Why This Rad '80s Supercar Was Banned From Racing and Hated By The Media

The ’80s gave us some of the most iconic supercars like the Ferrari Testarossa, the Lamborghini Countach, and the C4 Corvette. But there is one car that absolutely dominated on track, it had the makings of a legend, yet barely anyone knows or talks about it. This is the story of a car built by an economist, sold at a mall, and hated by the press. The media had their sights dead set on making sure the Consulier GTP was not to be liked by the public. Yet Warren Mosler never gave up, he even used Elon Musk tactics before Elon! He took a sledgehammer to his very own Consulier GTP… trust us when we say this is a crazy car.

probably a PT Cruiser
Datsun cause that shit never breaks
Any hybrid or electric car
Anything already broken with no hope for repairs cause it sounds fun
Many thanks for doing this! For the record, the monocoque is 12oz e glass and some s glass over a 5lb/cuft pvc foam core. The doors have some Kevlar as well as the mounting area for the seat belts. The front brakes are Chrysler, the rears are Fiero because they incorporated a parking brake, Suspension is inboard using rocker arms to minimize unsprung weight. I personally got to take the checker at the 24 hour race at Nelson Ledges before we were banned. We were also banned from Car and Driver's One Lap of America after winning it 3 times. The Mosler MT900 was banned from IMSA after winning in 2002, and the FIA banned it from La Mans and international races, while it did win many races nationally in British GT, Spanish GT, Dutch Supercar, and others.
Can't believe nobody else has seen this yet... It's the man, the myth, the legend himself lol.
You've made such an incredible car. I hope to one day own one, but the chances are rather slim... asking price is too high for it to be reasonable, sadly.

What an amazing car Warren, maybe I'll see one in person one day! It really was ahead of its time, any idea with its 0-60 and 1/4 miles times were by chance?
Conclusion : people were just jealous about this car

Not really, its a bad design of a car and it broke easy after a while, cost alot to replace broken parts, more like a investment more than a car..

This should be built and sold as a KIT CAR.... Today, several motors and turbos would take this car to a new dimension.
Yeah i would agree. It should be sold as an independent car or as a kit and refined over the years. When it reaches it's peak- better suspension and cooling- it's a legit car that gets 25 or 30 mpg.
The Ultima GTR is a kit car a bit like this. Thing is though, the most laborious part of making this car is the monocoque. You don't just make that in your garage just like that. And as a manufacturer, once you've gone through the trouble of producing the monocoque, you can just make the rest of the car yourself as well.
Today nobody would be allowed to drive this, because it's unsafe af.
I would just drive it just to be driving it. It loots sooo nice

the supercar series rules allowed engine mods and t2/t3 engines respond better to mods than most engines do. levitas was getting a lot more than 200hp out of these cars. less power than the modded turbo 911's and the modded ohc zr1's but enough to beat them.

Note to self: never trust Car and Driver ever again since they’re willing to take advantage of people and smear the competition so badly.
Agree...
I mean - that's not something new. The established racing teams/manufacturers were always really against having new competitors or revolutionary cars/bikes in their races - as seen with the ZDS Moto Guzzi or even the Jaguar XJ13. Even nowadays they can be really petty if the feel like they get put on the spot by better cars or even just better drivers - vinwiki here on yt has a story about a student race car project where they had a lot of adversity at a race, just because somebody who knew the organizer was hurt in his pride...

The car is visually stunning in appearance in an organic way. The engine choice is way ahead of it’s time. Mosley indeed took a page out of Colin Chapman’s book to build this.
So this is basically NSX before the NSX. RMR, cheap, reliable, good handler, & not overly powerful supercar.

The NSX weighed 3000 lbs and had 270hp, the Consulier weighed 1850-2100lbs with 200-220hp stock but mopar sold a power upgrade to around 300 with bigger turbo, injectors and calibration the super 60 kit.. Its faster to 60 by a half second as well at 4.9 and 4.2 for the later turbo 3 engine. Yup extremely cheap to maintain and reliable I have only broken a $28 charge pipe and a leaking slave cylinder this year both stocked by napa. If I blew up the engine a forged 500hp capable rebuilt longblock is $3500 and a transmission rebuild is $1200 just like an 80's Shelby turbo dodge.
THIS EPISODE IS ONE OF THE COOLEST ON DONUTS!!! love you all! good one Feli!
I was introduced to this car when it started in the 80s crime drama "Hardcastle and McCormick" . I think one was an ex con racecar driver and the other was a no nonsense judge. The judge gave the racecar driver a second chance and employed him to help solve crimes with spirited driving. Even the theme song was an homage to the car opening with 'Drive ! Push it to the floor 'til the engine screams . Drive ! Drivin' like the demon that drives your dreams" . Mercifully that is all I remember though there could have been a verse about "Drive ! You and a criminal get into a big ass bloody tift . Drive! Watch out for snap oversteer when you lift".
Pretty sure the Hardcastle one was just a kit car with a V8 Chevy, or at least soundtrack was a V8.

Cool car, interesting story sad ending.. very good at least it remained in existence for all people that like cars to knew such car exist and the story behind it..
its more greed than anything
This is a relatively benign example of automotive visionaries being fucked over by their big competition. I mean, in German car history alone we have Hans Glas, Carl Borgward and August Horch, who all made beautiful cars, to just name a few, though Horch managed to come back after being fucked over (you know him by the latinisation of his name: Audi).
In the US you also have people like Preston Tucker who even got his own biopic and was played by Jeff Bridges, IIRC.,
It means the world not deserve such great car
I got to visit the shop while in University. The composite body and adjustable suspension were way ahead of their time.
What were the wheels on that PT Cruiser? I'd love a set for my E30
That thing looks like someone put some of the best 80/90's supercars in a blender and this was born!
I like this thing! It reminds me of a Lotus Esige, light competently powered little car. Also I know it was in the 80’s but that stunt from Car and Driver kinda pisses me off.
Except in an exige you are rubbing elbows with your passenger, this car is 20% larger exterior and at least 30% larger interior at the same weight with carpets, leather everything, car phone, ac, cruise control.

Wow that burn!
That car phone is so cool, wow lol love it!
That reminds me of the Chapparal 2J story.
Btw how about start a petition to bring this car back into market? I'd buy one.
Media: the gtp is a shit car
also media: here's why the prius is a great car
A Prius with 400k on it is still worth 5,000 bucks so...... I cant even afford a 10yr old Prius.
This is a great car, but so is the Prius, just for completely different reasons. If you're not a car person and just want a reliable, comfy, affordable car that's good on gas, the Prius is fantastic
@@jameshavenga4998 That's the only thing the Prius is good at, Fuel Millage. It's not especially affordable, comfy nor especially reliable. The main reason why it even got so many sales are Taxi companies, those bastards love it.
@@yanuchiuchihaanimegamesand3907 for good reason. They used corollas before that, so it has to be a great car, maintenance as well
Me: Can I have an NSX
Mom:We already have NSX at home
NSX at home: *its 80s time*
I saw one of these on the street a few months ago here in Florida!! It immediately caught my eye and thankfully I got a clean enough picture to make out the Make and Model printed on the back of the car so I could research what I had witnessed.
He should have to do a push up for every time he said "freaking"🤣
Can't say "fucking" which is more suitable
