Trae Young certainly hasn't; he's a good player but the Hawks completely fucked this and would probably be the first to admit they'd want a do-over if they could lol

Bill i think was one of the few or maybe only really famous sports media guy who said Luka was going to be a generational talent. Props to him on that call . I’m happy to say I did think he’d be an allstar and hall of famer but I did not know he like best guard of his generation level until his rookie year.
i remember SAS saying the suns should pick deandre ayton with the first pick and that he does not care about luka. that was hilarious.

@@joneski49 well he dropped to 3 in the draft and was traded down to 5th so it’s not like he was Wemby, Lebron , Anthony Davis or even Zion level of hype in the states. If I remember correctly most mainstream media doubted him and thought Ayton should go #1.
@jujuthedude agreed he was not as hyped as LeBron/Wemby/Zion but he was at the tier right after them. If you go back and look at draft grades from that night, the majority of outlets were killing the Suns and Hawks for passing in him. If he had been born in America, he would've gone #1 but there was still a slight Euro stigma at the time

For anyone who wasn’t there, Luka was widely considered the best prospect in the draft but then around the draft the whole “European players are gambles in the draft” narrative started and he fell. Even in the moment it was like “Dallas got their centerpiece” lmao
Lol no, that never happened. What actually happened is there were legitimate questions over his athleticism and its still been a talking point with his defense.
How did the team with his national team coach (Suns) and the team with the ex-yu GM Divac (Kings) NOT pick Luka at 1 or 2? It baffles me to this day.
Well, the Suns were dysfunctional under Sarver. As for the Kings and Vlade…If you aren’t aware, the present-day countries that made up Yugoslavia are home to extreme nationalism. The reason Yugoslavia no longer exists is because it was torn apart in a series of brutal civil wars marked by many high-profile war crimes in literally the 1990s.

To be fair, DSJ had a really good rookie year, Barnes was just coming off his GS run, and Jordan was not far removed from all nba selections. It wasn’t that crazy to be bullish on this team if you knew how good Luka was.

It wasn't that impressive. It was just logic.
There are some picks (giannis, jokic, Shai, and more) where hindsight is 20/20 and I don't think any teams that passed on them are to be blamed. Giannis and Jokic were incredibly raw players who didn't become generational talents until a couple years after they were drafted. Shai was a bench player at Kentucky who flashed potential but at the end of the day could have easily peaked as a 2-way bench guard in the league for all we knew. Luka falling to 3rd and getting traded by the team that drafted him is just inexcusable. He wasn't just first pick material, he was one of the best prospects in NBA history. Guys will drop 20 ppg in D1 and go on to be bench players in the Euroleague while Luka was league MVP at the age of 18. And even though the Suns had Booker already there's a reason you go for talent over fit with the first overall pick. Just ask the Blazers how drafting for fit went when they passed on MJ because they already had Clyde Drexler.
It's insane how many Americans said Luka was going to be a bust. This kid was busting everyone's ass for two seasons in the toughest league in the world, at 18. He was the undisputed MVP, champion, best player of Europe at 18. No one does that. That's a sure fire generational talent and these idiot front offices thought Ayton and Bagley (😂😂😂) were better?!?!?!?!

That’s not true at all. I think everybody with even a slight analytics lean thought Luka should have gone number one. Doncic was even number one on the preseason mock draft from DraftExpress.
