  • This comprehensive video dives into the complex history of Muslims in Spain, detailing the rise and fall of Islamic empires and the struggle for religious freedom.
Covering nearly 800 years of historical events from the Christian conquest of Granada in 1492 to the Expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, the video explores how religious and political tensions led to the forced conversions, rebellions, and ultimate expulsion of Muslims from the Iberian Peninsula.
Through accounts of significant battles, royal decrees, and the persistence of Islamic culture despite persecution, the video offers a poignant look at the vanished Islamic heritage in Spain and its lasting impact on both Spanish and Islamic history.

You know I always wondered how European nations were so heavily Christian in the first place, when I started to find about things such as the spanish inquisition, portugese inquisition in goa, or the Inquisitions led by the Byzantines against the hellenic pagans. It makes all sense to me they used force. They razed their temples and gave them periods of grace to convert to Christianity, leave or perish.
During the Portugese inquisition of Goa, hindus were not even allowed to recite their own prayer and all temples were closed by 1541. They were mandated to listen to catholic preachings once of age. This is why Goa in India was revealed to be 99 percent Catholic in 1700.
Just search up religion in Goa and look at 1500 onwards.
Interestingly, had Muslims adopted such policies as some claim, there was no way Islam would not be the major religion of modern day India, Andalus, the Balkans, and Russia.

700 years of war cast upon them and they finally succeeded, by the grace of God. I don't know how tolerant I would have been either. Converting to Islam in such a war is treachery. For how to Islamicly treat converts away from Islam, or traitors, let us see the sunnah of your prophet:
      Sahih e Bukhari 6922
"... according to the statement of Allah's messenger: 'Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'"
      Sahih e Bukhari 3043
"When the tribe of Bani Qurayza was ready to accept Sad's judgment, Allah's Apostle sent for Sad who was near to him... Sad said, "I give the judgment that their warriors should be killed and their children and women should be taken as prisoners."
For how to treat infidels waging war against you:
      Surah e Infal verse 12
"I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them."

Fascinating and tragic. Great video resuming the book I'm reading by Matthew Carr "blood and faith"
This was a sad chapter in Iberian history. I live in Spain now and my wife and I went to a town in the interior of Alicante called Alcalali. It was empty in 1609 after the expulsion and had to be repopulated with christians.
The way the moriscos were treated in most areas was awful to say the least. And even though in the rebellions the Muslims committed atrocities you can only imagine how much they had been oppressed and persecuted for years and years to even drive them to act in such a way. You have freedom until a gov beurocrat says you don't and in this case the Catholics only kept their promises for so long of religious freedom until they didn't.

But were not the Muslims in someone else's country... Spain, which previous to the Muslim conquest belonged to Spain? Brits would have done the same to the Normans after 1066 had they been able. They did try and the Harrying of the North by William the Conqueror was the devastating result for us. And they were all Europeans. So a completely different culture like Islam would have been more than understandable... to an Englishman.

      @Brandon-xp1ob Před 6 měsíci +3

@@kenhutley971 Hi. I'm not a historian but I guess I'll answer the best I can.
The first thing is that there was no "Spain" back in 711 when the Arab forces crossed Gibraltar and began to conquer. Spain as a unified state did not exist until the late 15th century when the Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella married, so referring to this are as Spain during that time is like me referring to the united states' in the same room he period. It simply didn't exist yet. The occupants of the peninsula were the visigoths who came and plundered Rome and continued on and settled in the Iberian peninsula. The visigoths were going through somewhat of an internal power struggle and were already in a weekend state when they were conquered. I think one of the heirs to their thrown might have conspired with the Muslims to overthrow their long and facilitate an invasion but I'm not sure. I believe most inhabitants did not oppose their new leaders. The visigoths were Christian. Again, I'm not a historian. I think a lot of us knew how ruthless the Catholic church could be back in those days. As far as I know under Muslim rule everyone was allowed to pursue their own religious beliefs. Jews, Muslims and christians all lived peacefully in Al Andalus. There may have been some incidents but the Muslim state at the time did not oppress and punish people not willing to convert to Muslim though I think they did pay some kind of fee or tariff for being allowed to worship. Some people continued to be christians and others willingly converted to Islam.
We also have the Arabs to thank for a vast wealth of knowledge in science and mathematics. Algebra is just one example. Cordoba under Arab rule in the late 11th century was one of the few European cities thriving and was a prominent center for learning and culture while most of Europe was in the so called dark ages. Please don't take this as me liking Muslims more than christians or anything like that. I understand also that many christians during the same time in Muslim rule areas were persecuted as well by Muslims. But the general idea I get from learning what happened in post reconquista Spain 1492-1614 was that many law abiding, good, hard working citizens just wanted to live their lives, practice their religion, raise their children, till their land but simply couldn't because the Catholic church viewed them as heretics and forcibly obliged them to convert to Christianity or die. Many converted to Christianity but secretly continued living a Muslim life. The book I'm reading is fantastic. It's worth a read. "Blood & faith" Matthew Carr. I think he's from the UK
      Cheers!

