      @@dranthony1882 Metronomic players like Pirlo, Modric, Xavi dont come around very often. Scholes was in the same mould, best English player of the last 20 years. Only one that is similar in terms of achievements in Rooney. Lampard, Gerrard top class scorers and assists but technically Scholes was the best he carried the tempo of the game. You don't win 11 premier league and 2 CLs for an english side, it's unheard of.

      Because brits like more crude fighting rather than skill. This is why today some people are asking midfielders to fight some more... Whereas in Spain they ask for more finesse and skill. Scholes had skill and could have played for Barca or Real if he wanted to

      @@neillynch_ecocidologist Scholes never run away. Managers always tried to bring him back, but he refused. He never liked to stay away from his family during international tournaments, and since he was getting into his 30s, he knew he could no play so much during a season (remember his asthma and his eye problem, that usually got worse the more he played).

      The way Scholes scanned the pitch is only matched by the best in his business like Xavi and Pirlo. He adds to that with his presence, physicality and dribble. What really gives him advantage though is his passing range and long shot drive.

The only thing that let Scholes down was his tackling or one could say that was a tactical yellow/red card. Zidane was once asked what’s it like being the best midfielder in the world (words that effect) and his reply was I don’t know you’d have to ask Paul Scholes!

      It's a odd comparison, other than the fact that they are English. Scholes played deeper and was more of a tempo controlling playmaker/distributor while Lampard and Gerrard were explosive attacking midfielders, sometimes even going as far forward as occupying the striker position at times in games. Scholes is not the same type of player.

    Not surprised by his answer at all. Barcelona legends have always rated Scholes very highly. If you ask Xavi and Iniesta, they would give the same answer.

    Scholes is undervalued by many because he played in a such a successful Era that he was just a cog in a big wheel. Gerrard carried Liverpool alot as there was not alot of quality around him so stood out in major way whilst Lampard was just a goal machine midfielder so hogged alot of limelight even in that amazing Chelsea team. Scholes was an under the radar genius

    Bernd Schuster was a truly special player, not named very often among the greatest, but he was different. Scored three Goals of the Month in the Bundesliga in a single season too.😊

      Bernd Schuster is one of the best ten foreign players in the history of the Liga, no question about that. He played for Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico for 12 years and was a superstar in the 80’s. As Maradona said: “people in Argentina don’t have any idea of how good Schuster was”

      Gerard and Lampard couldn't play out of their club positions and Scholes was made to experiment which he didn't like and decided to not play! If you have watched England ball in 2000's or the formation for that matter, it was horrible. 1 position for 3 star players kinda ..

    Paul scholes was what I call a proper European midfield player just so sad he was English and played for Manchester Utd but wow what a brilliant player they had on their hands just a joy to watch and this is coming from a Liverpool fan you just won’t get a other player like that just once in a decade or two so underrated in the international stage like Gerard but when Paul wanted to score a goal it would be a world class one just like Gerard scholes one of the best English players to grace the premier league I just wonder if he could play in the early 80s when football was a rugby game maybe who knows but great player never the less I just wish he wouldn’t have played well against us

      @@LesroyBuckley SAF had a dinner with him, I think it was in New York but could be wrong about the place. Basically told Pep that he wanted him to replace him at United when he retired. Unfortunately the timing of Fergies retirement wasn’t quite right at the time for Pep.

    I always said:
    Paul Scholes if you want an orchestrator in the middle with a solid defensive midfielder and an attacking one next to him. Preferably 4:3:3 formation
    Gerrard if you want an all-round midfielder. I often describe Gerrard as a 80 rated from top to bottom Fifa/Pes player with 90+ shot power and long shots. Can play in any formation
    Lampard if you have a player like Gerrard, Scholes or a solid defensive midfielder behind him and can score you many goals.

    Out of the three Scholes was the CM who could dictate tempo of match. Gerrard & Lampard could not. One reason why England could not string two passes together when Lampard & Gerrard play together.

    Once again another great manager/player recognizes what a great player Scholes was. Only in England you'll find people disrespecting him. No wonder England have not won anything since 1966. Why?     He was always going to say Scholes - Scholes is his type of player for the style of football he plays.
    In my opinion:
    a Utd team without Scholes would still have won trophies
    A Chelsea team without Lampard would still have won trophies
    A Liverpool team without Gerrard would have won no trophies
    I'm not saying Gerrard was the best as all 3 were great, but undoubtedly in terms of how they impacted a team, Gerrard stands alone

They would have had a midfielder that can dictate games better than any other in the country at the time, which could have completely transformed the club's fortunes.

Scholes was a master at controlling the game but he had better players around him most of the time than Gerrard did

      Xavi was Scholes 2.0. Scholes was the original that his game was based on. Even still, I don't think Xavi had Scholes' passing range. He'd tick the ball over just as well but a long range slicing pass, or a goal? There's only one Scholes.

Also ask the Arsenal invincibles who their toughest opponent was, they all said Scholes was an absolute nightmare to play against because of his movement and vision and were more worried about him more than any other United player and that came straight from Henry and Vieira's mouths on camera...Henry goes on about just how good Scholes was all the time as do many other legends of the game.
