I'm happy to hear you're moving onto a project that you're truly passionate about, at least in the heat of the moment. Funny story, I've had this pipe dream of making my own game since I was a kid, and I just had an epiphany earlier today where I now know exactly the kind of game I wanna make. I don't think any progress will start for the next few years since there's smaller fish I wanna fry first. But inspiration just struck me today, and I finally know my long-term path forward. As far as your project is concerned, I could tell it wouldn't be easy from the jump, especially when you have next to no knowledge in the world of coding and such. But the best things in life never come easy, and I admire your dedication to the craft. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm very interested to see your take on the old-school formula.
The original donkey Kong country trilogy ( I don't know if it's just me who calls is that) is a master piece, and I'm sure this will be a masterpiece too, I can't wait to see all of the great things you and your team will bring to the table. Thanks Al!

Good on you to make this dev log. I'm a programmer, but it took me years of school and work experience to get where I am, and honestly, you'll never feel like you're pro. That's okay. The whole point is to learn what you need to achieve your goal. Experience just adds up over time this way anyway. You get better and better, so good on you for sticking with it so far. Programming is literally another language, but most common languages follow the same patterns and have similar foundational functionality. Learn some of the basics like flow control and loops, data types like arrays, ints, strings, etc. You'll get where you need to go in no time.
Unfortunately as much as ive been wanting to start out with game design and messing around with blender, I'm still incredibly inexperienced. I would have loved to want to work on this project. Such a huge fan, i hope everything goes wonderfully for you and your ideas. Make the game we all want!
Good thing is that Unity has a lot of documentation almost anything you want to do, you can find some answers scattered across the internet. Good luck with your ape game about apes
I've been having similar struggles with this animated series I'm working on. It's a series animated with both Gmod and 2D animation. Honestly, I envy you for managing to get a good grip on Blender. I've tried doing it, but I've always got caught up with other stuff or just put it down and claimed that I'll do it another day. I'd be more than happy to help you Al, but with the workload I currently have, I sadly don't have the time. Hope your game turns out swell though.
i wanted to make a game too, a n64 styled rail shooter and then work my way up to an open world majoras mask esc game, learned a bunch of blunder, then i got to unity and c# and i slowly lost my mind, now im getting really good at sega/supernintendo graphics, im thinking of trying to make a point and click game, might be more possible for me, good luck dude

Damn, if you were around years ago, I would have jumped at the opportunity. I haven't touch 3D anything in quite a while though. You do have very relatable and inspiring thoughts, so perhaps 2023 will finally be the year I get off my tookus and finally learn some Blender, depending on how job stuff works out. If I may recommend one thing, perhaps consider doing smaller projects first, just to get the hang of it all. Obviously the more complicated things become, the more of a hassle it'll be to test and code for, but I imagine you'll benefit long term from taking on smaller projects at first, plus you get the morale boost of completing something.

I don't really have the talent to do computer modeling. Kind of. The most experience I have, when it came to computer art modeling (I think that's what it's called) is an old Disney 3D Art Game that is honestly more spooky like than I remember. This is when I was a kid. Seriously, it was like that one Simpsons 3D Short from Treehouse of Horror. I didn't even know what I was doing. I do wish the best of luck to you for making a video game. It's a very ambitious undertaking, but it is a time to do so. Considering how most people desire games that are more grounded than the churn of the gaming assembly line. If you ever want or need a writer, for some reason, then I will gladly volunteer. As i desire to hone my writing skills for a book series, in the future. Good luck, Uncle Al. All that is needed is patience and learning from what will come. And better postal service that's better than UPS. I hope you'll never go through that crap again.
Good luck on your project. I have made a few games with other engines that were much smaller scale like remaking pong and a few other games. It is not an easy process, but focus on getting the core gameplay or what is the important system of your game down before you pitch.

The only game-dev related thing im capable of doing well is music composition. If you need a soundtrack composer in the future, I could maybe try for applications then.
I'm not sure if you'll read this. But as a student currently taking a Video-Game college course dealing with Unity, I think you'll prefer to use Playmaker to help with your coding. It's a Unity asset from the Unity store that's allows for 'Visual Coding,' personally making coding MUCH more comprehensible to wrap my dumb ape brain around. Granted, it is a PAID asset; but many titles such as Hollow Knight has used it in their game's production so it's a viable alternative. I highly urge you to check it out, or at least peak at it if you think it'll make the coding process a lot easier on your end.
I recently started working on a game project in Unity too, I'd say it's been a good experience overall. It's a VR fan title that I can't wait to unveil, scripting for it has actually been a pretty fun challenge as it involves real-time object slicing. Only problem I see coming up in the near future is modeling assets and environments, something I'm not particularly experienced with. I do have the advantage of it being a fan project, so borrowing pre-existing game assets should be able to fly for this project, but it'll definitely be a headache when working on a completely original project. Side note, I'd recommend checking out microcenter for a PC if you got any of those around you. Their powerspec brand is as good as a prebuilt PC gets

