  • AMBER VALLEY WALK FEATURING DUFFIELD, MILFORD AND MAKENEY
    "Duffield, Milford and Makeney”
    Filmed 8th August 2020
    Post-production completed 27th August 2020
A week after my walk in South Derbyshire, I slowly head northwards as I begin to follow the valley of the River Derwent north of the city of Derby. Today’s journey takes me into the Derbyshire Borough of Amber Valley starting in the delightful village of Duffield. The walk follows a couple of short sections of the Midshires Way as I make for two other villages, Milford and Makeney, the latter of which has one of the county’s finest inns…..
Filmed in the Borough of Amber Valley in the county of Derbyshire. Locations include Duffield, Milford, Makeney and Duffield Bank.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Special thanks to Duffield Parish Council and Visit Peak District and Derbyshire for their information used in my research for this film.

Great episode as always and those three settlements have great buildings, especially Duffield. Sad nothing remains of Duffield Castle now although the drawing of what it could have looked like reminds me of the keep in Bristol Castle and Dover Castle. I enjoyed the soundtrack too and I'm looking forward to future episodes!

Thank you for all the inspirational walks that have encouraged me to see some of these places. The effect on my mood, physical and mental health has been immeasurable. Your informative and mellow style coupled with great videography is a treat. These are easily of a standard I would watch as a weekly TV series.

Looks a lovely walk Patrick. I'll have to make time to go. I saw an article listing the pubs in Derbyshire with the best views (Derby Telegraph online) and the Bridge Inn at at Duffield was on there. I wouldn't mind visiting the castle either.

I've never been inside the Bridge Inn. Not much to see really where the castle as, but the history is interesting. Thanks for watching Jamie 👍

Patrick, I visited the bridge Inn last night with a friend and it is a lovely pub, very much an eatery, but you can go in for just a pint. We sat outside and just listened to the river. Glorious. A bit pricey (£10.75 for two alcoholic beverages), but well worth a visit.

Another lovely video Patrick. Thanks so much. One of the many things I love about the U.K. is the fact that you can find a public footpath, track or lane leading put of almost every village with so many, many lovely walks available. This is not the case here in Australia. We do not have public footpaths.

I agree Patrick getting out of the car is like standing on a chair - we certainly see the area in a new way. A lovely walk -shame you couldn't go in the pub. I was hoping we'd get a peak but alas closed due to covid I imagine. Parts of it reminded me of Herefordshire and the Wye Valley. Beautiful rolling hills. Very pastoral. Thanks Patrick for another great 20 minutes. All the best. Mark P.S I'm commenting because my walk has been put off 1 day - couldn't be helped. Peace!

Hey Mark, I must admit I thought you'd be in Chepstow now, but of course you say it's been put off by a day now. I could have gone into the pub but I just wanted to get on with filming the walk, so will go back sometime on a more leisurely day. Yes it is rather like parts of Herefordshire and the Wye Valley, and it gets more rugged the further north we go. Thanks for watching Mark and I will be thinking of you whilst you're in the Wye Valley, I know you're going to have an awesome time! Take care my friend and all the best. Cheers, Patrick 😊

Regarding the question of where the Pennines start:
The Pennines could be defined precisely as the outcrop in the Midlands and North of England of the Millstone Grit and Carboniferous Limestone.
The main outcrop of the Millstone Grit starts on the northern edge of Derby, so a little south of Duffield in fact. This could be considered the beginning of the Pennines proper. However, there is also an inlier of Millstone Grit and Carboniferous Limestone to south of Derby around Melbourne and Calke Abbey. The southernmost outcrop of the Millstone Grit I could find from the British Geological Survey map of the area is to the west of Thringstone in Leicestershire but this in a river valley and wouldn't look very Pennine like.
The southernmost area of proper Pennine landscape and scenery would be the Weaver Hills to the west of Ashbourne reaching 1217ft/371m.
