what made scholes better than the rest. first he matched xavi at passing, he matched iniesta at the opponents box he matched lampard's shots outside box, he matched gerard''s workrate, he matched zidane's ball control , he matched pirlo's longevity at the game, he matched keane's reckless tackling. However none of the above could match scholes ability to transform as a utility player. from a stricker , to an attacking midfielder to a winger(in national team) to a box to box mid-fielder and later in career to defensive midfield. the world owe you a balon dor the ginger head assasin.

      Matching Xavi's passing - maybe
Matching Iniesta in the opponent's box? If you mean dribbling, then nope
Matched Lampard's shots - fair enough, I can agree with this, but not as prolific, though it wasn't his role to be either
Matched Gerrard's workrate? Nope. He ran well enough, but was never known for covering an extensive amount of ground
Matched Zidane's ball control? Sorry, no way. But he did have a very good first touch that he knew how to work into play
Pirlo's longevity? I guess, but he didn't have quite as good a peak as Pirlo did
Keane's reckless tackling? Don't really think this is an ideal to be matched to lol But in terms of defensive capabilities in general, Keane was way above him.
I will also agree with the statement about how he adapted his game through the years and in different systems, but I have to point out that Gerrard, Pirlo and Iniesta were also people who adapted as time went on, while an argument could be made that players of the calibre of Zidane didn't have to adapt because their quality never dipped for them to need to change till the end

@Ajmal Ali even at Scholes' peak, he was never United's best midfielder overall in terms of how important he was to the team. He was the type of player your fellow players admire maybe, but Keane, Beckham and Giggs were all as important if not moreso in terms of what they brought to the team. And even if you argued the Manchester United point, at his very best, Scholes was never an integral part of the English NT, whether it was a successful one or not. Pirlo's peak saw him pick up and play an important part in not just every Team based title possible, from the CL to the WC, he was also nominated for almost every conceivable individual award, garnering places in all star teams. Scholes highest ever individual accolade on the world stage was being nominated as a CANDIDATE for the FIFPro World XI twice. Not even being a part of it.
So no, other than partial sentimentality, Scholes' prime never reached the peak of Pirlo's.
I never mentioned Zidane for anything other than his attacking capabilities, I said he never HAD to change his position because he was able to play at the highest level in the same one all the way till the end. When you say he fucking sucked in Juventus, you mean the same Zidane who won Serie Player of the Year while playing for Juventus?
Scholes never 'bossed it' in the DM or wing positions, he merely adapted to them.
Zidane never hit his peak till he hit Juve, but even if we take your 96 argument, Zidane was also voted the Ligue 1 player of the year for the 95/96 season.
Scholes was never in Zidane's level. Or Peak Iniesta's for that matter.
As for Gerrard, look at the context I used him in, as a legitimate box to box midfielder who really could do everything a central midfielder is supposed to do.
Before you came at me with a reply, please back up statements with more than just club based favoritism.
And Conte was 1000 times the defensive component as Keane was? Now who's overrating Players and underrating players lol

  • @maskrey
    @maskrey Před 4 lety +97

Honestly, there are no highlights that can do Scholes justice. You have to watch him playing out the matches. Kids these days only know him through highlights and Wikipedia, so they can never understand how he is the best. The greatest points of comparison can be seen when he came back from retirement and lead United to the PL title. At that point, he no longer had the agility and stamina to chase the ball and to cover the whole pitch. He mostly just played short passes and covered the middle of the pitch. Yet, it was absolutely stunning how different United played with and without him. And it was very easy to observe because he only played half the match most of the time. It's super hard to describe in words, but the best I can do is it was like United had an extra ball to play with.
One match you can look back at is Chelsea vs United in 2011/2012, very shortly after his comeback. Scholes was in with only a third of the match remaining. United was down 3-1 at Stanford Bridge, and saying they played like shit was an understatement. Scholes completely owned the pitch with only short passes, and the match ended 3-3. Chelsea outclassed United before Scholes, United outclassed them after Scholes, it was that simple. Feel free to plug in any name, Pirlo, Xavi, whoever, there's absolutely nobody else can do that.

Any true utd fan will criticize Pogba, the guy is poison, he is only bringing tension, and how many times his agent criticizes the club and Ole, how many times his brothers doing the same, he is just quite not saying anything, he posts ads when team lose, he is super quite when we win big matches, be a man and put an official statement to shut everyone, I fkn hate him and I dont care how good he is, he should just leave the club

i have been privileged to watch United since 1958. I saw the great Duncan Edwards. I saw Ray Wilkins who was a brilliant passer of the ball from midfield but Scholes could do everything. I would not try to compare him with Edwards who was gone before he reached his prime but Scholes did it week after week, year after year. He is, without doubt, the finest midfielder of his generation.