One thing that I want you to be catious/semi-catious about - and this purely from me following the news of a """game"""called "Abandoned" - Don't blow smoke up people's butts and keep switching up your agenda, scope and hyping up something when we know NOTHING of a prototype or anything of the product. Have you tried using W3 schools? They're great for teaching ya basic syntaxes of different languages as well as being able to practice the code in the site. And it's free. I've been programming for 16 years now, mostly C++, learned Blender recently, and worked on games on many different game dev kits/IDEs. Construct 3 is something cool that I've played with that doesn't really require programming knowledge to use.
Hey uncle al. Big fan. I'm not very tech savvy but if you're in the market for a story writer or just someone to bounce ideas off of I feel like I'd be able to help you out with that. My specialty is coming up with characters who's abilities have a lot of natural " fighting chemistry". In other words the dynamic between powers will always feel evenly matched and yet completely different in their uses and it's a wonder to the reader/ observer who's gonna win and how. Either way good luck and I can't wait to see what you come up with.
I recommend you get a dell g15 laptop with at LEAST an i7 processor. Yes, it is quite expensive BUT, it’s also pretty darn nice lol. Plus it has a nice portability to it (but it is quite noisy). Either way, it’s powerful. So I will say that. Good luck dude! 👍
I want to suggest Unreal Engine 5 as they have both a blueprint mode and a C++ mode. This means you don't need to know coding to develop a game with blueprint mode.

Not many Like me get past the concept part before raging, I have a similar problem where I can read code, but for the life of me I don't know where to start with it. Wish you the best BANANA that No Darn King krocsdilanonly could steal from your heart, you have your crystal coconut in hand, don't lose Legend! even if isn't complete atleast you tried, and thats usually what makes it intersting, going through the experince of actually creating a Fun thing for people to do, Heck you tingle some's watermelons enough for them to execute on their own like me as I'm not as stubborn, i'm more like garfield's stubborness, may care for a bit, but evutally will just go sleep after 30 minutes.
Honestly, you know I'd love to help you out with something, I had an idea I did wanna share on discord too, and a team working with Unity if you'd wanna go further :) Either way this goes I'm deeply invested and wanna see you succeed
I know the pain of scripting on poorly powered hardware. I’m hoping to build up my own PC some time soon next year, and even then I’d looking into the new visual scripting pipeline for unity If given the chance.

It seems like a big project. It's something I respect a lot, but I imagine things won't go super well if it's a first game. (I assume this is the first game you're working on, maybe you've made tiny playable stuff in the past and just never shared it.)

I think the story of the game should be like this: SpongeBob, Mario, Ren, Squidward, and Mr.Krabs owe $4,599 to the Boss of a under ground meth empire, (imma use Gus Fring as a example.) In order to get this money. SpongeBob, Mario, Ren, Squidward and Mr.krabs have to Traverse through DK country like levels, defeat Bosses that owe money to the Meth Boss, and find lost bags of Meth that Walter and Jesse lost before they splited up. You should add cutscenes for the fun :) and I hope you voice all characters! ❤

Maybe in the future, you could get help from BigMode (Videogamedunkey's indie game company) in terms of publishing and possibly funding.
Seriously trust me get at least a somewhat demo out of your game and pitch to as many studios as you can and if I do recommend one go for big mode

I know the pain of scripting on poorly powered hardware. I’m hoping to build up my own PC some time soon next year, and even then I’d looking into the new visual scripting pipeline for unity If given the chance.

I do have experience in 3D modeling but not much. I’m more skill in character design, will you be interested in that?
LBP3 tought me how to visual script.
I just have a hard time with actual code.

It seems like a big project. It's something I respect a lot, but I imagine things won't go super well if it's a first game.
(I assume this is the first game you're working on, maybe you've made tiny playable stuff in the past and just never shared it.)

I think the story of the game should be like this:
SpongeBob, Mario, Ren, Squidward, and Mr.Krabs owe $4,599 to the Boss of a under ground meth empire, (imma use Gus Fring as a example.)
In order to get this money. SpongeBob, Mario, Ren, Squidward and Mr.krabs have to Traverse through
DK country like levels, defeat Bosses that owe money to the Meth Boss, and find lost bags of Meth that Walter and Jesse lost before they splited up.
You should add cutscenes for the fun :) and I hope you voice all characters! ❤

A wise man said to me once. Women can be ruthless and heartless. And honestly, it’s true I’ve been hurt so many times by girls it’s not even funny. They all use to treat me like a ghost, invisible. Something they could use and abuse, But now I’ve turn the tables, I became more heartless and ruthless. And it worked. Quick suggestion for code, try exploring other langauges, like python or Lua. i heard the latter is easier.
