I have some wonderful news for you about the hundreds of lofi hip-hop mixes out there that this sounded totally like
I'll be the jazz nerd over here and I'll explain what this guy does in his jazzy harmonization.
Bbmaj7 - IVmaj7 chord. It's cool cus it has A, F and D (the tonic triad notes and the paralel minor tonic note) in it what makes the chord sound not only predominant (as the simple IV triad does) but even tonic. So you definitely can use it to start your tune.
And also it's cool cus after this Bbmaj7 he uses a V-i motion to the relative minor, which five's a half step lower than Bb. Smooth harmonic motion is cool.
A7b13 - it starts the V-i motion for Dm (the relative minor of F) and it's basically just an A7 but with a chromatic alternation (b9 and b13 in V7s sounds cool, dreamy and kinda lofi, so try to use it in your simple V-I progressions)
A7#9 - we sharped the ninth in our V7 chord which makes the chord more dramatic and more fancy jazz than just lofi. But it's still basically just a V-I to Dm movement, keep that in mind.
Dm7 - hooray, we have finally modulated to D minor, the relative minor of F.
After that there's a Dm7-Dbm7-Cm7 motion. Basically, Cm7 is a step lower than Dm7 so we did a chord between them to vary the harmonic rhythm and make it sound more dreamy. I mean it could be just Dm7-Cm7 (a step down from Cm7) but he did Dm7-Dbm7-Cm7 (half step motion). Also I can explain the Dbm7 as a triton substitution for G7, the V7 for Cm but with a minor third. Which means that we can use just a Db7 (not Dbm7) in the motion. You also can put some extensions in it as well as we did it in A7#9 and A7b13.
Cm7-F7b9-Bbmaj7 - yoooo finally we've got a ii-V-I. #jazzsaved. Yeah, it's just a 251 to IV but with this lofi b9 in the V7.
A7b13-Dm - a yet another V-i to Dm.
Bbm6 - the IV triad with a sixth (which is very common in jazz as well as sevenths but sevenths are more dissonant than sixes) but with a minor third bc of harmonic F major with the b6 of the scale. Yeah, you can use the b6 in your major scale freely, it's common. Also it resolves good back into Bbmaj7. So the progression recycles and it's good.
And now just a simple explanation:
IVmaj7 | III7b13 (V7) III7#9 (V7) | vi7 (i7) bvi7 (triton sub for the V7) | v7 (i7) (ii7) I7b9 (V7) | IVmaj7 (I) | IIIb13 (V7) | vi (i) | iv6 ||
UPD: also just figured out that this progression is almost the same as the Blue in Green progression in Miles Davis' Kind of Blue album. Find some backing tracks on the youtubes if you want to make some noodlings over it.
UPD2: the first chord in the progression is Bb, not Bbmaj7, my little mistake. In this case the IV chord can't sound like semi-tonic beacuse it's a complete standard subdominant chord. But it doesn't mean that we can't just start the tune with a completely subdominant chord, of course we can. Historically IVmaj7 was very rarely used in jazz as a subdominant chord beacuse of it's tonic tones so jazz cats changed it for the iim7 because it's a complete subdominant chord and it's a seventh chord. Although, IVmaj7 found its usability in more fancy styles of jazz as a IVmaj#11 chord because of it's lydian sound.
UPD3: And finally, it's all not about the chords... Who even cares about them?
Thank you jazz guy! Very cool -classical music guy :^)

I made me remember of undertale for some reason
Me too. I'm not sure either.
Yup, that's indeed the power of music! Musicians (and artists in general) have the ability to influence emotions of people, which I view as something that is almost magical... Sometimes, it may even feel a bit overpowered haha... Creativity is a great tool to have and all of us have some form of it, which we can use to make the world an awesome place :)

Yep 😭
The Cabin Memphis has a cover of Reckless by Healy that's actually pretty close
The second one sounds something I would here in "lofi hip hop radio 24/7 - chill study/relax/gaming beats"
I think it's the snaps. I feel that the chords sound more like 90's R&B
it's the chord progression with the snaps and the rhodes piano that strums through the chords that gives of that vibe. Most lofi tracks use those things so that probably why your brain makes that connection.
JAJAJAJAJAJAJ A yeeees

@@reljatrkulja9790 I think lofi music often uses neosoul chord progression.

