    Can somebody explain to an Australian viewer what a "traveller" is? Is it like a gypsy? We don't really have this issue in Australia. Squatters living in abandoned houses might be our equivalent, but they're usually homeless people with no real possessions. I could "google" the answer, but would prefer to hear it how it really is, not some PC/minority friendly official online version.

    • @stephcollins9346
      @stephcollins9346 Před 2 lety +6

      Basically yeah, the traveling community in Britain and Ireland are gypsie/Roma. There are nuances around those terms but in general they are a people who don't live in houses and tend to live in caravans. Because they don't conform to the ideal of owning private property, they face discrimination and are labelled as squatters etc. (In this way of life it is kind of impossible not to be a squatter considering that it is illegal to live on the side of the road and and there is no commonly owned/public property that they would have a right to use..). People's experience of travelers is therefore pretty poor - traveler sights are generally seen to be messy, full of trash and "dumped" items, which has lead conclusions to be drawn that they're just a messy people. But what would you do if your bins weren't collected each week? As they don't have a permanent settled location, they don't have access to the same waste provision services that settled people do. People also experience travelers as hostile/violent which is not surprising considering there is a violet system of oppression in place with regards to their governance.
      Apologies if this seems like it's a pc/minority friendly explanation, I've tried to remain as neutral as possible. If you want to read prejudice there are plenty of other comments saying some pretty nasty things about this people. I hope you have a lovely day in any case.

      @@stephcollins9346 Many thanks for the explanation. Interesting that there is no public property in Britain for them to live. In Australia there are thousands of spots where you can free camp. We don't have "travelers", but a popular pastime or lifestyle here is getting a caravan, motorhome or even convert an old Greyhound coach into an RV and stay somewhere in the bush. Provided you have water tanks and solar power setup, some can camp for months on end. Unlike "travelers" they are often retired or working people helping the economies of struggling small outback towns. What you have there is a British institution you can leave there.

    With the rising cost of living it goes with out saying that many Tenants will be evicted from their homes and face literally living on the streets. The reason for this is due to the new Crime and Policing bill which will make it illegal to live in any vehicle on the side of the road. I'm a Traveller and have lived in a council house for more than two decades and the biggest crooks I know live next door to me. Stealing things off others is not the preserve of the Travelling communities and it is so two faced of people who live in houses to think that they are all squeaky clean. Most of the Travellers that I know work for a living and work bloody hard. It is quite weird that it is not acceptable to be racially prejudice against some one of colour but it's ok to be prejudice against Travellers. Oh and the times I have found someone from a house dumping their rubbish on the side of the road beggars belief it's hypocracsy !
    If you are not keen on Travellers then I feel sorry for you because very soon they could be living next door to you when they are forced to move In to houses.

    • @stephcollins9346
      @stephcollins9346 Před 2 lety +3

      Hey, I appreciate seeing your comment, makes me sick to see how normal prejudice against the traveling community is.. I'm Irish and just a couple years ago we had somebody running for president and on their manifesto was a call for the "final solution" for the traveling community... Not to mention all of the laws in place that enforce the oppression of this people. It's fucked up. Keep well and stay safe!

      @@ballbag I was in a lay by near Worcester yesterday and it was full of rubbish left by drivers along with two lots of paper towels covered in faeces. It's normally a clean layby. Leaving rubbish is not just the preserve if the Travelling communities. I can tell you that I picked it all up because If I use the lay by It I will try to keep it clean. I have witnessed many people from houses fly tipping but I won't take their number plates and report them because it's not worth me taking the risk to my personal safety.
      From my own personal observations there are many people who live in houses that are far more dirty and untidy than travellers!
