember doing a Raticate run on my Pokémon Yellow as a child. I was really surprised how easy it was!
9:40 I know the Jagen archetype from Fire Emblem has gotten more known over the years, but a very competent player never discards their Jagen because their base stats are that good to keep around, kind of how most people stick to using the same pokemon unless a pokemon was by far their weakest. But with good strategy, One can use their weakest Members of their team to their advantage.
For pokemon, it's all about movesets and abilities. If a weak pokemon has top tier speed, it can setup for the rest of the team if possible. Meanwhile for Jagen, if they are not strong enough to defeat enenies, they can always chip and let others enjoy the EXP far more.

Ingame psychic is probably a little better but in competitive normal is significantly better

Starmie Slowbro Alakazam Jynx and exeggutor are all psychic types and are all great in competitive gen 1, the only good normal types are Tauros Snorlax and Chansey.

@@mattiamerlo2688 You don't consider Persian a good competitive Pokemon in gen 1? It's obviously not as good as Tauros, Snorlax, and Chansey (who are probably rank 1, 2, and 3 Pokemon in that order... all three are better than any legal psychic type), but it's pretty playable with the great speed, guaranteed crit STAB Slash, and Bubblebeam/Thunderbolt for coverage into everything that is not Gengar that likes switching into Slash. Normal and psychic are both downside free typings in gen 1 with no weaknesses that actually matter (hence the majority of most teams just load up on those two types), but normal is immune to Body Slam paralysis which is really good.
I don't know how you evaluate in-game (until jrose is done with the Pokedex I guess), but I do know that the better normal types, especially Dodrio, are generally considered top tier finds in rando very competitive with the best psychic types and the non-Mewtwo legendaries. Normal is truly outstanding in gen 1.