Through out history after the fall of Al Andalus around eighty thousands of Muslim and Jewish Spanish people came to Tunisia and many others to Morocco and Algeria . We've got so many food recipes from them especially sweet pastries. The music called Maluf also literature and poetry . They've built beautiful mosques and villages they've always lived in the most fertile lands. Also had a space for bullfighting 😅Also they kept their Spanish family names . At some point, the Spanish monarch issued an edict banning the Moriscos(Muslims who were forcefully converted to Christianity but are viewed as not sincere in their conversion) from using public and even their own personal bath houses except on certain days in fear that they would secretly pray and use the water source to take ablution. A lot of the Moriscos maintained their religious and cultural aspect often associated to being a Muslim in medieval Spain such as frequenting bath houses, wearing traditional dress and veils, singing traditional songs, fasting, abstaining from pork, et al.

Thats why you see where Spain was the longest in our country because below "the river" the Catholicism is way more high and dominant than above "the river"... for muslims who do not understand what i mean by Catholicism is they follow the church, we Christian's follow the bible, they have a lot of traditions never to be found in the bible only in the Catholic faith, we do not have Saints and images and only can be forgiven by God not a priest or pope etc. etc. Sad history story and still very interesting to hear from different religions.

      "Made up persecution."
We have literal saints who were martyred during this time....
At first, the Muslims were in fact tolerant, this was until the Jizya was abolished around the 11th century, without the Jizya, Christians faced the exact same punishments muslims did under the new Catholic monarchs. We can see how prevalent forced conversions just by looking at the religious % in the 10th and 11th centuries. In the 10th centuries, we see a population of around 50/50 Muslims and Christians, with a few Jews, by the 11th centuries, Muslims had skyrocketed to over 75%, with Christians becoming less than 25%.
Even this "tolerant" period I spoke of at the start of my previous paragraph wasn't so tolerant, search up Martyrs of Cordoba.

When Berbers conquered Iberia, many Christian’s fled and many stayed but were not forced to convert. That is how you had millions of Christian’s in Al Andalus within the peninsula hundreds of years after Muslim rule, not just in the northern Christian kingdoms. Once again, Christian’s did not treat Muslim subjects the same when they finally conquered the entirety of Iberia. They were eventually all forced to leave or convert. I hope this doesn’t sound ignorant or off putting to anyone, but What I find hard to understand is if Muslims have been persecuted for this long wherever they go that isn’t their native land, why don’t they go to their native place where they can practice all they want all their own customs? I understand it’s a generational thing, but it’s the same for Jewish people - they have Israel so many go there to be what they are or come to USA to be free since USA is for all cultures (although many don’t think so but too bad for them). Me as a Hispanic person, and with Spanish ancestry, have been running away from dictatorships in Latin America but if I moved to France, I would not expect France to adopt my Latin culture into theirs. When in France, it’s the French way! If it was the other way around, like Americans in Saudi Arabia, Americans have to wear veils and can’t sleep in the same bed with a man if unmarried. Outsiders respect the culture they have come into and that is to preserve the culture their in.
