Rules: (1) Only use the one Pokémon in Battle, others for HMs are fine. (2) No Items in battle (3) No Glitches* (4) Set Mode (5) No saving in the Elite Four (6) No evasion moves
Badge Boost "Glitch" Explanation: When you collect odd numbered badges the game boosts a stat by 12.5%. Brock gives ATK, Surge DEF, Koga SPE, and Blaine SPC (in game text is wrong). When any of your stats are modified (even by you using a move like Withdraw, or your opponent using Leer) the badge boosts are re-applied. So If you use Swords Dance, you also gain *an additional 12.5% in Speed/Defence/Special (on top of the 12.5% you were supposed to be getting). When you level up, the game corrects this error, and only the non-glitch 12.5% remains. Because of how difficult it is to avoid, I've allowed for it to be exploited, since opponents will spam Leer/Growl anyways, and this way battles are less random. Red/Blue are extremely buggy, so there's always going to be some glitches present, and because of how unavoidable this one is, it is allowed in runs, and considered more like a special Generation 1 mechanic as opposed to a glitch.

Protip: if your Gen 1 moveset is rocking two or more boosting moves, remember that they each reset their affected stat's badge boost to the normal +12.5%. In other words, using Swords Dance will cancel the extra ATK badge boost from all prior uses of Agility, and vice versa. Don't alternate if you can help it, and boost the stat you want to be the absolute highest first.

The AI isn't programmed to use Growl just because you used Swords Dance. Lorelei uses AI Routine Modification #2, which on the second turn prioritizes any move that does something other than just deal damage. But that applies to all four of Dewgong's moves.

  • @Iddjy
    @Iddjy Před 7 měsíci +59

So Lorelei not only has "good AI", which is the coloquial name for one of 3 AI routines NPCs can have, she actually has all 3.
The first is to prevent the AI from using a status move on a pokemon which already has a non-volatile status condition.
The 3rd is the famous and buggy "good AI" which favors super effective moves.
And the 2nd is the one that was responsible for Lorelei's Dewgong using Growl against Farfetch'd.
It is also quite buggy, my guess is that it was intended to encourage the AI to use stat boosting moves on itself or stat reducing moves on the opponent at the start of the fight, but what it actually does is favor a specific set of move effects, but only on the *second* turn of battle of each of its pokemon.
The moves favored by this routine are the following :
all stat boosting moves, all stat reducing moves, Pay day, Swift, Conversion, Haze, Reflect, Light screen, Transform, and all healing moves
Since Growl is a stat reducing move, it is favored by this routine, making it as likely to be picked as super effective moves, but since this routine works only on the second turn, that's why you will never see Lorelei's Dewgong use Growl on any other turn when Aurora Beam is super effective, because Aurora Beam is favored on every turn. This is also true of Rest.
So in conclusion, Lorelei's pokemon can all have their "good AI" derailed on their second turn by this other AI routine if they have eligible moves. Slowbro has 3, so it is very prone to it for example. This AI routine isn't very common, the only trainer classes that have it are : Super Nerd, Pokemaniac, Psychic, Scientist and Lorelei.

Juggler and Gentleman have it too (if the speedrun wiki is correct).
Lorelei and Pokemaniac are the only trainers that have both Good AI and the turn 2 routine.
I had a feeling something weird might happen to stop Dewgong using an Ice move, but then I thought that's just Yellow. I had no idea the turn 2 routine could override super effective moves until now.

@@impossibledream3973 You're right about Gentleman, I saw it in the code but forgot to list it!
Juggler is a bit of a special case, the class that has routine 2 is not used by any trainer, all the jugglers actually use another class, also called Juggler, but which has only the 1st routine.
Fun fact : the duplicate Juggler class is one of two unused classes, the other being the Chief class. It doesn't contain any trainer data, and is listed in the "Evil trainer" category (which is used to choose the pre-fight music). Make of that what you will. My guess is Chief was a beta Giovanni.

