I feel like it sets us up for a continuation, but it doesn't really. It gives us the feeling of reminiscence of everything that happened up until now.

What if the majority of these shinigami are the users of those several deathnotes that made their way to the human world in the past. Including ryuk

If you look at the clothing of the shiningamis, they look like they're from different time eras. Look at rem for example, she looks like she looks like she was from the Egyptian times, some other look like they're from native Americans, and just some are still questionable. However, the most obvious is this shimigami. His clothes look more modern than accient or unusual. So its safe to say when a death note user dies, they'll be brought back as a shimigami, which states the fact of what ryuk said "does who wrote in the death note, shall nether go to heaven nor hell."

While I feel now this may have been a translation issue or twisting on something purposefully by the animators cuz sadly the Manga ((never cared to read it myself)) doesn't have that and it's author is dead on having "nothingness" as the only choice after death, but ryuke says even in the anime in his head while watching Lights dad die that while anyone who uses the notebook is cursed for tragedy, he never actually used it himself, so perhaps he really does get a joyful end, his words per English dub. I choose to see it the same as you guys though because it brings me a happy feeling to think L is up above watching over Near with Mello at his side, Kira can Rot for all I care. But I think the other 3 who used it met an actual erased fate because I doubt they became shinigamis themselves. I feel like kira just met all the requirements the others didn't. As for that, I had a new theory I been pondering? What happens when a shinigami dies by sacrificing their own life for a humans? By writing a name to save them? They turn to dust but there's always that shiny sparkle as it happens during the anime. I been thinking what if this is some weird redemption thing where without realizing it, it permits them to move on to the afterlife?

There should be a death note sequel where Shinigami Light truly drops off the notebook, and someone picks it up And this time at L's place, Near should be given more importance and character development
The initial reason I thought this wasn’t Light was because this Shinigami’s style didn’t remind me of Light. They have a biker gang style, a chaotic force, unlike Light who was mentally deranged but intelligent enough to last for 2 years unnoticed as Kira. I would’ve expected a more formal style, or something with wings to represent his god complex. Of course, this appears to all be speculation, so who am I to decide what’s canon? And despite my gripes (some of which I haven’t even mentioned here), I love the idea of Light reincarnating as a Shinigami, even if they don’t remind me of the gay brunette genius himself. Edit: Changed my mind: The shinigami is wearing the same clothes that Light died in AND the goggles could symbolize his refusal to use the Shinigami eyes; that is DEFINITELY Light. Credits to @hazardmix for bringing up that last detail

He is wearing the red tie that is lights He has lights limp from the gunshotz His jacket and hair are similar The death note states that people who use it cannot go to heaven or hell. Which means theres a chance they go to the shinigami realm. The shinigami brought ryuk an apple and tossed it in the similar way he does as light. He left before the stiry finished. Indicating he already knew how it ended And finally, Ryuk refereed to light. Which coukd have been him quite literally talking to him. I believe shinigami light wants to find another human and work through them as kira once more.

it is not confirmed but in japanese culture they believe once someone is dead is in hell or becomes something, they wont remember their past life on earth. considering that, the shinigami that mentioned in this video has the similaties of light, so i think he is light.
