I still don’t get why developers keep focusing on RT shadows when the major differences come from GI and Reflections. Yes, shadows make a difference, but as for visuals Global illumination is one of the most significant.

Reflections are way more taxing tho. Imagine the fps loss if next gen consoles had RT Reflections. I had to turn it off on PC (RTX 3070 and Ryzen 5 5600x) with DLSS balanced to get 50-60fps. And this is at 1440p
3 hours later edit: Idk wtf CDPR did but the latest 10GB patch from yesterday (2/19) helped with performance insanely! I can now get 60fps average at 1440p with settings maxed out and RT on medium with ALL RT modes enabled!!! Mind blown!

      What you want is RTGI.
That's the story for this generation, Ray Traced Global Illumination is transformative to the look of videogames (characters and dynamic environments are always correctly lit) and to the speed of videogame production (no need to continually re-bake lighting while editing levels).
Upgraded reflections and shadows are both much less noticeable and provide no benefit to game production, if RTGI is adopted universally it will save people a lot of time and dramatically improve the look of almost every game, the same cannot be said for RT Reflections or RT Shadows.

You can get Ray traced reflections, shadows, lighting, and local shadows on PC, but honestly. Ray traced reflections and lighting absolutely wrecks all but the most powerful PC Graphics cards. You pretty much have to run DLSS or FSR on PC to get it running at decent FPS. My 3070ti can do 60+ at 1440p (most of the time, but not always) with all the ray tracing goodies, but without DLSS it's a slideshow. Even 3080s struggle at times. There's just no way for the consoles to do it while maintaining performance and image quality.

Would love to be behind the scenes to get a sense of the optimization process for console implementations and trade offs of implementing various RT features. For me, the priority number 1 should be RT GI. Metro Exodus managed to do it on console and it is absolutely stunning. Having played through all versions on both consoles, at least for me, the difference is night and day after this patch. There is a lot more going on here it feels like than just a performance and resolution bump. Or maybe it’s just me. But it looks a lot crisper and most notably there is little noticable popin in performance mode which plagued that mode in previous versions for me. Distance detail also seems to hold more than the previous version.
I’m just glad we’re at a place where we’re actually talking about specs and performance rather than what’s wrong with the game. So a total win all around and definitely a step in the right direction. And I agree PS5 definitely gets the lions share of improvements here over what it was previously running. I initially picked it up for PS5 but could not deal with it so played it on Series X in Quality Mode which was probably the best place to play this game on console prior to this. Running a third playthrough on PS5 this time for the haptics and to pop some new trophies and I’m fairly happy with how it turned out. Def a great time to jump in for anyone who has been itching to play this one. There is a great game in here with some truly great moments that will forever be drowned out by it’s release. Concerning ray tracing, I must say that I'm not really surprised PS5 & XB can't really hold up to most peoples "expectations".
Given the fact that even a RTX 3090 combined with an ultra-high-end PC struggle here heavily, at roughly 5 to 10 times the price!
Ray tracing is basically still at the beginning. Until we see really powerful RT hardware, game engines and techniques that make full use of full scene ray tracing,
we will most likely have to wait another one or two decades perhaps even more...
Especially since RT isn't the only hardware hungry feature of the last years. UHD, HDR, High-FPS ect. are all features that put additional enormous pressure
on the Hardware, on top of the contentiously evolving complexity of modern games.
Given the fact that we usually only see an increase of roughly 30% performance increase every GPU generation, it's not really a surprise NVIDIA, AMD & Co. can't keep up...

      @The_ViciousOne Před 2 lety +1

@@verboseEV No doubt. Native platform development and heavy optimizations are oftentimes the key to weather a game is playable in the first place or not.
Unfortunately game development becomes more intense and expensive generation by generation...
AAA-Titles have basically become impossible to develop on a single platform, simply due to the enormous development costs. And should I say "greed" of the bigger companies? This game is a good example to what happens when developers don't get enough time to do their job...
Concerning RT, there is always the question what you expect from ray tracing as it is in the first place. I often hear people complain about the fact, that there seems to be no real difference compared to traditional rendering. But if you are aware, that those traditional rendering techniques have evolved over decades,
while ray tracing is just in the beginning and only selectively used to "enhance" the visual quality, instead of replacing it, you get a pretty good
idea how future fully ray-traced games may look like... It's basically the difference between emulating and simulating reality.

So I put it to you that if there is any distinction in cross platform games, then it likely has more to do with whatever console was given more "love" or dev time to fully optimise the gameplay. I imagine after the shockingly bad release of this game on PlayStation and the subsequent removal from the PlayStation store, it stands to reason that cdpr would spend more time on the ps5 version if they are looking to make money. @@yanceyboyz When you can count the number of games on one hand that that have RT at 60 fps, you know that it's likely not going to become the standard for this console generation. I think we will likely continue to see performance & quality modes for most major games until PS6 / Xbox 5. I can't wait until we get to the point that all games can have native 4K with RT shadows and RT reflections at 60 fps, and a performance mode at 120 fps. That will be next generation, current gen console tech isn't capable.

5-12 fps is not slightly better, when PS5 Has 2 Tflops less than XSX. Yes PS5 doesn't support VRR yet, but to be fair maybe 5% of XSX owners has TV compatible with VRR

@@Radek494 The way I understood Thomas' conclusion was that the difference is minor, simply because these dips where the PS5 has a performance advantage is pretty seldom. And also, the XsX uses it's TF "budget" for higher image fidelity/resolution. The reason I asked was to hear if Thomas has a VRR capable display at all, and if not, maybe that being the reason why he didn't mention it. John Linneman and Richard Ledbetter usually do mention the VRR advantage XsX still has ovver PS5, which completely negates the then performance "win" PS5 enjoys.
As for the percentage of VRR displays among XsX owners. For all I know, it might be _the_ reason people bought an XsX instead of PS5. And so the percentage might be much much higher than what you believe. Not that it really matters, as MOST people don't have neither a PS5 nor an XsX. :P