Just so you know accuracy decreases are easier to understand than you'd think, they're always less effective after the first because of how it works.
    -1 stage = 3/4 accuracy
    -2 stage = 3/5 accuracy
    -3 stage = 3/6 accuracy(1/2)
    -4 stage = 3/7 accuracy
    -5 stage = 3/8 accuracy
    -6 stage = 3/9 accuracy(1/3)
It's not that there's a decline in effectiveness after 3 uses, each one just increases the divisor by 1 which results in the gradually reducing effect(3/8 to 3/9 is obviously a smaller effect than 3/3 to 3/4 or 3/4 to 3/5)

According to bulbapedia in gen 1 they used slightly different multipliers, namely 66/100, 50/100, 40/100, 33/100, 28/100 and 25/100. I think you misunderstood what jrose was hinting at.
Imagine you know your mon can knock out the geodude with exactly 6 hits. You could either attack 6 times and get hit 5 times in the worst case ( assuming you outspeed ). Or you decide to set up one sand attack. Though you give geodude one more turn to attack, the expected value of received hits (assuming he always tries to attack) until you knock him out is now 66/100 * 6 ≈ 4.
Going for two sand attacks geodudes expected connected hit count goes down to 66/100 + 50/00 * 6 ≈ 3.67 so 3 or more likely four hits. For the next sand attack this number is 3.5 and for the fourth it goes up to ~3.507 again. Remember that the whole point of setting up sand-attack is to get hit as little as possible.

    • @realperson69
      @realperson69 Před 7 měsíci +5

@@Vigaberno You are correct! 2/3, 2/4, 2/5, 2/6, 2/7, and 2/8 are used in Gen 1, which mirrors all other stat stage modifications. These ratios are used in all future generations for every stat except accuracy/evasion.
For battles as long as the one against Geodude (26±3 turns), it actually makes sense to go for more than 3 Sand Attacks. If you're going to be attacked 8 or more times, then every Sand Attack is an improvement, even the weakest sixth. The accuracy of the incoming attack doesn't affect that 8-attack threshold, but we'll use the 95% accurate Tackle as an example:
      Attacked 8 times: 7.6 hits.
Attacked 9 times, but one Sand Attack was set up before the first attack: 5.7 hits.
Attacked 10 times, but a second Sand Attack was set up before the second attack: 4.91 hits.
Attacked 11 times, but a third Sand Attack was set up before the third attack: 4.53 hits.
Attacked 12 times, but a fourth Sand Attack was set up before the fourth attack: 4.34 hits.
Attacked 13 times, but a fifth Sand Attack was set up before the fifth attack: 4.25 hits.
Attacked 14 times, but a sixth Sand Attack was set up before the sixth attack: 4.21 hits.
In Gen 1, you can subtract 2 from the number of times you'd expect to be attacked in a battle without accuracy/evasion setup, and that's how many accuracy/evasion modifications it's worth setting up ON AVERAGE. Of course, the "expected" number of hits might be more appropriately considered as the MODAL result and not the average, but that's a piecewise function I can't summarize in text.

I've been watching these runs for a few months now, and I'm always super impressed. I attempted a no capture run a little bit ago, inspired by the minimum battles run you did in red. But I played FireRed, and I think I hit a few unnecessary battles accidentally, so I just kept with my fallback of no capturing. I completed that a couple weeks ago, and it was super cool, now I'm thinking about what the next challenge I want to do is. Your videos in emerald kinda tell me that I'm NOT ready to min battles that yet lol!

Given farfetch'd is based on the old Japanese story of a hungry person being lost and coming across a "duck bearing Leeks" which of course the joke being that that duck is carrying food the guy is going to eat along with it it's understandable that farfetch'd is meant to be a joke Pokemon, given it's based on a joke and all. The reason Lorelei's Dewgong uses Growl sometimes here is because Lorelei has the relatively uncommon AI Modification 2. This causes her to prioritize status moves on the second turn each of her Pokémon is in battle, apparently to the same extent that AI Modification 3 (aka "Good AI") prioritizes super effective moves. (For the record, AI Modification 1 strongly deprioritizes moves that inflict non-volatile status conditions, such as Toxic or Sleep Powder, when your active Pokémon already has a non-volatile status condition. Most trainer classes in the game have this.)

