    Here we see a nice quirk of the gen1 stat XP mechanic. Stats in gen1 are not calculated after every battle, only on level up, usage of vitamins and withdrawing from PC. JRose must have gained just enough HP stat XP to get an additional hitpoint but the recalculation of the stats was delayed until the Calcium was used. That's why Tauros went to 164/165 HP.

    To add onto the opening description as to why Tauros is so anticipated: he is not just good in Gen 1 competitive, he is the KING, only edged out by Mewtwo. Required in every team, no question (if winning was your goal). Jinx and Executor were also staples, but Tauros was the absolutely indispensable slot. There wasn't a niche backup: there was only Tauros that could fill the fastest and hard hitting Normal type (which was insanely good in this gen, right behind psychic). IE: hyperbeam was a physical move that didn't make you recharge if you KOed the opposing Pokemon; crit hits were based on your base speed; etc

      And sadly a good deal of stuff like that doesn't necessarily carry over into a normal playthrough of Pokemon. Hyper Beam might be great in gen 1 competitive, but in a game where you're gonna be fighting dozens of pokemon between PP restoration spots having your mainstay move have 5 PP isn't great. I'm sure it'll be good in the Elite 4 where you face trainers that are actually challenging, but for the majority of the game not so much. And when Tauros' only attacks are resisted by the first gym it's already facing a major time sink at the very start.
      What is good in competitive is not directly translatable into what is good in a normal pokemon playthrough.

      Actually it's aa-kuh-nine, in most sources except one or two. Going purely by origin of the name, JRose's pronunciation is actually correct. Arcane + canine = Arcanine.
      So, Our K-9 run when?

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac Před 2 lety +8

      @@infinitas. Sure, however language changes over time. While Arcanine's name is a combination of those two words that doesn't mean that they're gonna be pronounced like that. Take the Lasgun from Warhammer 40,000. It's a conjoinment of Laser and Gun, but it's pronounced universally with a soft "a." So since the overwhelming majority of media pronounces it ar-kuh-nine without an awkward pause that makes it seem like you're trying to say two separate words, that's as far as I'm concerned the correct way to say it.
      None of which excuses how bizarre people are on the internet, getting worked up about pronunciations of fake animal names. Like, I just wrote the above paragraph but even I think the people correcting Jrose are being dicks. Yeah, he pronounced a thing wrong, get over it.

    I'd love to see a Snorlax run at some point. Despite being as slow as it is, between it's incredible attack stat, TM movepool, access to amnesia and just sheer tankiness it could totally be top teir material.

    • @Skarfar90
      @Skarfar90 Před 2 lety +36

      I too have a feeling Snorlax will be really good. Considering its amazing attack and HP stats. Even it's abysmal base-30 Speed can be worked around (it is actually faster than Slowpoke
      However, it does have a weak base-65 Special stat in Gen.1, but that's where Amnesia comes into play.
      Snorlax has a pretty decent starting move pool, with Headbutt (Base 70, 100% accuracy), Amnesia and Rest. and its level-up moveset is pretty good as well: Body Slam - Level 35, Double-Edge - Level 48, and Hyper Beam at level 56. It also has a very deep move pool, comparable to Mewtwo in this regard. It can learn pretty much all of the useful TM moves (Ice Beam, Blizzard, Thunderbolt, Earthquake and Psychic!), as well as HM03 - Surf.

      I would also love this.
      Inspired by Jrose I have tried it.
      Brock is still hard, you can't do min battles but with half moves and half struggle stats you can do it with only the bug catchers and junior trainer, after that you can do min battles,
      I prefer the amnesia strats for E4 because of badge boost and special working on attack and defense while being super effective against much of the E4 (Thunderbolt and Ice Beam/Blizzard just wins mostly) but I think physical with harden is also very viable.
      I didn't find rest strats that worthwhile but I'm a pretty aggro player.
      I would be very interested to see how Jrose handles it, there are so many ways to go with Snorlax, Brock is tricky but the late game is a very interesting run, there are also many options for Snorlax!

    • @darkfiredragon3410
      @darkfiredragon3410 Před 2 lety +10

      I actually did a run for all 3 of them and... they're probably worse than you'd think.
      Arcanine is slowed down initially since it only has Ember and Take Down, so it's either lowish power or inaccuracy and recoil. It gets better after getting Dig (tho you need some luck for Misty's Starmie), but after Rival 3 Gyarados becomes a recurring problem and at the Elite 4 Lorelei and the 2 Gyarados basically stonewall you, requiring a lot more leveling before it gets consistent.
      Growlithe has an even harder time, since you basically have to grind until you learn Ember before you get past Brock, Misty is an even larger problem now due to your lower stats, and the Elite 4 are even more of a brick wall than before (even with a near-perfect Growlithe, lots of vitamins and optional battles, I had to grind attempts at Lorelei until I got to level 78 just because Lance's Gyarados was such a big problem, and even then I won only because of a lucky miss followed by a crit because I still wasn't able to 2HKO that thing).
      Exeggcute gets screwed over by only having Barrage and later Leech Seed until Celadon; so before that it's worse than gambling at the Game Corner, and after that is either Psychic or Egg Bomb/Double-Edge softened by Leech Seed and Hypnosis until you get Toxic, which means Psychic spam on anything that isn't Psychic type, Toxic-Leech Seed the Psychics and sleep-Leech Seed- Psychic anything super-effective against you. It's probably one of the least fun runs imaginable.

    • @darkfiredragon3410
      @darkfiredragon3410 Před 2 lety +6

      @@Igorcastrochucre I know, that's why I'm holding off from doing a run with it, especially after the pain that was trying to do a Vulpix one.
      I initially wanted to do Growlithe-Arcanine vs Vulpix-Ninetales, but the foxes stat and movepool disadvantage is so bad it's not worth it, the biggest reason being having to deal with several powerful Water types throughout the run (Starmie, Blastoise to a lesser extent, Lorelei and Lance's Gyarados) and the dogs are plain better at dealing with them: Arcanine is just strong enough to brute force them with enough training, and Growlithe just requires some luck with Starmie and later on can badge boost with Agility to deal with all the others bar Gyarados.
      Gyarados specifically is what made me forfeit the Vulpix run and not even start the Ninetales one: the foxes' lower physical stats and lack of Agility put them at a massive disadvantage. As i said in my previous comment, Growlithe required lv 78, near perfect DVs and lots of vitamins and optional battles to get past Lance, and even then i won only thanks to a missed Hydro Pump and a crit Body Slam because I still couldn't 2hko the Gyarados; Vulpix had the same preparation as Growlithe, but not only Lorelei was much harder because I couldn't badge boost and I had to reset if I got any Attack drops, but Gyarados was nowhere near 2hko range from Body Slam, so I'd probably had to go over lv 90 to even have a shot to get that range, and Lorelei at almost lv 70 was still so inconsistent that I couldn't bear grinding exp on her and forfeited the run.
      If you're asking, no, Confuse Ray wasn't nearly as helpful as it might seem considering that I'd need 3 consecutive turns of Gyarados not to attack me between confusion and misses for that to work; same for Fire Spin, because it's not only too inaccurate but also does barely any damage to Gyarados.
      About Ninetales, it not only still can't badge boost but it doesn't even get Confuse Ray or Fire Spin, so that's why I'm not trying that after what happened.

      Starmie would still be a boss in a solo run
