  • This cheap fireplace makeover turned out great! Follow this video for an affordable and easy DIY fireplace update! I used high heat black matte spray paint to cover the brass elements and discolored internal brick of the fireplace. I also used peel and stick backsplash tiles to cover the outdated pink grout and white square tiles on the surround. And finally I used beautiful aquamarine colored fire glass to bring this 1980s fireplace back into style! I am so pleased with how this cheap DIY fireplace makeover turned out!
If you decide to try out this cheap fireplace update, I want to see! Tag me in your project pictures on instagram @AmandaFallonHomes =)
Here are links to the products I used to complete this fireplace transformation for less than $100!
    Cleaning Recipe:
    -1 Large Home Depot Bucket
    -1 Gallon Warm Water
    -1 Cup Bleach
    -6 Tablespoons TSP
    www.homedepot.com/p/SAVOGRAN-...
    -Nylon Brush to scrub
I ended up doing this 4x to get this fireplace clean.
    You'll also need:
    -Painter's Tape
    -Newspaper
-Rust-Oleum Black Matte Specialty High Heat Spray Paint (qty 1)
    www.walmart.com/ip/Rust-Oleum...
    -Mask
    -Peel and Stick Backsplash Tiles
*I ordered 3 sets of 6 sheets and ended up using about 15 sheets total
*The exact backsplash I used is sold out at the moment, but this style is very similar:
    www.walmart.com/ip/Crystiles-...
    -Scissors
    -Element Aquamarine Fireglass (qty 2)
    www.walmart.com/ip/Element-Aq...
I chose to remove the fire screen completely to not distract from the fireglass. Alternatively you could spray paint the screen.

You cannot put peel and stick on a fireplace because of the heat! Almost all peel and stick tiles will list this on the manufacturers websites

They’ve actually made several peel and stick tiles that are intended for high heat surfaces and fireplaces you should give it a look they sell them at Lowe’s and Home Depot I think they like pretty nice

Peel and stick tiles aren't meant to be that close to a heat source. Minimum 14 inches for most peel and stick tile options, so it seems like you're creating a fire hazard?

agree. You can buy actual stone peel and stick for about $15 a square foot at Home Depot or Amazon. You need a dremel to cut it. It's about 3/8 inches thick.

People need to upgrade to a direct vent fireplace from Hennings in Vista, CA. Most efficient fireplace that actually puts heat in the room rather than out the chimney.

    Hi Amanda, nice result!
In the beginning of the video you said you were going to spray the peel and stick tiles black.
I didn't see that in the end result.
Did you try to spray paint the peel and stick and did or did it not work.
Reason I ask is because I want to buy some and change the colour.

    • @AmandaFallonHomes
      @AmandaFallonHomes  Před 4 lety

Hi Angel! Thank you for watching! I ended up loving the tiles the way they looked so I left them as they were! I did test a piece of tile using that black matte spray paint and after 30 minutes it still wasn't fully dry, almost like the surface was just too slippery, so I'm not sure spray painting them is the best idea after all. If you try it out please post pictures and tag me so I can see! @AmandaFallonHomes =)

OMG NO NO NO! The area near your firebox needs to be fireproof. A gas fireplace gets hot too. Not only will the heat melt the plastic, it's not to building code.

You are setting up clients for disaster, possibly lising their home. You really should take this down. That stuff is not tile and will melt and catch on fire and its petroleum based so will burn in an instant!

WARNING. A realtor should know better than this. Some DIY projects may look great but are a health and safety hazard. Check with local building code regulations before applying any materials around the opening of the firebox. Most require at least 6 inches of noncombustible material. Vinyl tile and vinyl adhesives can melt and emit toxic fumes when exposed to heat. Code violations make you liable in the event of injury or fire damage and they affect the resale value of your property. You can be fined for violations. Insurance companies can reject your claim.