It sounds like Once Upon a Time
Nope, it's a reference to a different rpg game, but not Undertale. Hint: it was a big hit in the 90s by nintendo.
ok so i tried to figure out the chords of the ending:
Fm (i)
Eb (bVII)
Db (bVI)
Bb (IV)
F (I)
D (VI)
G (II)
C5b13 (V)
F (I)
Bbm (iv) to Dbm (bvi) to Csus4 (v)
F (I)
Bbm (iv) to Ab (bIII) to Bb (IV) to Csus4
to ??? (C9/F???)
Thx bro for the chords... u deserve more likes
this sounds like all correct I think
finally i can now play this on my guitar :>>
Yeah the chord at the end there before the little puzzle boy turned around made me feel like something wasn't right, in an unnatural way haha
It sounds like the beginning starts with Fm to Ab, and also, it sounds like the ??? is a Dm (vi). Makes sense considering the bass line, which ascends diatonically from Ab to D, and in the main melody, the phrase ends on a 6-1 motion.
Additionally, that last Dbm sounds major to my ear.
Here's my take:
Fm // Abmaj7 // Db9 // Bb
F // A7b9#9 // G13 // C9b13
F69 " " "
Bb7sus9 // Db7 // C7sus4 // C7sus4/G
Fadd9 // Bbm9 // Abmaj7 // Bb // C7sus4 // Dm // F#11

Once upon a time, once upon a time, there lived a boy with no name to call himself.
One day, the sky opened beneath the light, and a boy his age with beautiful eyes fell from the sky.
*I'm a prince from the kingdom of puzzles,* He explained to the boy, tears forming in his eyes. *The evil Queen had took my kingdom, and scattered all our puzzles onto this earth- I have to gather them all, or else the puzzle's power will dissolve this land into a barren wasteland.*
So the boy went with him.
He fought for puzzles, solving their secret, releasing them from their own caged agony.
At last he reached the Queen, and with the power of the puzzles he freed they defeated the evil Queen with little to no fanfare.
The Queen laughed, laughed, laughed as she dissolved into the air, her bun of hair flowing down freely as the puzzle crown slipped from her head and left nothing more.
The prince silently takes the crown, his face solemn- he softly sighs as the crown fits his head, and the boy realizes too late that the crown is not a blessing, and that the prince had not defeated the queen but saved her instead; he can only watch as the everlasting shackle imprison his friend.
So the boy stays next to the mindless prince, whispering everlasting stories into his empty husk, wishing he would one day come back, waiting for all eternity.
The story is same every time, and it goes like this;
*Once upon a time, once upon a time, there lived a boy with no name to call himself-*

If you love the jazzy progression and want to hear it in a song,
“What You Won’t Do For Love” by Bobby Caldwell uses that exact progression.

DUDE THIS IS SO GOOD!!! THIS COMBINES MY FAVORITE THINGS TOGETHER!
A lot of soundtrack musicians take full advantage of this and I love it. Listen to Hamilton and count how many times you can hear the same melody over different chords. Listen to the Undertale soundtrack, listen to the outro melody in "Once Upon a Time" and then listen to same melody in "Hopes and Dreams." Sometimes the chord progression switch is in the same song. A good example is "CORE" by Toby Fox where he has that little piano going throughout the entire track. And even when the chord progression changes you still hear the same melody going in the background.
Chords are my favorite thing about music and I love it.
Not just soundtrack musicians. Every song in the world has a chord progression, love it or hate it. Even if it's not there you can still feel it. If the song has no chords, it doesn't have a melody which means it's not even a song because music in general is melody and rhythm.
If You work with Toby fox in deltarune chapter 2, Will be the game with the best soundtrack EVER, BECAUSE MAN, THATS AMAZING