At the start you were saying you still need to do a ditto run, there is a game-breaking bug attached to transform you might want to keep in mind when doing the video:
If you use transform and the enemy has metronome or mirror move, don't ever use it. It will make it so you will never ever be able to use struggle with it again.
There is some bs increment/decrement of move PP going on in the background when using those moves, and in short it makes the game think you have more than zero pp on an empty move slot.

@@DisplayThisOkay yeah he's got no reason to use Fisherman Bridge for a few reasons:
      1. not getting Water Pokemon to Stone evolve
      2. Bike path faster for Speedrun
      3. Also Bird Fences and Fisher Bridge slower than a basic route to walk through, bit like Viridian Forest.
      4. he often saves trainers away to level up if he needs to, i think this is his hunting ground for leveling against Rival Fival
      5. so he doesn't use it to get to Koga and Blaine, but once he's grinding at chokepoint trainers then he'll double back and clear everything he has access to if he really needs to.
      6. but even then, Victory Road is usually more efficient and the Sea Route trainers south of Pallet Town toward Cinnabar are less time wasted than the farthest possible away corner from the Indigo Plateau on the map that's not the Power Plant.

The traded DUX is even better and would've been about six levels higher before the Elite Four, which would've gone a long way in hitting those speed and damage thresholds. I've seen it argued in tiering discussions that its main utility is as an HM bot, but if you let it ride its bonus exp. points to be a few levels higher than the rest of the team, it is very legit as a fighter

One thing this series is incredible at is teaching mainly metagame battlers like me how seemingly rubbish pokémon are actually super well thought-out and useful in the closed ecosystem of their own games. -Especially gen 1. Farfetch is not meant to be a game-ender by itself, but its early set-up and terrible stats teaches the player how to use said set-up moves to improve an otherwise inferior-looking Fearow clone into a monster.
All of this I just realised. This is amazing.

@@franslair2199not true, just look at onix. plenty of people have explained that onix is bad on purpose as a first boss for the player. it's extremely bulky but not very strong to teach the player about regular defense and special and super effective moves. if you try to ko onix with tackle it isn't going to be easy. but even if you use ember from charmander it does more damage even if it's not effective bc of stats.

@@otsokarhu9695 Swift and Bide are just handled differently in the game's code. Swift skips the final 0-256 roll, and Bide does not skip it. Presumably, Bide also ignores accuracy reduction in the 'Accuracy' part of the formula, which is calculated before the 0-256 roll.
Other moves like Haze and Transform also ignore accuracy reductions. I am not sure if they can get a Gen 1 miss though.

Hey Jrose, first of all this was a fun video, I recently installed the GBA Emulator for Gen-2 (Crystal) since I was feeling nostalgic. Here's a funny little detail that just happened to me while I was watching your video. I'm south of Ecruteak City, right below on the route where the three acorn tree's are at. Mind you, I was just grinding and training a little Dratini. After probably fifteen minutes, I deal with several Stantler, random ass spiders and Hoot hoots.
    Wait for it...
All of a sudden random ass Legendary Electric Dog shows up. Raikou, or whatever...so yeah, I guess mass slaughter (battling) draws the dog in. I laughed a bit, I just figured to relive my childhood when I shit my pants hearing the 'different' battle theme. Already got one Dog, time to catch the other two and find the legendary birds after I deal with Lance's goon squad. I might as well grind for the Dragonite for the fun of it. Sometimes I miss being able to play these games, it brings me back to days when things were simple yet fun when your imagination puts you in the shoes in a decently designed game.
